...from what I understand Fermi architecture is no longer supported by Iray. The 750Ti and Titan-X have are Maxwell so that should be OK for a while.

Are those specs any good?
Fermi is still supported. Kepler is the one that was removed with this release. Titan X is from the 900 series era not the 700, titans from then are the Titan, Titan Black and Titan Z.
Those specs are ok, not good but for your budget good. It will be supported likely as long as the card lasts and you will be able to render some scenes particularly if you use scene optimizer.
That's okay, when I got my new computer with an Nvidia card I was wondering why my Iray renders weren't that much faster than my old computer without an Nvidia card. Then a couple of months later I realized I had to tell Studio to use the Nvidia cart for rendering. Wooops!

I've read somewhere that a 6G card is a good compromise, any thoughts on the EVGA 1060 6gb SuperClocked card?
It's usually cheaper to render on a card that isn't overclocked. But other than that a 6Gb 1060 just be ok.
Hopefully I win the auction...knock on wood! Oh yeah I found an interim solution, turns out I had an actual Nvidia 2Gb card in my parts box (it wasn't compatible with my prior PC build, thus the Radeon card I'd been using) that I'd completely forgotten about. Installed it a few days ago, while it's not an earth shattering improvement, renders that took 6 to 8 hours now take about 3; so until I get a more powerful card it's slightly better than what I previously had! :)
I still don't understand the fansination with Iray instead of an open platform.
It's built into DS, its free, it's fairly easy to get good results (contrary to 3DL), that's probably why.

Ebay is probably your best bet. I would get a 1070 or 1080 with the 8gb and just be patient and get a good deal. Just get fresh thermal pads vram and thermal grease on gpu and download MSI afterburner so you can turn up the fan to 100% so your card does not die an early death due to overheating. All video cards made for gaming are setup for lower temp fan setting, Iray really cooks video cards. Consequently, you need to turn on the fan to 100% and make sure you have good airflow in your system otherwise take off the side panel when working with Iray. I know some people do scam on ebay but as long as you can return it within 30 days you are safe. Ebay will refund your money.
Newer MSI (and possibly other) cards have dynamic fans that adjust their speed automatically to the temperature. The ones on my GTX1070 rarely exceeds 70% speed, keeping temperature when rendering below 65 C. When I don't render they don't run at all (they first start running at around 55-60 C). Wonder why the not all cards have that feature.
And yes, good air flow through the case is one of the most important things, if the air inside the case is too hot even the best and fastest fans don't help much.
Not sure if any of the companies that sell cards in the US don't have dynamic fan curves. I've got an EVGA 1080ti and a Zotac 2070 and both have dynamic fan curves.

But the hardware is not exactly free, is it. But yes, it's easy to get good results as long as there are one click solutions/presets in the store. Leave them out and it would be a whole new ball game

I take it you mean Blender? Just as a matter of interest, if it is Blender, what do you use to get your scenes over to Blender and do you set up all your materials in Blender using the node system? I think I've just mentioned a couple of reasons why people don't follow you to Blender but, having said that, I am seriously considering doing so. I have to admit that the node system is a scary prospect for me though.
Well you don't really need to buy any extra hardware if you can live with the long render times when doing CPU only renders (I did the first year or so). NVidia cards are expensive but save you a lot of time, and which CPU you have doesn't matter so much (my Core2 Quad is over 12 years old I think but works fine with my GTX1070). Renderers which rely on the CPU require a heavy and expensive CPU instead if you want similar render times. There's no free lunch as they say.
As for presets I often just use the default DS lights, even with these you can get good results IMO.
I never use preset cameras or lighting. It's still faster and easier than 3DL. I do not want to, nor can I for my VN renders, spend hours and hours fiddling with each and every scene. I need to load assets, set textures and poses, adjust positions, get my camera placement right, get the lighting right and render. I tried 3DL and it took roughly twice as long per render and far too many assets do not include 3DL textures at all and many of the others have pretty terrible textures.

I see that you may not understand the concept of Physically Based Rendering. Iray light bounces, creates shadows (whether you want them or not, creates reflections (again whether you want them or not).
Look at the Iray documentation for Nvidia. You don't have to like Iray, but don't give me any BS about "preconceptions" concerning a factual statement.

I think there is some confusion about Renderman. Renderman is two, at least. seperate things.
There's Renderman Interface Spec (RISpec) which is an interface that should allow any 3D graphics program to output a scene that could be ingested by any render engine (as long as both implemented RISpec). This is hardware agnostic. It could be GPU accelerated or it could be entirely CPU it all depends on the render engine.
There's also Renderman the render engine. which no longer is RISpec compliant.
I'm pretty sure any time Renderman gets a credit it means the render engine not RISpec.
As my reply was removed for some reason, I'll have a new go at it.
i don't dislike IRay, I just prefer to do PBR rendering in 3DL, as it renders on CPU, and (among other reasons) it's biased, which opens up a load of possibilities that IRay doesn't have. (Turning off shadows, reflections as needed, using motion blur to name a few)
3DL has a pathtracer, had it long before IRay was introduced. You can tap into this pathtracer with scripting. With the proper shaders and pathtraced lights you have pretty much the same options as in IRay. Rendertimes are generally more than 4 times faster than IRay on CPU. So, as you see, your "factual" statement is questionable.
Have instructions for this? I would not be at all against swtiching over if it can get better and easier to understand results.
They are both unusable on my new PC at the moment
if DAZ decides to continue with the fix instigated in 4.12 I will in fact be better off using my old PC with the much better CPU for both.
