Just so NO ONE is surprised next time - let's Get This Straight here and now. The release dates for the last few new figures have been Two Years apart over the past few years. And almost always in June exactly. So you can expect Genesis9/Victoria 9 (or at least a new line of figures - whatever they want to call it) in June of 2019.

There have been threads on this. I've made quite a few posts on this subject myself to try and "prepare" people.

If they keep on the same schedule as the past few figure releases, they will continue to put out new figure lines every two years. You have to decide for yourself if you want to pursue the new line every two years or not.

I started using Daz/buying content early this year and have quite a lot of G3 content now.  I went ahead and got V8 because it seemed like a good deal with V5 and V6 thrown in (I had V7) and because she can apparently wear the older clothing - which means I can use her immediately.  I may not purchase a lot of V8 clothing if it is not compatible with G3/V7 because I only recently purchased quite a few characters and clothing etc which I would like to use/try first.  I do hope we see G8M soon.  Choices are good, and as some have pointed out, perhaps the G3 items will now go on deeper discounts.

Don't be sad. You have not lost your work. You can continue with what you have. I just got decent teeth for Genesis 3 this month (so I could open her mouth without her looking like a horse or a goon), and now here comes Victoria 8 smiling like she knows a secret on lots of promos! Well, I've already cast my blockbuster with Genesis 3, and I've started production. I will just use Gen8 where I can, and if the expressions are really that much better, then I'll have to make some changes. But the show must go on. Take a break. Have some ice cream. And start playing again. You don't have to be state-of-the-art to be avant garde.

I would sure love to know how you are doing with your blockbuster

Well, I ended up trying to get morphs for genesis, genesis 2, and by the time it was G3 it for G3F only.  Skin Builder for G3F just came out and I really waited on that and wanted it so bad.  I have lots of things I want to do with the library I have now.  I feel exactly like the original poster only I was kinda mad.  I have been begging for some updates to autofit and if I just throw hundreds of dollars at getting G8 I won't have to manually fit long dresses.  Its going to be a long time before I upgrade from G3F. Unlike the original poster I have no intention of quitting now that G3F has so many add-ons in my library.  I still want shaders, animals, places.  I am going to finally get my library sorted out.  I am going to make those shaders so I can dress up that old V4 stuff quickly.  I am going to make characters with Skin Builder's skins and dress them up even if I do have to manually fit the shoes and long dresses. I have decided that I won't purchase items for models currently in production.  I'll wait until V9 comes out and then I'll see what V8 had to offer.  That way I can price out the character with the upgrades I want and I won't have to collect and wait.  We all want to help push development forward. My budget is my budget so I'll be spending some money even if it is older items, Daz will get a cut to help develop Studio and work to wards building the Vicky of the future.

Yes the Vicky 5000 better do laundry, windows and dishes....One can dream....devil

With the dethroning and soon to be back-catalog banishment of yet another Genesis Victoria .... the longevity of Victoria 4 becomes more and more remarkable. Even in the Poser World ...Dawn, Pauline, and the other wanna-be females just can't replace her. Long live the queen!!

This is just my feeling as a consumer, Genesis 3 is the the bankable sales chasis and will remain so for some time yet. I wouldn't fret. You'll continue to see Genesis 3 based characters and clothing being released for some time to come.

...that isn't always the case. Usually after a new figure iteration is introduced, content for the previous one tails off not long after. While one can use older clothing, hair, and textures on the newer model, going the other way is more difficult usually requiring additional expense for conversion utilities/scripts or tedious manual fitting/adjustment. Even as far back as a year and a half ago, new content releases for G2 were becoming scarce compared to G3.

  • I like to look to the positive, and I want DAZ and the vendors to all be making plenty of sales to continue along profitably. I am trying to look at G8 in that light, and understand the value of incremental improvements to the technology (even though what I've seen so far seems to be smaller increments than previous advances). So as a consumer wanting a business to do what it needs to to refresh itself and remain viable, I understand.

However, I will also express some frustration as an artist, in this respect: One feature of a maturing product line is that the products released for it have to work harder and be more creative to find fertile ground, and in my view we have in recent months indeed seen some truly excellent new releases for Genesis 3. Just a few stellar examples: Aeon Soul's recent Whymsy, daeyabbo's DeadBlade, the well-supported Centaur, Josh Crocket's the Fallen One, Saiyaness's Dale, among plenty of others - these gave me a feeling like "yes... we are really getting to the good stuff." Really creative, really unique entries. The main DazO figures, while not quite to the degree I would like, also stretched a little, giving some examples of older or more nuanced characters. Of course none of these are going away. But now the vendors, as they fully should, and I do not begrudge them in the least, will race to be the first to claim the ground necessary to round out the new figure. We need a mermaid, we need a blue skin, we need a scaly skin, we need veins, we need belly morphs, we need tattoos, we need ponytails, we need undergarments (we always need plenty of undergarments), we need a bard costume, we need hand poses, we really, really need dresses and shoes that don't look wrinkled.

None of what we have goes away, but the spotlight naturally shifts. The press to conquer unexplored territory in a mature field will be replaced by the necessity of filling in the obvious gaps. And many of the recent products that I have wishlisted are now a generation behind... so does the risk taken by the artist in making that really unique product get the reward it otherwise would have, if given the chance to remain "current-gen" a little longer, or will it be marked as a poor seller, less likely to be explored further? And when that really striking, must-have product comes out for Genesis 8, well then of course I'll have to buy the good old head and body morph bundle again for the 4th time :)

    Bravo, Sir! Well spoken!

So keep using Genesis 3.  There's tons of old content available, and quite often there are sales that go deeper the older the content is.  Now Genesis 3 content can enjoy that bonus.

I'm still using Genesis 2 mostly, and now I get the deeper discounts.

This is what I've totally agree! I believe that you haven't purchased so many and now it's time to look back. I don't understand why you think it's dooms for G3F.

  • I do understand the frustration of just getting used to something and wham...something new comes out. However, as someone who still uses V4, M4, K4...ect I really don't understand the level of doom and gloom I've seen. I have no major problem finding content for characters that I believe are like 10 years old or more. Even better is that content for those characters will go on sale making it easier for me to pick them up. Also I've noticed new stuff still gets put out for them at other places. Okay, so V8 came out and I can understand being frustrated that she's not necessarily an improvement, but I don't think she's going to completely destroy the V7/Genesis 3 market. Just as with Generation 4 (not to mention G1 & G2) there is still going to be a loyal market for G3 and still going to be PA's that will create content for those bases If you don't like her, then don't use her...don't buy anything for her...continue using the characters you much prefer. There is no one stating you have to upgrade or give up on what you are personally comfortable with using, content is still being made for G3 and is likely to continue for some time.

At this point, V8/G8 is more of a curiosity to me.  I'm pretty heavily invested in G2 and G3 (only been onboard with Daz since late January), and I expect that Genesis 3 will be relevant for some time yet.  Especially since it's going to take some time for all of the Content Designers to update their characters to G8, if they are even inclined to do so (some will update, others will not).  And Centaur 7, Ophelia, etc. just recently entered the Daz library, and the Genesis 3 library is pretty extensive at this point, so I think Genesis 3 has legs for some time yet.

Plus, it looks like a good amount of the Genesis 3 clothing and hair will port to Genesis 8 without too many issues, so you are good to go there.  Don't feel bad about buying those because they are still useful.

Heck, we have people here that still swear by Victoria 4, and she's no spring chicken these days...  So don't sweat it, man!

For whatever it's worth, I would expect that the much closer compatibility between G8 and G3 will make it much easier for content creators to create their products for both figures in many cases.

Churning the dev space reduces variety. Each new generation of genesis loses more of the "unusual" figures and bring in another 250 variations on the theme of Vicky.

my reaction is just an emotional response. I understand business is business, and you either advance or stagnate. that being said, it feels as though all of my characters, poses and morphs, have all been told they have a terminal illness, and only have a month to live. new g3 content will slowly fade away into obsolesence. it is disheartening, like losing a close friend.. i don't mean to upset anyone or offend; just not good at goodbyes is all.

I understand how you feel, but do understand that although G3 content will slow down, there will still be new items coming out for a while. Further, other items like Buildings, cars, and other props will still come out for DS and the G3 content you have (and will get) will still be useful.

Believe it or not, my main character is V4. I love her! I still can find new items for her and new props for my software of choice (Carrara 7Pro).

So let's not have a goodbye from you.

One suggestion is to treat G8 like a new member in the family like a baby.  You can love your old characters and get the chance to have them interact with new characters. I'm a little fascinated by a lot of people who rush their favorite character to the latest generation rather than just have the characters have new friends/enemies who have new wardrobes.

Well, so far I've managed to download the new Studio, G8F, and utility content for $0.  I got Redz' Morph Tutorial and setup for $0.  I transferred one of my original G3F characters to G8F and clothed it in G3F hair and clothing (which autofit perfectly) for $0.  So really, the only thing that I want/need to buy in order to use the new generation, is the pose converter.  Even that, I don't HAVE to have.  I can always just pose her manually.

All the old content still works perfectly.  So, I'm just saying, things are nowhere near as problematic as I thought they might be.  I will probably get the head and body morphs soon enough.  But, the point is, you can do plenty with G8F, right now, without any outlay.

So give her a try....;)  If you don't like her, nobody's saying you can't just stick with the old favorites.

So how about Honey and Centaur?

    yeah

  • Here I am almost 2years later, and I would like to thank DAZ and the wonderful PA's for their remarkable and continued support accross the board for G3. I apologizefor the original negativity of this thread, and have since adopted G8 as a new baby as was suggested, and am happy to report how beautifuly well she plays with others! They are both teriffic character platforms, and will admit a sense of anticipation mixed with caution as to what the inevitable G9 may bring. I do wish DAZ would give us a set of base tween characters for G8 before then. Thanks to all!

  • I'm only using G3

I wish DAZ would hurry up and release G9 so the G3 stuff will be cheaper!

    Sounds like a plan to me--the Cheaper G3 stuff--but I'll happily take Genesis & G2 freebies meanwhile. ;)

@ Wickedxxangel, glad you're still here. I am still doing G1,2,3 with the odd G8 dabbling using the few items I bought & some freebies.

I have a mountain of G8 stuff, but I find I still use the G3s more, and since they share a UV set and there are multiple ways of converting clothes, hair and poses in both directions, what I use is generally a hybrid... with a good amount of stuff from earlier gens mixed in.  Once it's converted into Iray, even some of my old V3/M3 stuff still llooks pretty good.

That said, I suspect G9 is coming but I really can't see rushing to embrace it unless there's some new truly incredible feature that only works with the new figures, not the handful of minor upgrades that came with G8.

  • I still mainly use G3 (due to having more characters, morphs (aging, youthening, clothes fitting etc) and other general content.

I have been slowly adopting a few G8 characters and they fit in scenes just fine with G3 so it's not an issue.

Not sure what G9 can bring to the table (unless it's animation improvements with extra bones and the like), or the 'make art' button - but I guess we'll find out this year.

I had my doubts about g3, I had my doubts about g8, and in each case a bunch of really creative stuff came out.

I mean, Centaur 7?? Wow. And the wide variety of old and different characters in G8...

I've started his hobby only very recently and all my generation specific investments (morphs, poses, clones, shoes) so far have been for G8. I'll most probably stay with G8 when G9 comes out... but I might actually move backwards and invest a little in G3. Centaur 7 just looks awesome!

I had originally skipped G3 and waited for G8. My experience was having to wait for enough utilities to come out before I could really start using G8 the way I wanted to. Meanwhile, the prices on G3 stuff were irresistible, especially when I could pick up 2 G3 pro bundles when purchasing a G8 pro bundle. I will likely follow the purchase pattern of waiting at least 6 months or longer after the release of G9 before opening up my pocketbook.

  • Just get what you need to do your artwork then stop! The vendors are making the same thing over and over without much new stuff just alot of the same! Hey, I understand they want to make a living but for many of us this is just a hobby. Consequently, you just get what is needed for your renders and if it is new and shiney but is not nessasary don't buy it! Just my 2cents

I have the Belle Dress for G3, then they came out with the Belle Dress for G8.  Same exact dress.  Why I asked?  Someone remarked 'because it was specifically made for her and not refit from the previous figure'.  Huh?  If  we're allegedly supposed to be able to go back and forth with clothing, why do we need an exact copy of the same dress? (other than the obvious one of more $ for them)  Then there's Summer Belle which is a shorter knee length version of the dress.  It states that it requires either the G3 Belle Dress or the G8 Belle Dress.  So if the short version can work for either dress, then why can't the original dress work for both?  Sounds like B.S.to me.

Because autofit is far from perfect. You don't have to buy the next version but those starting off with G8 may like a version which fits correctly, Summer Belle is a texture set which works on either vesion. Honestly its not BS have you tried autofitting a long dress?

Autofit works rather well but like every fully automatic process it can't work perfectly on everything, and you'll get a better result with a manual conversion specifically made for that item, where you can adjust the weight maps, add custom morphs, and so on. Long dresses and items with non standard body parts are typically items where manual adjustments are a good idea.

Moreover, Summer Belle is not a short version working on both figures, it's a texture set which works on both versions of the dress, which is very different.
