I always keep headlamp to never and no issues here

  • SimonJMSimonJM Posts: 6,067

Ok, I think I figured it out.... Whenever I deleted the DAZ folder in the registry (Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DAZ\Studio4) it would work until I changed the render settings to the ones I use normally. After some tries it seems to be, whenever I start up DAZ with the Auto Headlight option set to "When no scene lights" my GPU works fine, even after I change it to "Never". But for the very next DAZ startup the GPU fails unless I set that option back to "When no scene lights". No idea what would cause this, like I said, I used DAZ for months and 4.12 for a few days without issues and that setting is one of the first I always set to "Never". Well atleast I can work now, would still be cool if someone had any idea what could be the issue here.

Repeatable problems are a dream for a programmer - you should send in a support ticket detailing these steps.

I also always have headlamp set to Never with no issues. However I don't have an RTX card, and according to Padone's forum sig, neither does he. Maybe there is some issue with RTX.

  • Does Iray still use the Architectural Render option.??., I thought I read a while ago that it had become deprecated in the last few releases of Studio.

The reason I ask, is that I have just started experimenting with it, and I'm seeing much faster and better renders with this option enabled.

By faster I mean, less iterations for a better result.

    S.K.

Thanks for the reminder, I just updated my support ticket with that information.

Does Iray still use the Architectural Render option.??., I thought I read a while ago that it had become deprecated in the last few releases of Studio.

It was deprecated (deemed unnecessary to have around any more as a separate feature due to advancements in Iray's default rendering algorithms) during the beta development stage of Daz Studio 4.11. Currently even the latest Beta of 4.12 still has a control for it despite the fact that it serves no purpose other than to cause a non-critical error in your log file:

2019-10-29 21:44:17.806 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(304): Iray [ERROR] - IRAY:RENDER ::   1.0   IRAY   rend error: Architectural sampler has been removed and is no longer supported.

The reason I ask, is that I have just started experimenting with it, and I'm seeing much faster and better renders with this option enabled.

By faster I mean, less iterations for a better result.

    S.K.

If you render the same scene in both 4.10 (architectural sampler: off) and 4.11 (architectural sampler: removed) to the same approximate level of convergence and then check the log files, you will see that 4.11 does it in sometimes significantly fewer iterations (though not necessarily over less time.) This is in part because rendering in 4.11 is essentially like rendering in 4.10 with the architectural sampler enabled all of the time.

I'd add that it would be nice to have the checkboxes for deprecated or non-functional features to be removed in the interface. So users don't waste their time wondering what they are for. For example I remember having a noise degrain filter around forever and doing absolutely nothing before 4.11.

To the Daz team may you clean up please.

Given how monor an issue it is they may simply hold off, or set it to a low priority, since there's always the risk of breaking something. As I recall the beta has (or will) remove the OptiX Plus check box, so I imagine the Architectural Sampler will follow (if it hasn't).

  • Yes, Sir! The OptiX Plus check box has been removed from DS 4.12 BETA. And this check box is returned in 4.12 PRO. But I didn’t see the difference in rendering speed between the first and second.  Perhaps the developers simply doubted the appropriateness of its cancellation. Confirmation of the correctness of this solution requires additional experiments by both developers and users.

  • Thanks All for the confirmation on the Architectual Sampler.

Now to my next issue.., why is Studio using 2.6GB of Vram JUST to render a simple cube primative with no textures applied to its surface.

Vram usage with the Cube in the scene 358MB, Vram usage at render 2.6GB.., WTF.???, what is going on.??

Please please please Daz address this Vram issue the latest Versions of Studio has.

    S.K.

In a good card it's about 2gb for the working buffers alone, that's almost independent from the scene. Plus the frame buffer that grows with the render resolution. Plus geometry and textures that in this case are minimal. So yes, this is normal.

It has to be said though that the working buffers size also depends on the card, so in a card with less vram iray will try to allocate smaller buffers. This also depends on the driver and the iray version. In any case afaik daz studio has nothing to do with it, that's entirely iray side.

DAZ's removal of the (deprecated) OptiX Prime acceleration checkbox came about as a direct result of a bug report I submitted about it around 1.5 months ago (got official confirmation of it being resolved and everything.) For whatever reason(s), DAZ tends not to prune non-critical deperecated features of Iray from its user interface unless users specifically bug report them.

So I'd suggest doing that (just put "N/A" in the order number box) if you don't want your fellow users to continue being misled.

I wouldn't assume it wa because of the report - we don't know how the decision was made, or if it was Rob tweaking a minor issue in his own time and of course we don't know how many other people may have made a report.

Was there a fix found for this? I can render 2-3 scenes and then I am back to having my CPU rendering and not the GPU. (2070 video card)

Based on the timing of the issue first appearing, the timing of my bug report, the timing of DAZ's response saying that it was resolved, the timing of the feature change actually taking effect, the specific wording of my bug report submission and the specific wording of the change log wherein the feature change is noted, I can say with about 99.8% certainty that the change happened as a direct result of my bug report.

That's right. When the DS.4.12 was released, I had 398.11-desktop driver from Nvidia installed. And render monstrously slowed down. But installing a new (440.97-desktop-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql) driver increased rendering speed radically. (And now NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Drivers 441.08 WHQL is available for download). It is very important to install the latest driver for both RTX and non-RTX graphics cards.

I just installed 4.12 and I'm getting a LOT of crashes. Random crashes here and there, and notably when I load gen3 stuff to my gen8 figure and I'm prompted to specify "from gen3", "whole body", enter = crash every time. I have to load the item into the scene without autofitting, and then fit it the figure, which takes longer, so not that bad but still annoying. Also I got a preview bug on some models, Iray not showing or showing intermittently. Other than that I haven't found any difference from 4.11, which was better for me.

What's the easiest way to go back to 4.11 once 4.12 is installed ? Will the files I worked on using 4.12 still work with 4.11 ?

    Thanx

Did you make a back up of the DS 4.11.x.x and plug-in installers? If not I'm afraid you can't roll back.

    Thanx for your answer.

So I have to uninstall 4.12 and reinstall 4.11 ? I can't seem to find 4.11 for download on the daz3d site. Is there a link to older versions ?

Will I be able to open in the 4.11 version the work I saved using the 4.12 version ?

No, it isn't available for download - that's why I asked if you'd made a back up. You can open a Support ticket, but they may want to try to troubleshoot your issues first (and if you are having crashes with AutoFit - epsecially if you can trigger them on dmeand with certain items - that would definitely be worth reporting)

Nvidia just came up with a new driver. Everything works great now. Better even than the previous version.

    Back to work ! :)

I'm using DS 4.12.0.86 that I installed less than a couple weeks ago.  All of a sudden last night, I can't render anything.  I have nothing but a blank checkered viewport after rendering. Haven't made any changes. Just stopped working.  Any ideas what would make that happen?

Also if you had multiple crashes before then windows may have stopped daz studio from using the driver, in this case you need to reinstall.

Also you may try setting cpu only in the iray panel and render something, then setting back gpu rendering. This is known to flush the vram and may be can reset the driver too.

Try to render something, and copy/paste the last few lines or so of the log. That usually contain any render errors, etc.

That might indicate that at soem tiem DS was run with adminsitrator privileges (not the same as just running from an administrator account) and now DS can't do stuff with the temp folder - that would certainly be an issue. Can you create a folder (of any kind) in the temp folder without getting a UAC prompt (assuming UAC is on and set to prompt)?

I doubt it would cause render issues, but it might lead to bad files that will store things from the content folder with a relative path that goes (for example) /content/runtime/textures/productname/texture.jpg, instead of the proper /runtime/textures/productname/texture.jpg

If you had harware that supported it (you don't) and weren't using the card for the display (I assuem you are, since it's your only card) you could switch to another mode of operation that would make more of the memory available. It's information rather than an error report, and not relevant to your situation.

**So does that mean my CUDA is now 10.1 since I upgraded my driver?  The other day it said CUDA was  9.1.

Yes, it's saying you now have a new enough driver

I can render again, but I still can't render dforce cat hair or human hair.

Forgot to add my screenshot. Is the OpenGL 4.6 a current version?

    I spoke too soon...

I'm still getting crashes from fitting gen3 clothes on a gen8 figure. I used to be able to load the item and then fit it to the figure. Now that also crashes.

Now I can't use the gen3 clothes at all.

Anyone else getting this issue ?

Thanks guys for all the suggestions about the issues I'm having. I've had power outages here due to high winds and storms, haven't been able to be online. Will get at it now.

    Hi!

i have an issue with Daz Studio 4.12

some items that previously worked in older versions ,now made the program to crash.

right now i have installed DS 64 bits and the DS 4.12 beta 32 bits to be able to use these items.

when i save them as scene or scene subset items with the beta version...i can use them in the final version without crash...for the moment is a fix for me...

but i would like to have this better fixed.

The other day i bought this  ( https://www.daz3d.com/vintage-looks-for-star ) and it made the program crash

but works perfect in the beta version...same with a freebie that i have used previously without any problem.

hope you can fix it ....thanks in advance!
