Can't get rid of bright lighting!

Yesterday I downloaded D/S 4.10 and tried some renders.  Oddly, no matter what lights I set up or whether I toggled the little lightbulb in the lighting tab on or off, the lighting was bright, when what I was going for was a moody Halloween render with dim lighting from pumpkins with emissive insides and a dim spotlight.  I used to be able to do things like that, but no matter what I tried the render came out bright as day.

I also tried two totally different scenes without emissive lights but with subtle lighting.  Both came out as if the sun were stuck at noon on a cloudless day.

I tried a single spotlight and also a couple of purchased sets with dim lighting, and I dimmed the lights to almost nothing.

It's not as if I'm a newbie who has never done darkened scenes with dramatic lighting before, but now that I've installed 4.10 I don't know what I'm doing anymore.

What am I doing wrong, please?

Take a look at your camera and render settings - maybe the camera's auto-headlamp is 'On' (I've had the same thing happen to me ;) )

You can set the camera's setting to 'Auto' and the Render Settings to 'Never' or 'When no scene lights' - but note that emissive lights (and Dome lights) don't seem to count as 'Scene lights' - only spot/distant/point

Edit: Camera's setting is near the bottom in the Parameters tab (make sure to check 'All' to see it.  -> Headlamp Mode: Auto

Render Settings - under 'General' look for 'Auto Headlamp' and set to 'Never'

    Then try again.

  • Thanks, Silent Winter!  I'll give that a try.

  • You have set the lighting to Scene only in the Environment tab of Render Settings?

  • Richard, thank you!  That was the one! I had no idea I needed to do that.

  • Ah, yeah - you still had the Dome lighting on (I've done that before too ;) )
