Aligning the translation tool

How do you align the translation tool with the object. Too often I find it does not align with the center of an object making it hard to pose. This is particularly true when the tool is somewhere outside of the actual object I need to pose and not visible when fine tuning a pose. Or is for instance in the middle of the sword when I need it at the hilt.

    Joint editor (move the green widget to where you want the center axis)

    -or-

    create a null and parent the item to it

    If it's a figure, make sure it hasn't been translated with the hip (or whatever the root bone is) when you are trying to use the figure node.

    So what does the red widget do? should I also move that on?.

    The red is the end point, if this is using the Joint Editor.

    I'm not clear on what the "end poin" is. Is there documentation that explains all of theis?
