Question about Subway Train by Polish

Can someone who has it let me know if the Subway train by Polish is rigged or textured so that it can be divided lengthwise? So that you can turn off half the car to compose shots and render more easily? Or if it at least has a separate interior and exterior?

I've got the Subway IN from Rendo, which does have separate interior and exterior, and I can figure out how to composite separate render passes if I absolutely must, but if there's an option that will let me do things in a single render pass, that would be strongly preferred. Subway IN is somewhat dated, understandably, but I think that's not going to be easily avoided. Unfortunatley, every train option I have or can find is designed so that you can turn off the outside surfaces -- all of them, which winds up with a floating interior -- or some mix of interior surfaces that doesn't quite work.

I have to admit, I'm mildly puzzled that this is such a consistent issue. I can't possibly be the first person to think that if I wanted to shoot straight across into a set of seats on a train car, I need some way for half the train to go away.

Unfortunately, it's a more insistent issue with Iray as well, since it really detests completely enclosed spaces. The ability to open that confined space is really required.

Any information will be much appreciated.

    You cam simply use a section plane in Iray to achieve this effect. Works on anything.

    Regarding the train, as far as I remember from last time I used it it does not have any way to turn off half. But i’ll Check when I get to my computer because I would usually not look for that kind of functionality and simply use a section plane. So. I might have missed it. I’ll let you know.

    It has a lot of different parts you can make invisible if that's what you want, see attached screenshot.

    Thanks, that was actually very helpful. It doesn't quite have the layout I need, and Subway IN does, so I'll see if I can make that work. (Subway IN is old enough that even Poser wasn't doing much with bump or displacement, so its textures have no dimension. This is going to be ... interesting.)

    Ah, OK. I just found a tutorial that let me know that I was thinking of section planes the wrong way. (That they have direction is just ... odd.) With those, what I may be able to do is turn off the exterior to set up the scene, then turn it back on for render. Thanks!

    Just for completeness' sake: I wound up buying Polish's Subway Train (it's very much on sale at the moment), turning off the insides which were wrong for what I want, then using the insides of Subway IN, which were perfect. It required some scaling and grouping, but it seems to be working just fine.

    Also, the scaling for both is wildly off, which is puzzling. Even allowing that the characters I used were somewhat tall, I needed to scale Polish's subway up to something like 140% to get them to fit. When I tried having them stand without scaling the train, a G8M's head poked through the top. Subway IN's scaling was more or less OK, but then had to be fiddled to fit it inside Polish's subway.

    Still have to use a section plane, because there are parts of Polish's subway that I don't want to turn off, although I can, but that's fine. Thanks again for mentioning that.

    @vwrangler

    Here is a quick and dirty example of using a section plane for an interior shot of Polish's subway. Image 1 show the camera view without the section plane. For image 2 I quick positioned a section plane just inside the walls. And for image 3 I used the same section plane, but I also activated "clip lights" from the parameters. That avoid the odd light incoming from nowhere effect you can. get. Overall, you never have to worry if there are wall that can be turned on/off in a model if you use sections palnes and Iray.

    For thd77...Bonjour

    Would you explain a little bit what you mean by section plan ?

    i have the subway in font on me in DAZStudio and i really don't know where and what of this?

    Thanks

    @Martial:

    Allowing that I've now used section planes with all of one scene, here's what I understand of them and hope it helps.

    A section plane basically lets you tell Iray, "Act as if the part of the scene behind the section plane doesn't exist when you render this scene." It's useful when you have smaller fully-enclosed structures or items that you can't remove because of the way something is built. It's not part of the Subway Train; it's something that Studio does.

    This tutorial may help -- it's what I used to understand what to do: https://slimmckenzie.deviantart.com/journal/Tutorial-Iray-Section-Plane-Node-beginner-661286658

    One thing that isn't so clear in the tutorial is that section planes have direction. They come in laying flat on the "floor" of the workspace, and you have to use the x-rotate or z-rotate to raise it up to a level where it's in front of the camera. (I with it had stronger markers to see where it is.)

    Section planes are also fairly small when you first put them in the scene (from the Create menu), so you may also need to scale it, depending on how much of the scene you need to make invisible and how close to the camera you need the section plane to be.

    I found I needed to use a negative x-rotate number to make the section plane face the right way, relative to the camera. For the scene I did with the train, it was comparatively easy; I just needed a -90 x-rotate number to make it divide the train car lengthwise in half in front of the camera. If you're shooting at an angle, your x-rotate and z-rotate numbers may be different, and you may also need to use the y-rotate for a pivot if you're shooting at an angle the way that @thd777 did.

    Hope this is helpful and that @thd777 can fill in the stuff I've left out.

  • Scale doesn't matter, the plane is a locator showing position and rotation

    @Martial

    In  addition to what @vwrangler already posted, I find this tutorial by Snow Sultan very useful. At the link you can also find a Section Plane node that has already a plane primitive parented to it. That makes it much easier to work with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCJfIlk-4Yo

    And, indeed the scale doesn't matter, the section plane is infinite, but if you just load the node it only shows the center point and it is ponting down. That's where Snow Sultans prop comes in handy.

    PS: It should also be pointed out that6 you can see the effect of the section plane only in the render or in the Iray preview. I have attached a screenshot to show where the section plane can be found.

    @ Martial: would you be so kind as to tell me what subway station you are using with it? Does it scale properly?

     I did a short render and i thinks now it was the central district subway station

    You can try these:
