I find positions section planes to be irksome. I would prefer sets have hideable walls and ceiling
Looks like the camera with section planes has been updated to not throw an error. So you can redownload it if you want.
I wonder if anyone would pay for an Iray material that enable us to use HDRI for interiors without the use of section planes or wall/ceiling hiding?
Yes, yes and yes... Anything to make interior lighting in iray more practical and efficient.
I'd buy it 10 times just to make sure I won't run out of it ; ). But I think it's impossible...
I use two methods. If I can get away with making some walls and ceilings invisible, I'll use HDRI but if not I use Ghost Lights with an additional spotlight to add some depth and specularity. I agree that Ghost Lights alone result in flat, dull surfaces so some additional light is required. Nevertheless, Ghost Lights are great for improving render times as are HDRI lights if the camera angle will allow for dome light. The only warning about HDRi is that if the room needs to be fully enclosed, having the HDRI active (Render Settings > Dome and Scene Lights) can slow the render considerably. So an encosed room with just GL and spot (Render Settings > Scene Only) will be quicker.
Ghost lights were never intended to be the only lights in a render. They are intended to compliment your existing lighting, and to help light up areas that your light doesn't illuminate on its own.
And they sell because they are easy. I am perfectly capable of setting up planes etc., but I don't want to. Every little bit of time saved is a big deal for me, and ghost lights are just easy.
Environment/ Finite Box/Draw Dome Off and set the Width, Depth and Height to slightly less than the dimensions of the room to be lit. It doesn't really work that well though.
The ambient light on the columns and the back wall is from an HDRI.
I can confirm that it is possible to use HDRI to light interior, but it requires a custom shader. In the image below, inside the walls there is an hdri prop.
