Is the problem mostly with large 4096x4096 materials for small products compared to 4096x4096 for a wall? I mean when I get a room and it has a vase as part of it, should the vase material be 4096x4096? Or could it be say 1024x1024 and still be the same relavent resolution? And do smooth surfaces need a lot of "optional" maps that just present the same thing as the "default" setting?
I agree with First Bastion's point above. If someone buys a detailed living room, then they are likely to render at least a decent chunk of that, and the vase will thus be a small part of it, so does not need a huge texture map. However if I was to buy a prop product with contained just 10 different vases, I would expect them all to have fairly high resolution textures.
Regardless of the surface its used on, a 4K diffuse map will use the same amount of Vram as any other 4K diffuse map.
Not everything needs giant textures and some items dont need textures at all. It depends on the model. Something that should be considered when a product is made. What the OP described is a excesive.
