Skin Builder 8 - Couple of quick questions

ElgyfuElgyfu Posts: 279

Sorry to be a pest.  Skin Builder 8 is in the grab-bag sale, and I am dithering whether to buy it.

Could someone who has this product please answer a couple of quick questions for me?

1 - Am I right in thinking that it comes with 4 default skins, which you can then add details and adjust to make various skins?

2 - It can also add details and adjustments to the G8F skins I have already, and save them in an easy to use format?

3 - Can I create additional resources for it, for example new freckle maps, eye maps, skin blemishes and so on? I used to create Poser skins and have masses of resources which would be great to include in skins for G8F.

4 - Can you save a skin to work on more at a later point?

I know a lot of people refer to this product as really useful and even as a must-have. I would like to be able to make custom skins for my girlies, but not just four basic ones with freckles etc or not - I would want to make multiple, significantly different, skins.  I am pretty sure that Skin Builder 8 does do that, but would just like confirmation.  Sorry to be a pest.

1- Yes, and they're then a merchant resource.

2 - Yes, you can absolutely modify existing skins, and then save those as presets.

3 - My inclination is to say "no". The interface probably won't recognise and display new options without adjusting the script code. That said, it's entirely possible to create L.I.E. presets out of those resources instead.
EDIT: Apparently, I'm wrong - it is possible.

4 - I'm not entirely sure what you mean here (or at least I'm not sure why it's a different question to the second part of Question 2). It creates new textures, which you can then modify again, but there's not some kind of "Skin Builder" file format that saves a working copy.

EDIT: I'll definitely recommend it as a product though, as particularly with things like the various "blemishes", it's a good way to make characters with overly airbrushed skins feel much more realistic. Also, I like freckles.

Yes, what I was thinking of was a "working copy" I suppose.  So. presumably, if I made a nice skin, with freckles, I can't then reopen it and remove the freckles.  But that makes sense, really, I was just being hopeful, hehe

Thanks for your reply, Matt :-)

I have quite a few character skins, but the ability to mash them up and make some more unique ones would be great.

Yeah, as helpful as it would be to say "Actually, I think I set the freckle strength too high, I'll dial that back", what you have to do at that point is start over, because it's just stored in image map format. Of course, one option if you're working on a skin is to keep notes on your specific recipe in order to make it easier to replicate/tweak the formula.

  • For 3, I don't know if you mean for yourself or to sell (don't know about the latter), but you absolutely can make your own masks and have those integrated into Skin Builder. The pdf tutorial goes into how to do that, and I've personally done so.

I have bought it and will have a play later. I doubt I will make anything to sell, I now just create for my own fun :). But always nice to have options of course.
  • I have Skin Builder 8 and find it quite useful for makeup combinations and eyebrows. Every now and then I find a G8 character that has messed up eyebrows or limiting makeup options, so I just use Skin Builder. When it comes to the makeup, particularly the lips, when you're trying to go for a specific color, you might have to use "Normal Blend" instead of "Multiplicative Blend".

:( I feel so stupid but I don't know how on earth to work this.

    Where are the instructions?

The Documention Centre page says - "Please read the User Guide and Merchant Resource Agreement to get an easier understanding on tips and workflow regarding how this product can be used. "

What User Guide?  Where is it?  I have looked through the folders, I can't see it.  All I see is lots of "Do not click" icons.  Not helpful :(

Erm, that would only be useful if I knew how to get up that screen thing in the picture :(

Without the instructions I didn't know how to get it started at all.

I have finally found the manual, by searching my whole computer for it.  Going to read it now, and then have a good play :-)

I have seen this claimed many times in relation to this product, but I have yet to find any description of how to do it. Not on the screen itself, not in the manual, not anywhere that Google seems to be able to find. Can anyone help?

I think I did it once by accident in the G3F version of this product...basically, you load whatever base skin you're trying to modify, skip the initial skin building step and go straight to freckles/veins/makeup, make the changes you want, and then save it out the same way you would a normal skinbuilder project.

You're totally right. Just tried that and it worked like a charm. It makes total sense once you say it, but the way the script window is laid out makes it seem like you have to start with that Skin tab.
