I wish there was an easy way to determine if a product is cloth dForce hair or strand dForce hair.

It can be dforce hair and be neither, which this is.

I love the strand-based hairs, but am not generally keen on the others, purely bacause they use the old system. Strand based hair works beautifully, whereas the mesh method whilst vastly improved with dforce, still looks fake.

... Not the fault of PAs; it is, what it is.

If you look at the spectrum of 3D Universe real-world characters, the younger ones all have faces that seem cartoonish, at least to me. I'm not fond of that look. At least Gayll doesn't look toonish. I think the issue with how old she's supposed to be has to do with the promos. They used some poses and expressions more consistent with their younger characters, IMO. Maybe that's why some think she's too young for their tastes.

A true gentleman never attempts to guess a woman's age. No matter what he says, he's in trouble! wink

I absolutely love her and her hair, but those clothes are awful. Her base looks about 13, but none of her clothes are age appropriate for me. They're bordering on....well, something else. Wish they sold the shoes and jewelry separately. I'd buy those.
Oh well. I have other cute clothes from 3DU that are in line with the age of the character he's promoting.  I can use those for her.  I'll just buy her and the hair and do a hard pass on the clothes. What a shame.

Gayll is definitely not 13. I guess people on this side of the world just look more youthful laugh

I didn't mention it earlier,  but IMHO she could easily be in her early to mid 20's. Determining someone's age based on appearance can be quite subjective. My wife could easily pass for being in her teens when she was in her early thirties.

Can anyone guess how old she is?

Hmmm, she looks to be in her late teens to early 20's. But could be younger or older. A wild guess (aided by the topic being discussed) I would say 21-22.

She's 23 - but could easily be taken for being 14-15.

I don't honestly care how old real world people may or may not look.

With 3d figures I do want them to look appropriately within the age range they are marketed as. Otherwise there isn't a point to assigning an age range at all.

Well what's appropriate is always subjective as well as contextual.

This debate always comes up when characters which are marketed as a certain age, don't look that age to certain viewers. It is what it is. I am not arguing that older looking teens don't exist or younger looking adults don't exist or that it is or is not subject to taste.... That is sort of obvious and doesn't need to be stated.

I am saying what I am looking for. Feel free to want what you want.

I say she looks much younger than her marketing age. Just my opinion. Give her a sweater and Jeans and she'll look okay.

Actually, real world or DAZ world since it's largely based on real world experiences, official IDs are created and issued to us for a reason, that being that we can't reliable estimate others' age from our own personal experience. It's why they created laws to enforce checking of IDs buying cigarettes, alcohol, and what not, no matter what the cashier or bartender or whoever thinks is the purchaser's age.

Now some people might find that annoying but plenty of parents and horse jockeys are quite pleased that those decisions are now based on the fact of what the official ID states instead of someone's personal opinion. laugh

  • I'd say some of her apparent age is due to the proportions of her facial features and the size of her head. A little dialing could easily give a more mature look.

I agree.  The large cheekbones and small nose are really what's jumping out at me.  Another solution besides dialing might be to change out the Normal Map, as well as picking different sets of clothes.

Of course, if she's not your thing, she's not your thing, but I can definitely see a use for her beyond "indeterminately young person".

Gayll to me looks a bit like the actress (not in the face, but the 'type') who plays the dead woman in American Gods - adult, but a very 'teenish' look.

  • When my wife and I got married we were both 20, I was in the Navy and everybody I worked with/friends with thought she was 14 when they met her. Even today she looks at least 10 years younger than all the women her age. So it is possible to have people precieve the same here, but her dad has verified her age, so...

Aye.  I always remember, back in the day when I was still married to my first hubby and pregnant with my eldest son, I went shopping with my sister-in-law (age 13) she got the tickets and automatiaclly asked for 2 half fares (ie child fares) on the bus and wasn't queried.

Out of curiousity, do you get a weaker dForce effect if you set "Start Bones from Memorized Pose" to off?  Also, does seeing a mass of messages go by saying   Because otherwise, I'm not seeing a great dForce effect for this hair.

I tried to do a more reasonable pose with a wind node to see how it looked under normal conditions, but dForce just seemed to break and lock Studio up, so... best I've got up there.

thanks for that hair demo I am glad I waited on buying the bundle now. .I do like the characters she loks around 16 to 17 to me  so I picked her up this morning.  I passed on everything else. I would not have been happy with that hair after all. The hair in the 3du dayton bundle would deforce upside down pretty good like in your test. . but in animation it would look like its falling out on the ground. but deforce hair is hard to work with in animation anyway it uses alot of resources

this animation has the dayton hair in the first few scenes

The clothes were basically free if you got the bundle if you were planning on getting the hair and character anyway.  I thought the character looked about 14, reminded me of a young Jodie Foster, and to me, the clothes don't go with the character, but of course, the clothes can be put on any character, so I'm not sure what the fuss is...

Re: carding for alcohol-- here in California, they still card people who are obviously in their 80's and up! It's crazy!

I finally got to render Gayll. I found she is 4 ft 9 in or 149cm in Measure Metrics. After looking at her, and working with her, I might suggest folks could look at her as a petit woman, who is slender and delicate. I used the outfit, except for the dress, adding in the Honeydew earrings, jeans, and top, with the jacket and boots. I think they worked together pretty well. I didn't try to stress the dForce hair too much, I really have bad luck when I do. So I kept the pose simple. Everyone has to make up their own minds, but, she does fill a niche that has been missed, of the smaller height/size adult woman.
