From a base standpoint Genesis8Female base is the same shape as Genesis3Female, and can take the same materials. Just because you do not like some of the G8F models that have come out does not mean you should throw out a blanket statement claiming that all G8F models are bad. There have been some fantastic charcters that have come out for her.

DE Alice:
Omnix, for those times that you need someone not qiute human. :P
This one is using one of the face and body combos for the G8F LY Spirited Girls set:
Personally, one or two of the promo art renders I thought looks like Barbara Streisand, mostly because of the nose, although I wouldn't know Barabara Streisand's nose from anyone Jimmy Durant's. I liked the nose on V8.
Okay, but what's wrong with the models built off the base being "average to bad"? Isn't that a realistic expectation of real women because most of us aren't generic-looking dolls? Other DAZ users I've seen kept clamoring for "realism" for years and when DAZ delivers then it's a problem. Just like real life, if you want attractive magazine glamour it still takes work; right makeup, right lights, and right editing software (which includes Photoshop and all the available relevant morphs for the character.)
Personally, I like this "average" look. With a few exceptions, this generation looks more diverse than the previous one "out of the box". The only thing I dislike, just like the previous generation's other characters, is lots of angular features. I like softer rounder faces but I'm aware it can be done.
However, I'm aware of the importance of beauty. Most DAZ/Poser renders I had seen before getting into this myself were fetish art. Except I still don't see how the appearance base figures or PA figures are a problem. But then I don't really buy "characters", I buy for skins and morphs to mix it up. After all, this is art and art will always takes work for it to look good. If it's not the character, then it's the lighting, environment, camera angles, etc. Just throwing this together with default settings isn't artistic at all, in my opinion.
Besides, most of the audience doesn't care about the technical side of things unless they're DAZ/Poser users too.
Count your blessings that at least you have female characters and there are plenty of ladies to choose from.. .=-)... Female characters are released here and elsewhere daily.
Personally I seldomly use basic characters without some change, either to his or hers skin or his and hers looks. There are about 2000 morphs in the store in order to create your own personal taste du jour. If that does not help there is also the route via self made custom morphs in programs like Hexagon (free), Blender (even freeer) or payed options like ZBrush......but his all costs some effort and a more or less steep learning curve. But hey that is what a hobby is about, isn't it. Aquiring skills, while having fun doing so.
Greets, ArtisanS....
P.S. Masterstroke, LOL.....great job.
LOL, I live in LA and all the beautiful CG models look very real to me because there is such a plethora of beautiful people here. And the "orange" skin people complain about looks just like normal spray tans and the perfect hair people don't like look just like great hair extensions, so to me, the beautiful girls look the most real and V8 and Stephanie 8 do not look real to me.
I find, in general, with a few exceptions, (like recently Monique 8 and previously V7) the PA models are mostly better looking than Daz Originals and I only get the Daz Originals for the bundles, and it usually takes a couple of months for the PAs to do their best work when a new generation is released, but then, they can come up with some true beauties! I always like to tweak characters and mix and match and buy every morph kit so I can make my characters original anyway, but it's nice to start with a nice morph, makeup and skin, of course!
What? That link went to Tiana who I think is gorgeous! I can't recall a non-beautiful character coming from Silver...
Yes, there were three links ( but it wasn't so clear because they were all next to each other), and the other two were as gorgeous as Tiana (to me), but they are not the usual types that get kind of hard to tell apart because they are the same brand of beautiful.
The only G8 DO that I have liked any renders of has been Monique. That said, I haven't liked all of the renders. I have seen a rise in unrealistic plasticy looking people. I guess it is the lighting. I don't often buy PA characters because I have been let down by the texture quality a few too many times. In general, I usually prefer DO characters for their typically higher quality. My eyes glaze over when I look at most of the new PA characters because they tend to look almost exactly the same, per artist. There are artists on here with pages full of characters that look almost identical. It is sort ok like, "Here is so and so with her slightly more and silghtly less attractive twins." I say this not for the sake of complaining, but in the hope that it will be taken into consideration. There have been a few PA characters that I have liked.
And I hated Monique's renders as I think they make her look much too oily. To each his own, I guess.
I find there are less renders on Monique's page where she looked like a plastic doll.
My thought is G8 is new, within time G8 will have numerous characters to choose from, same as other base figures in the past. I agree beauty is personal preferance. Although many characters are not what I define as beauty, I like the variety of choices now, different nationalitities, skin tones, elite skin, HD skin, resource kits, mascularity kit, etc..... lot's of options to choose from. PA's have been creating amazing products, working hard 2 make 3D enjoyable 4 all of us.
I've recently compared renders in the gallery to actual pictures of real people and if anything the contrast between various light highlights still aren't pronounced enough and varied enough in tonal range and the bright highlights often turn out too white and too defined rather than a gradient into other tonal ranges. With Genesis 8 there are still plenty of flat tonal range renders which I have no trouble making myself
but it is a fact that is is easier to get better tonal range results with DS 4.10 & Genesis 8 human skin shader presets on the few G8 characters I've bought that I've bought so far than the Genesis 3 characters. ( except toward the end of the Genesis 3 cycle those the shader presets became quite good for many characters (Dale is my 'realistic' favorite - I apply his settings now sans textures for an easy varience in tonality compared to other shader presets for skin)).
And the tonality of the colors on the diffuse maps are lacking. I understand the from an comodity perspective why DAZ 3D doesn't make it's general release people models such that they have uniquely identifying characteristics outside of geometry but the users of DAZ Studio need a way to generate diffuse tonality variations that are plausible on the models and while Genesis 8 is a big step forward in facial expression geometry it is difficult to harness effectively because the pose controls don't match the underlying muscles structures such they it is easy to pose a face that distorts the muscles in a plausible way. You'll notice big smiles and expressions actually squeeze blood out of a some areas making for more fluid tonal variations in the face. Such subtleties are missing.
Well i also thought they are all ugly until i have seen Edie 8... compared to her all above are pretty nice..LOL

Anyway, i tried recreatiing my Model with genesis 3 and 8 but somehow its doesn't work.
So i still stick with genesis 2 female: my own Character Cathy Toshlyra©
I had not seen this topic previously.
I guess it is always a matter of taste. But to be honest I am a bit disappointed too with the Genesis 8 DAZ Originals. I have bought several G8, but only 3 DO's (V8, O8 and M8), as they have not resulted quite satisfactory. My favourite female model remains Vicky 7, which I recently upgraded to G8. Vicky 8... yeah, she's pretty but not like 'wow'. Still, it's tastes. I adored V5, but I was really disappointed with V6. V5 remained my favourite until V7 unseated her.
Ollie and Edie are a different matter. There DAZ went for the look of a fantasy character.
I'm going to throw a wild idea and ask DAZ to hire Mousso to design V9 and M9. I demand soft body and strand hair physics for G9! LOL (There is no harm in asking
)
There are also utilities that make it very easy to use Genesis 8 clothing and poses, for genesis 3.
I have a hard time understanding this line of thinking. Unless you are needing a VERY specific looking character like Sakura, then you can mix and match all the DO characters and the various morphs that there are and all the addon characters and make what you want, what you find attractive.
I look at every DO character as nothing more than a set of morphs to add to the gene pool. Use the tools in front of you and create what you want. great tool to create uniwe figures in the SimTenero Randomizer. it takes any morphs or figures you have installed and then creates random figures and faces https://www.daz3d.com/simtenero-randomizer
I love Mousso's characters, but she is doing exactly that, creating something from the morphs she finds attractive and then creating a skin for it and selling it. There is a huge dofference between that and creating a new generation base figure
You just left me thinking about it. I had written an entire explanation and then I re-read it, and found it still not satisfying. Now I'm thinking what is best, to have somebody create a character for you, and admire or criticize their job, or take the trouble of cooking up your recipe. I don't know. I guess it also has to do with philosophical issues, like falling in love with the beauty of a certain character, but does that mean that you kind of pretend they're real people, even when we know they're not? Do we want or need the DO's to be the prettiest? Why? Prettiest according to who? I am not sure of anything anymore! LOL
What I do know is that I will continue to use DAZ in the foreseeable future. I use it to compose scenes for my oil paintings; the rendering for me is just a means to an end. Quite often my renderings are not even complete; later I fill in the details in the actual painting. But I can pose DAZ characters in ways that are too complicated to ask a real model, so it is quite useful.
I'm going to be watching you in DeviantArt. I love to see 3D art by itself.
@FSMCDesigns
What makes you think Mousso’s characters are “created from morphs she likes?” All her Rendo characters are sculpted in Zbrush. None of her Daz characters need the morph packages so it would seem likely they are also sculpted.
Are you saying that a DO character can’t be done in Zbrush?
This is hysterical. Some people complain that all the female models are TOO pretty and now someone complaining they're not pretty enough! Seriously? There are characters that range from quirky unattractive to drop dead gorgeous and everything in between. And there are several morph packs you can get to design your own perfect girl. Some of these complaints are just ludicrous..
I just wish that all of the promo sets had at least one showing a no makeup option. Half the time I want to tell the model to wash their face so I can see what they look like.
It's this thing. I think they call 'em opinions. Crazy, I know.
Thanks. You have a good point. How else can you make Barbie's look less fantastic plastic. I'll give it a go. And for the record I love 'ugly' Ollie and Edie because I think they are nothing short of gorgeous creatures.
What frustrates me is that outdoor scenes in urban areas it is difficult to get non-bland lighting in. Or any height of day outdoors scene really but not everything is dusk, dawn, or some dramatically lit place in dim light.
Yes, I love them too. But they were meant to be that quirky characature look, not the flagship Victoria. But the truth is, the original Victorias, gen 1,2,3 were more like generic Genesises, without much of a distinctive look to them and not particularly attractive as is, because you were meant to MORPH them. That was the whole point. It wasn't until V5, that Victoria or Stephanie and all the original Daz characters to come had distinct looks. V7 was so ridiculously gorgeous that it was my incentive to learn DS after being a die hard Poser user (and IRay too...)
TBF That's also pretty true in the Real WorldTM
(although I do find as long as its not full midday you can work aout a nice bit of backlighting and get some good drama, although I take more photos of trees than cities. Trees are really good with some backlighting)
