Can't unparent objects within a scene

Most scenes I have bought let you delete objects within the scene but I picked this great scene (Tropicana Inn) and I can't delete some objects within the scene, without deleting everything. I've tried unparenting the objects but that doesn't work, either. I can hide objects I don't want but that doesn't help me much with optimizing the render in iRay.

Is there a work-around for this? Do PAs do this for a reason? Thanks!

I don't know. It looks like it lists a bunch of items as props/individual props. You can try and parent to NONE as opposed to just trying unparent. Apparentlyt it's easier to deal with a set as one whole piece than all the parts separated. I also assume you're expanding the list of items in the scene and you know about grouping- and you see what's locked in with what. That's another thing to check.

If an object you want to delete is 'part of' a scene, you may have to change its opacity and hide it if it can't be removed. That is- if it has a surface thats individual.

Every modeler does things differently depending on how they learned and what modeling program they use. Without having this product I can't tell how or why it was done. The description says it has 16 props, are any of those the ones you want to delete?

Yes, I'm good with using groups. Now I'm away from that project but I think that when I was trying to unparent to none, the option didn't even show up. It was enough that I actually restarted DS and it still happened; then tried a different scene and unparenting to none worked as it should. I think I ran into this with another product before and couldn't figure it out, I'll see if I can track it down.

Thanks for the tip on changing the opacity Serene Night, I hadn't thought of that.

Some props can be deleted (it uses a lot of instances, for example) but there's no way to edit the "big" prop. So there are a few structures within the "big" prop but they can't be edited, manipulated, etc. directly.

    Cheers!

I don't know if you're familiar with Geometry Editor, but you can use it to delete individual polygons (and whole objects) from your scene. That should mean less geometry for your GPU to load at render time.

    Instructions from Petercat:

"Once you've chosen the geometry editor tool, right click anywhere in the viewport to get the menu.
In "selection mode", marquee selection will let you delete huge rectangles of stuff, and everything behind them.
Lasso Select will let you lasso huge chunks, and everything behind them.
Drag selection will let you choose individual polygons.

Once you've selected what you want, click "Geometry visibility", then "Hide Selected Polygon(s)"
Then go to "Geometry Editing" and select "Delete Hidden Polygons"

Deletion is irreversible, so delete in small-ish bites and save often.
    SAVE....OFTEN!

    "

  • Thanks, Kitsumo. I ended up doing a combination of the things folks suggested. Hexagon also helped, and at least for me it was the easiest way to delete large chunks of the scene. A lot of work but I learned a few new things, so thanks again!
