Mermaid tail would have to be geografted add-on not morph to look and function right.
Think a general purpose proportion and aging pack would be better and be safer for DAZ than a specific Kids 5.
Definitely would like an Ape World, Canine World and Feline World morphs. You listening Rawart?

Safer? Are you referring to the "3D child porn" arguments I've seen on these forums when someone brings up that they want a new kids generation? I'm not buying the excuse. Do we stop making everything because somebody, somewhere might possibly do something bad with it? I mean, with the morphing tech in Genesis 1 and now 2, it's not like a kids shape would have no vendor support since jeans, shorts, etc made for anybody can fit on anybody, or in the case of Genesis 2, likely the same sex shapes though I am hoping they will work on both.

Yes that is what I was implying without saying. It would be less likely to draw unwanted attention from both the 'wrong people' and business partners like credit card processors and PayPal. On the other hand a K5 package could have the 'no genitalia' switch that Basic Child has which would make it safer from the point of making it harder (not impossible) for the 'wrong people' to abuse.

Over the years, DAZ has had several different types of included content. Changes in the sdk can and has caused problems with previous included content. When DS went from the Egyptian to the Fairy Forest content during late beta testing, the read me clearly stated that due to changes in the sdk, the older content would no work as expected.

Excuse me, what do you mean by "going from the Egyptian to the Fairy Forest"? I cannot understand that, sorry. A few words of description would be appreciated. When it comes to that new model, frankly, I'm afraid - just judging from what can I see at the moment in the shop - this new V6 is going to be developed mainly for pin-up purposes. I'm old-fashioned and that's definitely not a way to get my interest aroused around her. Nearly all of you are worried about the genitalia - I think a more worrying problem is that of compatibility. My hope is more and more content - especially clothes - will get the basic "make bigger/smaller" dial also known as scaling. It's what is, in my humble opinion, the most helpful parameter for conforming to various figures. I also hope Genesis - the real one, a "hero with a thousand faces" to quote Campbell - is going to receive more attention. My first suggestions in that matter are:
    - partial morphs to get the figure's lower parts into a mermaid tail,
    - more diversified children (or at least a new Kids 5 installment),
    - new animals to be created on Genesis, especially primates (I despise the ones that are available now apart from Gorilla for Genesis, sorry).

Unfortunately for DAZ, V6 doesn't offer any of my dreams at the moment, so I'll save my tight budget for other things. Just not into the sexy stuff, I'm afraid.

DS in early public beta release provided what the Egyptian included content. Among them was M2 and V2 reduced res figures. In the late stage of beta development (roughly .96 or .97, i'd have to dig through my old archives to find which but I still have them), DAZ switched from the Egyptian to the Fairy Forest content. The read me for the beta release stated due to changes in the sdk, the old included content might not function as expected.

The Fairy Forest content (which can be found in Poser format only now in the store as the 3D Starter Bundle), gave users the M3 and V3 reduced res figures. Fairy Forest was continued through last betas and into RC1 and late RC2. Last RC2 and RC3 changed included content again. Instead of the Fairy Forest, DAZ changed to the beach scene and V4 QuickStart. When RC3 was released, the Fairy Forest included content had some major issues. This was not fixed by installing the full versions purchased from DAZ in their DS native format during beta development. I brought this to the attention of tech support and was informed that due to sdk changes, the older DS native file format no longer worked as expected and should not be used.

DS4 then changed from V4 QuickStart and the beach scene to Genesis and the current included content. Given the long history through the betas and the RC's, there may come a time when changes to the sdk break something in Genesis 1. Will DAZ do this on purpose? Doubt it. Will it happen? It could and, in all likelihood, will at some point in time. Will it happen tomorrow or next week? No. Could it happen next year? Who knows?

Hope this explains what I meant.

And I just thought that 'going from Egyptians to Fairy Forest' was an elaborate metaphor :)

I doubt paypal would drop DAZ simply because someone is using something that it wasn't designed for ... like they did with some of the ... naughtier sites out there whose sole business is based on selling products for 3d porn. Not having a decent child shape affects me in my part time greeting card business. Until YT came out I had to use the very limited Luke/Laura and at the moment I have to use a custom shaped K4 to get rid of the melonhead and it's still very limited compared to what I can do with Genesis. As I said, should we start getting rid of everything because someone might use it for nefarious purposes? I can do a LOT with genesis, I just can't seem to create a properly proportioned child.

Genesis as the "Hero With A Thousand Faces"...that's perfect! Don't worry, a bunch of new Genesis products are in the works or awaiting release--this based on bits of information I've picked up from various public places, including a Genesis mermaid from what I hear (more information on that is publicly available elsewhere, but I won't say any more about it because the PA hasn't posted about it here as far as I can tell). I'm hoping for some Genesis kids too, and in fact I'm half-tempted to try to make some better child shapes myself, even though I don't have any experience modeling and hardly know where to begin... (I do have the tools for it, and access to some good tutorials...). New Genesis primates (and new Genesis-like animal figures...I want a morphing carnivore) would be awesome too.

Regarding Victoria 6, demand for realistic female figures and feminine clothing is a very large segment of the 3D market, so it makes sense that DAZ would want to put out a new and superior female figure in order to try to capture some of that demand. Pinups aren't really my thing either...I primarily look for sensible fantasy clothing (think Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, not Conan or Xena). I imagine V6's wardrobe options will probably mirror the options of earlier female figures: lots of "sexy" clothing in various genres, but also a good assortment of more sensible options in various genres (sometimes it may seem like there isn't much regular clothing for Vicky, but if you browse the store, there's actually quite a lot). Plus, wilmap, who has made a ton of excellent free regular clothing for Genesis, has already started making Genesis 2 outfits. That's encouraging too.

Thank you. That's exactly what I see: thousands of "voluptous" clothes that are so impractical! All those Genesis Scouts and so on. What person would go trekking with high-heels??? Take exeption to insane ones, of course ;). I adore Wilmap's, Arah3D's and Andolaurina's (I hope I don't mess up the nicknames) outfits, of course accompanied by Eblank's, Chacornac's and Chohole's textures. They are really practical and pretty items. I assume I have somewhere around 90% of their galleries from ShareCG. I wish DAZ artists would stick to similar designs. There's nothing wrong with variety - in fact, that's what ought to be protected - but I mean VARIETY, not only sexy stripped garments.

If it's possible to make poses and partial shapes (let's call them so for the purpose of this post), like Ranaki/Ranaka frog legs, then it can't be too difficult to make a tail. The shape of it itself is quite simple and as far as I know, there is a snake tail (The Gorgon for Genesis). It must work in a similar way. That animal world-themed products were interesting, but not exactly what I long for. They're too humanoid/alien for my tastes. But you get what I look for - more detailed morphs that aren't only monsters and aliens. They ought to correct Gorilla for Genesis head too: I always get that alpha male bulgy top that females and adolescents lack (you might check my renders of Nyiramachabelli in Scott's Genesis Custom-Dialed Character Contest to see what I'm talking about).

Mrgrayewolf, I agree with your opinion. You can't determine what people do with 3D stuff, but interestingly there's a bunch of very troubling nudes without any mature content tags and nobody seems cautious about it. Again, I see no need in such parts for kids (a similar thing goes for adults in most cases, but you're free to disagree). Why are people troubled by a vision of Kids 5, whereas slightly older Young Teens 5 are okay with them?

Icprncss, I'm thankful. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I understand I'm a beginner, but DAZ Studio's history interests me a lot. I heard about the company once working for Smith Micro and then separating (nothing strange in this; Poser figures - in my humble opinion - lack the realism of DAZ models, yet Poser is a very expensive tool). I know there had been times of glorious weekly freebies, PA giveaways and such (I even managed to grab a few from 2012 before they made real freebies Platinum Club-only). If you know where can I access some texts about the topic, like photographs of those freebies, how the site looked like and so on, I'd be very happy to read it. The archives are somehow locked for me.

The Egyptian stuff and Fairy Forest stuff was the content included in earlier versions of DAZ Studio--way before my time. The Fairy Forest stuff was updated as part of the 3D Starter Pack, which (although dated) works perfectly well in DS4.

Thank you, Scott. You're too solving my lust for knowledge in the matter :D. Sadly, I couldn't find Gorilla LE. They must have moved it somewhere I can't gain access to.

When speaking of V6, it looks like there's a similar thing that came out with M5 Pro Suite: why does M5 get a troll and that Scoopback Mini Dress??? Not V6 is getting Western Gear and some stables - I'm talking about those so-called V6 freebies: http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-6-s-fantastic-freebies/.

I'm not gonna fuss on those freebies cause they are what they are. Either items we already have or items we never would use to begin with. I didn't get V6 for the freebies, but they they happen to put something in there I don't have an can use would be good. I kinda want to keep track of what % of them end up falling into the three buckets. Maybe a thread even LOL, we could all share how the lottery worked for us.

    So far
    Items would never use 1
    Items already own 2*
Items that are new for me and I want 0

*although I own two of the items, I still wouldn't ever use them LOL. I only have em cause of a bundle!

Thus far I am running a perfect score on that one - I didn't already own any of them, and I am sure I can find use for them somewhere down the road. Then again, I pretty much can find a use for anything ;)

But there is bad publicity that such move brings them. Microsoft recently relented due to bad publicity; DAZ3D is much smaller, sure, but it doesn't mean it or any company is immune to it.

Chances are, they will not drop Genesis 1 right away. There is still no Genesis 2 Male yet (no idea for how long) and till he appears, DAZ will have to support Genesis 1 as "the male figure". But I am actually curious how many female characters for Genesis 1 (if any) we will see in DAZ store from now on.

And sometime in the future, when more people have adopted Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male, also have some clothes, morphs, poses etc. for them, DAZ will suddenly come out and say that due to new changes in DAZ studio programming it is absolutely necessary to stop supporting the old, useless, obsolete Genesis 1, that they did their best to avoid that for customer´s sake, but that there is no way around it, that progress cannot be stopped and that surely no customers would want DAZ Studio development and betterment to be stopped just because of Genesis 1. And many customers will just nod and say "true, true, if there is absolutely no other possible way, then just go ahead, we want a better, more advanced DAZ studio, and if Genesis 1 is in the way then away with it". Other customers will be angry, but that happens almost always when new DAZ studio software and/or figure comes around. And all of those angry customers will have Genesis 2 as well (since it comes free with DS), so in the end they will cope with the inevitable and say "never mind, at least we have Genesis 2 and can use old Genesis 1 clothing on it via autofit". And where will be "bad publicity" then? You do realize that Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are both in the same DUF file format right?

When I get a pack with gens in it, they just end up in the recycle bin. It's really none of my business what people do with them, I just don't have a use for them in my renders. In fact I would lose business and might get in legal trouble since my part time business is creating birthday and special occasion cards for kids and teens.

Fortunately for me, I got today's stables and bows with Horse 2. The lights weren't in my library, sadly, but surely I can live without them :D. A thread would be good. Maybe DAZ staff could draw some conclusions from it (the same with making your own bundles).

Mrgrayewolf, the same for me. M5 and V5 bundles came to me with the stuff I don't need and I never had a thought of installing them.

Also when speaking of how many V6 items were released, not only Wilmap's summer dress is cool and free, but Adam Thwaites has a nice free pose set here]http://www.most-digital-creations.com/v6_floor_1.htm]here, so maybe some savings can be achieved with this pricey V6.

DAZ Studio's history interests me a lot. I heard about the company once working for Smith Micro and then separating

That is somewhat inaccurate. DAZ 3D made the first figures for Poser, way back in it's history, when Poser was owned by Creative Labs.

The break with that tradition came when Creative Labs decided to change direction and Poser was sold to a consortium called "Curious Labs" who produced P5. I won't go into that debacle in any more detail.

Curious Labs failed and sold Poser to E frontier and they in turn sold it to Smith Micro.

Daz Studio came into being around the time pf the P5/Curious Labs era.

For now, yes, completely same format. And as I said, it would be highly improbable to drop support for a figure that can be adjusted to whatever new technology would be coming with the most ease from purely technical standpoint.

Yes, I can see where the misunderstanding is, and it is my fault. Your post mentioned "(little) support already...." which for some reason I overlooked.

Heh! Hard not overlooking things in the plethora of threads and wall-of-text-posts around here (not that I am innocent in that regard ^^)

    Gedd said:

I don't see the split in support a bad thing because I see the two serving different markets and because I don't see the lack of support you do. That is probably partially due to the fact that what I pick up from the stores is supplemental. Also, I see the market as a dynamic area that is opening for growth and more PA's being able to come into the marketplace. In other words, where you see lack of support, I see potential for growth and opportunity. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that because we are coming at this from different perspectives, we see a different win/loss perspective.

Well first off, thanks for your reply. It's nice to read a well-written and balanced post once in a while (someone has to balance out my inarticulate rage and hate-speech, I guess ;D). I respect your position and even though I don't share your - might I say? - optimism, I sure hope you are right, that this is a good thing in the end. If Genesis 1 and 2 find a large number of eager and creative new content creators for them - that would be great. It's just that after what happened following the release of Genesis 1, I don't think this is going to happen. There have been some new artists who did great new stuff for Genesis and some older ones who really started to shine with Genesis. But compared to what has been going on with V4 during the same time - I wouldn't say Genesis has really summoned an influx of new content creators. The greatest part of content creators for V4 did not switch to Genesis. Despite that, the greatest part of content creators for Genesis were or still are content creators for V4.

I don't see Genesis 2 really breaking down any walls here. If it was compatible with Poser - that would be big and might have changed the game, no questions asked. But the way things are now? I don't think there will be too many new artists. I think Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 will now have to share the Genesis 1 market. Some artists will leave. Some new ones will come. But I think V6's most common UV set will be V4. And her clothes will most autofitted V4 and V5 clothes. And that is not thriving support for a new figure and it is not a step forward and I hope I am wrong.

I will summarize what I was referring to about previous posts... I see Genesis 1 as fundamentally different then Gen6... as others have also mentioned since (my original posting.) I see Gen6 as the successors to the previous Gen1-4. I personally wish they hadn't referred to V6 as Genesis 2 as it is my perspective that Genesis is a fundamentally different vision and should continue to grow tangentially and separate from the more specific Gen(X) lines. It has to do with specialization vs generalization... there is room for both, as they serve different functions.

If one sees a limited set of resources for generating content for the two, this could be an unhappy tradeoff. If one takes the approach of trying to equip their specialized characters with the whole gamut of more generalized clothing etc... again, it is an unhappy tradeoff.

However, if DAZ did take the approach of keeping the Genesis line and the Gen(X) lines going but separate, people could choose either platform or both depending on their specific goals... at that point, it would just be a matter of whether new PA's in the market could keep up with providing content for both lines.

The final issue with this equation is, will the market support PA's generating content for two lines... Again, here I see a market that is ripe for growth where this would be the case, but I realize I could be wrong. I am betting part of my livelihood on it however (that the 3D market is ripe for growth.)

I agree. I believe Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 can serve different roles (although V5 now seems utterly useless). And I, too, think Genesis 2 should just haven been called V6.

I also think it's not up to DAZ any more. Now the ball is in the PA's court to decide whether or not to embrace V6. But why would anyone create V6 clothing, when they can just create V5 or even V4 clothing and say: "Want V6 clothing - meh, just use autofit!". In the end, the majority of V5 characters by my estimate - are V4 characters with a subpar Genesis morph. If this is the situation now, what is going to happen with an additional figure? And will three different figures (V4, the Poser figure, Genesis, the Jack of all Trades, and Genesis 2, the realistic figure) each find a strong enough customer base to justify specialized content? I am not sure. I wish you the best of luck, though, and hope that your, well, 'bet' pays off.

[Edit] In the vision I have, I would like to see Genesis grow to be instance friendly, like 'Send in the Clones' on steroids, but resource friendly... something that could take advantage of it's flexibility to fill out crowd scenes with a semi automated method similar to VUE's ability to 'paint' trees, plants, etc... across a landscape, but with characters in an area such as the seating of a circus tent complete with varying shapes and clothing within predefined parameters. If anyone isn't familiar with what I'm referring to with VUE, I highly recommend looking at a couple/few videos of their Dynamic Ecosystem at either their site or YouTube. Then think of that, but with people/outfits/morphs... This vision is a ways off, but Genesis is on the right track for being able to eventually do something like that it would seem. This end goal is fundamentally different then trying to get the most realistic human possible, like the difference in the cherry blossom in a background tree is to a closeup of the cherry blossom. Putting the detail of a closeup blossom into a tree with thousands of blossoms, then replicating that tree would not only be unfeasible, but a waste of resources. I would like 'realistic' background characters, such as Genesis, but I would also like 'hyper-realistic' characters for closeup and main character functions.

Well, I don't have VUE, but I did see some VUE renders. DAMN, this thing is powerful. And yes, this might be the path Genesis is headed.

Thanks again, Chohole and Scott. I don't recognize the companies' full names so well, so I'll just sum it up I thought about the company that invented and sells Poser. Now I'm off to reading Scott's essay :). Splendid!

Creative Labs bought Poser, they didn't create it, Both Bryce and Poser were made by Meta-Creations. Daz picked up the rights to several programs, namely Bryce and Cararra, and Poser bounced companies till Smith Micro picked it up.

I am a poser user, so I guess I would tend to know more. Have copies of poser from each of the companies I mentioned. In fact I was one of the people who got caught up in the P5 hype, the one and only time I have been an "early adopter".

You do realize that Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are both in the same DUF file format right?

For now, yes, completely same format. And as I said, it would be highly improbable to drop support for a figure that can be adjusted to whatever new technology would be coming with the most ease from purely technical standpoint. Then why make the claim that DAZ will drop support for one, when you know that isn't even possible since they are the same format.

Coincidentally, I very recently wrote this history of DAZ figures, which I've now posted to the New User Forum. Hope you find it helpful!

Really nicely done Scott! Thanks so much for doing that! I am sure lots of people will find it a huge help. :)

You confuse me with somebody probably? I don't recall making such claim. Can you tell me which post it was, so I can explain what I meant?

Ok I got muddled there, Thanks for the correction meant to say Metacreations. Creative labs had nothing to do with Poser.

Meta tools made Bryce, Fractal designs made Poser, and they merged, with another couple of Companies including Ray Dream to form MetaCreations. Carrara (previously RayDream Studio) went to Eovia and Bryce went to Corel when MetaCreations sold them off.

I think he was meaning previously in this thread (or maybe it was another) where you were worrying support for Genesis 1 could possibly be dropped and had inquired about it but I think that was answered then and the discussion has moved on from there :O)

OT: Anyone done any renders of V6 yet that they want to share? Maybe some comparison renders between V5 and V6 with what you notice has changed etc? Just some various comparisons. With skin, without...in certain poses...general shape. Etc Might be nice to see some more of that :)

It's disappointing V6 still has sticky breasts.

Sticky breasts? In what way? Could you post a render of what you mean? Just be sure if you post a render, don't put any texture on her or gens etc

A render of Victoria 6 with some dials spun on her face to give her a few sharper features.

I theorized on what was possible and what wasn't making sense but never claimed any of it will be true.

I knew that was what you meant :O) People worry about what might happen or question if it will. It happens every release. I know I did it when Genesis 1 released in regards to Generation 4. No worries. It is to be expected and is all over now :O)
