Genesis 7 for Genesis 8

Gravity Studios has several products such as this one https://www.daz3d.com/mei-lin-7-for-mei-lin-8 to create the Genesis 7 figure on the corresponding Genesis 8 figure. If I already own both the Genesis 7 figure and the Genesis 8 figure, I am trying to understand what, if any, is the real advantage of also getting these products?

I don't get the point of any of these addons either, just seems like a money grab more than anything.

What puzzles me is the packages seem to come with the makeup and textures from the 7 version which means DAZ has to be in on this to allow this. So they supply the textures and gravity studios supplies the morph?

It's about giving folks choice; they chose to buy, or not.

I've transferred a few accross myself; it doesn't take long, but it is quicker to buy the shape, I just prefer the practice. :)

Everything in Daz can be created by the user. Everything in the store is about giving users options. Yeah, G3 can be transfered over, but you can also buy one that already fully done for you. Just like you can buy pose presets, light presets, ect, ect. I have no issue with providing choice and convenience as that is the entire principle behind Daz Studio.

I do wish that they had better descriptions. When these first came out they confused pretty much everybody by what they were.

I actually wish the concept was expanded to more and older figures. How about a Aiko 3 for Genesis 8? Some people have been asking for this.

They give the shape of the Genesis 7 character for Genesis 8 -- you can do it yourself, yes, but it is a massive pain, at least to start with. They also do the map transfer to shift the textures from the million-and-one G7 UV sets to Base Male and Base Female; otherwise you'd either need to do that yourself (doable, to be sure, but also a minor pain) or to buy Redz' product that provides the UV map for Genesis 8.

    The advantage :

    • You can mix Mei Lin 7 morph with all the Genesis 8 exclusive morphs
    • All the maps use the Base female UV map, it 's useful when LIE presets are applied
    • If you don't own the original Mei Lin 7, this Genesis 8 version is less expensive.

I purchased Aiko 7 for Aiko 8, I don't plan to purchase the original figure because I want to use only Genesis 8 figures.

The interest is the same than these previous products

Don’t forget that a lot of these older legacy shape products, ie the ones for Gen 4 and earlier, came with clones to allow you to fit older clothing to the newer figure. As such the potential benefit was higher.

  • Yeah, I've been super confused about this as well. I have Mei Lin 7 and 8, so if I were to get the 7 to 8 item, does that mean I can apply it to Mei Lin 7 and then in power pose it'll be changed to be movable as if it's a Gen 8 character? I've been using power pose so much since I found out about it a month or two ago, but it never works with my Gen 3 characters so I've been focusing on my Gen 8 stuff instead, but Mei Lin 7 is one of my favorites.

You don't "apply it to Mei Lin 7". It's a G8 shape and textures to make G8F look like Mei Lin 7, not an add-on for Mei Lin 7.

So you would now have a G8 character, not a G3 character.

  • Oh, I see! Okay, thank you for the clarification on this!

You do need to own Mei Lin 8 in order for "Mei Lin 7 for Mei Lin 8" shape to work properly. But you do not need to own the original 7 character at all.

Actually, if you think about it, it is a good deal. The price of "ML7 for ML8" is a lot less than buying the ML7 base, and you get the benefits of the 8 series. So if you do not have ML7, this is the cheapest way to get her (assuming you want or already own ML8).

If you do have ML7, then it is a matter of how much you think your time is worth. Because ML7 has a unique UV, you must first bake her textures to match G3. It is not so hard, but it is a bit tedious. I've done it a few times. Transferring morphs is more tedious.
