Gayll - 3D Universe

sapatsapat Posts: 1,735

I absolutely love her and her hair, but those clothes are awful. Her base looks about 13, but none of her clothes are age appropriate for me. They're bordering on....well, something else. Wish they sold the shoes and jewelry separately. I'd buy those.
Oh well. I have other cute clothes from 3DU that are in line with the age of the character he's promoting.  I can use those for her.  I'll just buy her and the hair and do a hard pass on the clothes. What a shame.

Well she is marketed a a young adult, so 13 is probably a lot younger than intended. I love the clothing, especially the jacket, but agree that for a 13 yr old, it is inappropriate.

did you get the bundle? was curious on the hair. Since it says it is dforce, how does it drape in extreme conditions, say upside down?

With the way the daz site has been working today and the discounts being wacky I have the bundle in my cart but i am waiting to see whats offered or fix tomorrow before i pick it up  I really didn't care about the clothes either. But the hair and character are worth the $19 bucks for the bundle. &  the clothes i can use on other characters,  But like i said I am kind of waiting for daz to get their site straighten out before i buy anything today

Trouble is, "young adult" can mean different things in different contexts.  Many years ago I saw in some article that in the book-marketting world, Young Adult is a description and category-name they use for adventure novels aimed at late pre-teen to early teens, and that often the characters in those adventure novels are also late pre-teen to early teens.... so I saw that description for the character here and went, "Wait.... what....?"

I suppose to avoid potential confusion, they could change Gayll's product description to "youthful adult" or to "young grownup" or something.

Young adult does not mean children.     Young adults used to be late teens to early twenties,  seems to have dropped now to mean mid to late teens for some people,  but not less than 16.

YA literature is things like  Harry Potter and the Dark Materials stuff.

No, I haven't got it yet, it's in my cart. Only getting her and the hair.

This thread made me curious,  so I just had to Google young adult. While there is a bit a variation, I would say that it appears that the most common definition/interpretation seems to be 18 to 20 something (though one or two had it as mid teens to early 20's and a couple even had it extending to early to mid 30's).

If you are going to get 2 of the pieces you can get the 3rd for the same price by getting the bundle.

Had to go look at the Wikipedia article on it, which says things different yet again from what I hazily remembered from that article ages ago.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_adult_fiction

At one point, down near the end, it does list the age range of the characters in YA novals as potentially being 12 to 18, though, (or was it saying the readers would be that age?) but the rest of the article sounds like much of it skews towards the upper part of that range.

Bah, why can't the world be more consistent on things like this.  0o

  • She does read younger teen to me. A missed opportunity to get a VSCO outfit in, although I know some 12 year olds who might where that outfit when they wanted to fancy up.

I'm glad the hair is separate. But the promos do nothing to show how well it can dforce. So if anybody has the hair, I'd like to see some examples of what it can do, if you don't mind.

Out of curiousity, do you get a weaker dForce effect if you set "Start Bones from Memorized Pose" to off?  Also, does seeing a mass of messages go by saying   Because otherwise, I'm not seeing a great dForce effect for this hair.

I tried to do a more reasonable pose with a wind node to see how it looked under normal conditions, but dForce just seemed to break and lock Studio up, so... best I've got up there.

I got a similar vibe between her look and the clothes but I also got a Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana vibe. Like a young girl dressing older because she's a rock star.

    Certainly there's a disconnect though.

...if it weren't for the fact she's G8 and so much har/clothing content for G8 is dForce, she'd be a great basis for my teen characters.

That said the Tamara bundle was a perfect base for the rebuild of my character Leela's best friend Tracey.

Thanks for testing this out, guess it's a pass for me. Pity i liked the look of it. they should change the promo wording to partially dforced hair instead.

I'd be curious to know if this poor dForce simulation is due to issues in this hair, or a problem with dForce hair in general.

A lot of the dForce hair promos I have seen do not show off the dynamics much at all, particularly where the head is upside down, or well bent to the side. I remember when dForce clothing first came out a lot of promos had females in long dresses sitting on the ground, or draped lazily over chairs to really show off the advantages of dForce clothing  (previous to dForce most dress promos had the model standing only). However for hair, the best we see is when the head is slightly bent to the side, or a character is slightly lifting it with their hand.

@Havos like many dForce hairs this is set up with a weight map (see attached picture). This is optimized for draping in an upright and slightly leaning position.  Most of the time this is necessary to make sure

the hair retains some volume rather than looking like a wet cloth after draping. For draping upside down i would edit the weight map or remove it depending on the hair.

Well the Linday older style dforce hairs don't have this issue and the one new style dforce hair i have doesn't either. I do have a few from Lady Littlefox that are just as your image looks and while I understand the reasoning, it means the hair is much less useful to me and probably others. All I am asking is that it is noted whether the hair can be dforced completely or if it is partial like this one to help with an informed purchase decision. I would have returned this if I had bought it based on my needs.

  • felisfelis Posts: 5,751

I agree that it limits the usability of the hair.

And, yes, it would be nice if any dForce hair had at least one promo image showing the hair in a position where it showed off the dForce capabilities to a higher degree.

Age appropriate depends on wearing, or buying for em wearing. Otherwise it's opinion and no more valid than anyone else'a opinion.

    In Daz world, like = buy && not-like = not-buy.

As an older, but by no means old, person, I was annoyed to read someone not here express the opinion that once someone gets over 50 they shouldn't wear jeans - and no I wasn't over 50 when I read it.

    ... HOW DARE THEY!

I would say the same to anyone determining what's appropriate for anyone but themselves and their own "child-age" children.

I hope I've not strayed too far with this post.

I bought the bundle and I haven't had a chance to check her out yet. But looking at the main promo picture, it reminded me of a young lady I saw last Tuesday morning about 6:30am, walking down the street in a snowstorm, in a similar outfit. Ankle boots, bare legs, thin material dress, short jacket, purse overstuffed (rather than the common backpack). The temperature was around the 20's F. Windchill in the teens. Denver had at least 6 inches of snow by then, and more forecasted. Most offices, schools, businesses closed, to keep folks off the streets. I could not think who would be out at that time. Me, I was standing, while my dog sniffed the base of trees, poles, and dug his nose into every drift of snow to roll in it.

I love her look, the outfit has great possibilities, and the hair, well, I have a 'love/hate' relationship with dForce hair, but that is because I haven't taken the time to learn how to use it properly. That is on me. I generally find it works great without dForce. Strand base hair, that, is a steeper curve for me. I love the jacket and the shoes, but haven't used them yet.

I thought Gayll was in high school or older. People do not magically turn into Granny and Jed Clampett on their 18th birthday.

Most of 3D universe figures have a similar look to me.

This one sort of looks like a kids head on an older characters body and she’s somewhat stretched out looking.

I didn't mention it earlier,  but IMHO she could easily be in her early to mid 20's. Determining someone's age based on appearance can be quite subjective. My wife could easily pass for being in her teens when she was in her early thirties.

Hmmm, she looks to be in her late teens to early 20's. But could be younger or older. A wild guess (aided by the topic being discussed) I would say 21-22.

I don't honestly care how old real world people may or may not look.

With 3d figures I do want them to look appropriately within the age range they are marketed as. Otherwise there isn't a point to assigning an age range at all.
