Need to know how to begin with Genesis....

Hi folks,
I guess hell has frozen over. I'm considering working with Genesis now. Can you either explain what I will need (base wise for figures) what I need to get started with it? Or point me to an existing forum topic which will explain what I will need to get started with Genesis?

It can seem pretty overwhelming to start with, but really the base figure is all you need to get started creating your own masterful characters. For that, you simply need to download the Genesis Starter Essentials which includes everything you need, including the figure itself.
Once you have your metaphorical foot in the door you might want to expand by picking up some of the figure packs, as many of them provide UV sets which are useful, if not essential, for various texture packs. By default Genesis supports all Gen4 textures including K4, M4 and V4, so even at it's most basic you can use a lot of older content. It also comes with autofit clones so that you can easily use your older Gen4 outfits.
Of course, my personal favourite part is the child morph, and not simply because it allows you to create toddlers. Adding it in smaller amounts can give softer features, varying heights and, of course, everything from tots to younger adults. I won't leave you with a laundry list of things you should buy, but play around with it for a few days and you'll soon learn where you feel most restricted and where you might want to expand upon.
There really is a huge wealth of content available for Genesis now, and with the Genesis 2 clone, it can now use many of the newer outfits designed for the latest figure. Play around and see what works best for yourself, and if you need guidance then there's bound to be someone on the forums who can point you in the right direction.
To be perfectly honest, I only want Genesis for his clothes. But of course, you can't have a blank in the clothes since there will be a wide variety of the clothing. So I'd probably get the Genesis Gen 4 morphs so that I could hopefully use my Gen 4 morphs and maps with it and go from there.
Once you start with genesis...it becomes easy to ween away from gen4 stuff.
It really is so much easier to use.
Good luck and have fun. I just started learning to use Daz Studio earlier this year. I agree with RawArt. A lot of gen 4 clothes fit Genesis via Autofit. You may find you don't need the old stuff after a while. Either way, Enjoy.

If you have a lot of M4 and V4 skins & clothes you like to use, I highly suggest getting the M4 and V4 shapes.
Yeah.... I really like the Gen 4 folks. Well, actually I have the Gen 3's and 4's. It just seems a waste to kind of start over, having to buy all new stuff for a character and then rely on him to take everyone's place. But if I can transfer the stuff from my Gen 3's and 4's to the new character, then that's a huge plus. I just really hate the idea of abandoning my Gen 4's. lol. They are my favorites.
Actually Genesis can use Gen4 skins and clothing (via AutoFit) out of the box. Whether it works better if you have the V4 and M4 Shapes for Genesis, I've never been quite sure of...
But yes, it's a good idea to get the shapes anyway, especially if you have some of those characters "for V4 and Genesis" or "for M4 and Genesis." Or if you want to transfer V4 and M4 morphs using Genesis Generation X (GenX).
If you just want to play around with Genesis without spending much (or any) money, I'd recommend getting this freebie morph set: DieTrying's 182 V4 Morphs for Genesis and taking a look at this tutorial: Fun With Genesis Base.
When you're ready to buy, I concur with Patience55 that the Genesis Starter Bundle (or one of the larger bundles that include it) should be among your first Genesis purchases.
