Good job! Excellent use of scale to sell the cityscape.

I think it's interesting to see your progression as an artist from the first episode (I think done in D/S?) to this latest episode. I like the story so far, but to be honest, when I watched the first episode some months ago, I almost didn't watch the rest, due to the lighting. I'm glad I did take the time, because as I said above, you could see the progression of your skill set.

    Thanks evilproducer,

Yes you are so right. That pilot episode and indeed at least the first 2 need to be re-done. The pilot especially is a terrible advert for the rest of the series. The only thing that is good about it is that it's my first ever animation, so not bad for a first try. However that doesn't cut it in the real world - no one cares about that - just how it looks.

I've already outlined a complete overhaul of the pilot, which is going to be visually much more pleasing and dramatic. I'd go as far as to say it will be another epic.

    :-)

It's true for everybody. I go back through some of my early stuff on youtube and I cringe. I leave it up to remind me where I started and where I'm headed.

Thanks PhilW - you got that right - I won't add up the hours I spent on this lest I get a heart attack!

I've now added all the tutorials I've made which relate to episode 8 to the initial post, more to be added over the next few weeks.

Watched the series in order last night and I'm impressed with the amount of detail that you've been able to achieve.

Nice one. I love it when someone watches from the beginning. Thanks for letting me know. Episode 9 production started a while back, and I'm back on it now.

I agree, and I have for a while now. I'm glad that I've finally seen this, new one. Very cool. Great job, Steve. I really like the 'look' you've made for yourself. An important thing to have for an on going series of episodes, and you do that very well.

Thanks Dartan. Yes the look (well the whole living the future thing) I find exciting. Unless finances collapse, 2014 should be a much more prolific year. I have a crazy hope to get 3 episodes out by Mid-May 2014, but we'll see.

That's very cool, because I'm always hungry for more. It'll be interesting to find out what ends up happening to this dude - and what his actions unleash on the rest of the world. Eager with anticipation = me! :ahhh:

I'll let slip that there are certain major milestones in the series. ep 8 was one of them (i.e. could I even make a scene of that size happen?), 9 and 10 are building blocks and then 11 (hopefully) will be quite spectacular in it's own way.

...and while some might be much more of a milestone for you, they are all special, interesting and pleasing to me, plus they all keep me wanting to watch the next. Really fun series you have here.

I just watched from the start - very impressive that you are still doing it after years of work! You can really see the development in your techniques, I'm now keen to see what happens and where you take it.

Thanks Phil - yes I keep pushing boundaries. Thanks for watching the early ones, they are slow, and I didn't know much then.

You'll be glad to know the plot expands soon. I picked up episode 9 again tonight.

Many thanks. I think the future is bright for both of us via Octane. Episode 9 is already part-rendered so I'm continuing with Carrara for that one, but episode 10 - I'm dreaming of Octane for that. Episode 11 would look spectacular if it could be rendered unbiased.

    More to come!

I like the series and wish the episodes were longer. I also agree with the positive comments regarding the progression of the look and feel with each episode. This one is definitely eye candy. :-)

Did you do any color grading in post or is this straight out of Carrara (I apologize if you already answered this; I may have overlooked a similar question/answer)?

Thanks Cyborgty - I also wish the episodes were longer! The reason for the small episodes is I've got further and further behind schedule, so have had to split the episodes up to achieve any kind of continuity. Originally 5-8 was all in 5, but it was too big a project all together.

The good news is today I put an outline together for Episode 9 and it comes in just over 4 minutes which is a bit better than I've managed for a while now.

re: Colour grading in post. I did a little, I'm not that experienced in such matters. Instead I only use colour correction to fix any issues after rendering (always in Carrara atm - but Octane is coming) if time is running short. I do this in Sony Vegas (the compositing software I use),

Great work, Steve! An endeavor of this magnitude takes a lot of discipline.

Something that struck me watching this cinematic episode was the number of camera angles/shots and the duration of each shot. You have quite a few that are 1-3 seconds in length, yet it is clear you put a lot of work into the set-up.

I, for one, would be interested in learning about your thought processes leading to decisions about this. (If you've done a tutorial on this already, sorry I missed it!) I'm still thinking this would make for an excellent thread, maybe at the cafe over some hot java. :)

    Keep up the great work!

    Many thanks Fractal.

I haven't made a video about camera shot length. I feel I'm still learning about this, but I have learned a lot from others in the last few years. I will do a tutorial on this combined with Camera angles. More of a discussion piece. Then perhaps in a few years do another one and we can compare notes!

    Cheers.
