...that's pretty much what I did with G3. The two temptations with G8 for myself are the two "senior" characters as there has been nothing like them for any of the earlier generations. Floyd would work so well as a base for several of my characters, particularly head Butler Giles, and Pilot/Chauffer Salvador of the Grande estate, Lord Marchemont.the Lord Protector of England, and one of Lady Grande's associates, Uncle Chen.
...yes I have and it is a little more work but it can still look very good. There are tricks to doing so. Going from G2 to G3 like I do is a bit trickier as there was a change in the weight mapping system between the two generations. With G8 the changes were primarily to facial morphing and expressions.
I got sucked into G8 because of the promise of better expressions. But I have found that I have to custom-dial expressions for my main characters in order to make them look appropriate.
I also liked the look of Victoria 8's skin, and I presumed that would be the standard for all Core characters; (why didn't I learn from G3?). It's pretty much hit and miss for superlative skins, except whoever has been doing the G8M Core skins: Each one of those is consistently brilliant; which was not true of G3M.
The amount of morph packs I have for G8 make it frustrating when I'm dialing a G3 character because I can't make the changes I've become accustomed to making. So, that's a big plus.
When G9 comes, there will be some alleged advances that make it better. But it will probably take awhile before we discover the real advances or until some vendors make products allowing us to access those advances.
Bingo.
As someone who has done multiple conversions, I can tell you first hand what falls thru the cracks. Extra joints in a clothing item (such as posable skirts for example) high heeled shoes (since they have to be rigged a certain way) parented props like weapons (especially going from T pose to A pose) and poses (this is not an exhaustive list, either) Even the stuff that does autofit well, is passable (in that, it gets you by but its not as good as made for is) because as someone else suggested, most of the time it needs wm adjustments, new jcms and so forth (not to mention figure morph corrections) Occasionally, Ive even had to make geometry adjustments to the new figure.
Is it to make more money? Of course it is... everything on this site's purpose, is to make money. Is it a necessity? It really depends on the item in question, and how bad someone wants to use it on another figure. Using myself as the target, I do them on the things I mentioned above, that simply will not autofit properly (and only on sets that were popular enuff to be worth the trouble) Can you do them on your own? Well, you're certainly welcome to try (and fail miserably in my case, as I have tricky items... for more standard stuffs, ymmv) But that act thereof, would prolly lend itself to a greater understanding of why its done in the first place. Though it might seem a simple, effortless and unecessary cash grab, I can assure you, conversions are not easy at all. Rogue Element's took me a month to do.... and that was with everything already being modelled, and tex/mtls already done.
...for new clothing these days, I'm pretty much down to Wilmap's site and Rendo as all new clothing sold here is for G8 (a good portion of which is dFroce, which is hard on my old system).
Footwear between generations has always been an issue.
Hair I can manually fit and parent quite easily (thus preserving all morphs).
Poses are a pain unless you have a pose converter (though they only convert the previous to the newest Genesis generation, not the other way).
Even with just a few tools, you can give your older figures new life and they can definitely hold their own against the new figures too. Here's David 5. I just love his sculpt...it's so well done. Of all the FBMs I have his is the only one that I don't have to change the size of the eyes or irises, the size of the head or anything else like I do the newer DOs. If he had newer rigging, textures and morphs he'd be just about perfect. When I don't feel particularly inspired to do an image, I spend my time in DS doing things I'll need later, mostly taking older things and converting the shaders to Iray. I spent the evening converting David to iray, moving image maps to new slots and removing them from where they don't belong (his skin is Edward 8's shaders with a few tweaks and his eyes are Chevybabe's eye shaders with a few tweaks. He's otherwise using his own texture maps). While there are a few things that bother me a little - I might have to remove those wrinkles on his forhead from the maps - he looks alright really. I have a G3M clone for Genesis, so he can wear G3M hair and clothing and here he's wearing Redz Super Natural Brows for G3M. Because he can wear G3M cloth and hair, it's just a small thing to convert G8M clothing and hair too and have that whole wardrobe. One doesn't HAVE to move to the latest and greatest if they really like the older stuff and still be able to get new stuff ;).

I don't "invest" in 3D content any more. I buy VERY VERY selectively. Which means i buy MUCH MUCH less. There's no point in "investing" in a specific character or generation of figures when you know it's going to be quickly abandoned for something new and likely incompatable in some way.
I still love working with Genesis, G2 and G3 there is no reason why you should not enjoy working with them.
Just because a new and shiny model comes out, does not mean you have to have it.
If you are happy with the Characters you have now, that is all that matters.

Keping Up With The Joneses (or the newest releases) is financial suicide and incredibly egotistical. Granted these two personality flaws pretty much define the word "Artist".
Still, just because there's a New Thang doesn't mean you have to abandon what works. I used Aiko 3 from her inception until 2014 when I built my current PC. She worked for what I was doing. She'd still work for what I'm doing if I could find 2K textures to my liking, and she was a bit smoother around the edges (which are very noticable alongside Aiko 6).
