"There are no X (usually girls) on the internet" is an ancient joke about catfishing, I'm guessing everyone gets it.
Umm Ok. But as someone who's been online gaming for decades the only time I ever heard it was when I was gaming. And a not a day went by when at least one douche-canoe didn't say that to me while gaming. I don't recall ever hearing it anywhere else but in-game or on a gaming forum. lol
As someone who had to explain to his mother that random women who would confess their sinful thoughts and ask about penance in Christian AOL chatrooms weren't...actually...women, I strongly sympathize with the idea that no one on the internet is real.
I'm sorry people were dicks to you though.
It's part of the "Rules of the internet" (rule number may vary).
Rule 29: In the internet all girls are men and all kids are undercover FBI agents.
Rule 30: There are no girls on the internet
LOL! I had no idea from the PA name. Thanks for clarifying! I can't seem to keep everyone straight unless they have an obvious name and avatar or are talking about something gender specific (like giving childbirth). I think I've accidentally referred to ShibaShake and Shannon Maier as girls (they're not) and Ignatius Serpent as a guy (wrong again!) I try to avoid using pronouns until I'm sure.
FYI- if anyone hasn't guessed yet, I'm a girl
Shocking, I know!
If someone asked if I were a girl, I would deflect them by saying "You realize GIRL stands for Guy In Real Life, don't you?
Edited to cut it way down, as it's off-topic anyhoo.
I went through this a lot as well, especially back in the earlier years. And then they realized you really were a female behind the female character, and now you had a new "friend".
I’ve started assuming anybody who hasn’t declared themselves as male is female (or NB), partially because my expectations have been totally turned on their head with Daz PAs enough times. And it’s nice to be in a place where that is true, y’know? In the rest of the world it seems like programmers and modelers tend toward male...
now I’m trying to figure out, though, why I thought Shiba was one and not the other.
Yep.
I think Zediccus is a couple, one male, one female (correct me if I'm wrong!) I have no idea about Thorne and Handspan, although I always assumed they were female. I tend to assume that those who create mostly male characters are male and those that create a lot of military stuff, vehicles, sci-fi vehicles or scenes or big architecture/environments like StoneMason and (obviously) Jack Tomalin were male. Not sure about IH Kang who does great female and male clothes.
They should do bios of the PAs here. Mostly what I know of them are from Rendo. I know Ironman13 is female but figure she MUST have help. No one can be that prolific by themselves unless she is truly a genius, which is entirely possible...
Thorne and Handspan are female.
Ironman13 is a couple.
Did she team up with Fugazi or someone else? She was originally alone I'm pretty sure on Rendo, then maybe seems to have joined up with someone or has hired people to work under her and her partner-(-I'm assuming.) She just has soooo much detailed stuff in her products! When she started, she was just doing (great!) poses on Rendo. Then she began doing amazing custom morphs for V4, now she appears to be a major studio! The amount of stuff that comes with her products that often go on steep sales is staggering! It makes feel like a loser that I started before her with all this 3D stuff and she is miles and miles ahead of me in her knowledge of it!
I don't know who her partner is, sorry. I am amazed by the growth as well.
Nothing recently from i13 though. I’ve wondered if something’s up or if she’s been prepping for dForce...
Yeah, I have no idea who is male or female. I thought the names would be some sort of clue. Then, I found out Mec4D was female. So, I thought that maybe men like to design female characters...only sometimes right on that one. Overall, it seems the majority of content designers are female...or at least those that are super prolific. This is only speculation...refer to the first statement. LOL
I'm a guy. And, to be honest, I really thought when I started buying stuff on here that the majority of designers would be male. This is only an expectation because I've grown up with all the mostly male gamers, programmers, IT Techs...etc. It was pretty cool to realize that there are lots of women interested in this hobby / profession as well.
Personally, I think the gender anonymity of PAs is not a bad idea (at least, at first) as it causes them to be considered first as an artist, rather than as a male or female. It causes you to look at their work without any preconceived notions.
On the other hand, I am all for Artist Profiles. I love getting to know all the fine creators on here.
https://www.zed3d.com/about-us/, for anyone who's interested. They are a couple, with a pretty neat story.
I think that, unfortunately, it's better for a PA's gender to be unknown, at least until they've established a reputation. The computer tech fields are dominanted by men, and I know of a number of women who work in these fields who have to really struggle every day against their collegues' gender-based assumptions. And most of these women have Ph.D.s, which you would think would earn them a basic amount of respect. And then there are all the writers who have decided or even been forced (by their publishers) to only use their initials or to choose a gender-neutral name (Joanne Rowling being one of the most famous recent examples).
Edit: Flash sale on Lady Littlefox! I didn't know they started those mid-day.
Same. I figure it helps to balance out the [enter unpleasant name-calling here lol] who ALWAYS make the assumption the other way. lol
Maybe I'm an oddball or just strange but I always thought talent and ability knew no gender but then of course I also belive stupidity, idiocy, ignorance and bias have no bounds or rational
I didn't know there was a bias against female authors. Why?
My own assumption that more men were interested in 3D design work is solely based on the number of men vs. women that I've known working with computer tech as a career, or who seem to be really interested in gaming...etc. I have no doubt that anyone -male or female- interested in doing the work can be good at it if they have the desire and talent. There is certainly an abundance of evidence to support that conclusion on Daz. I was just surprised to find out that so many of the PAs on here are women. They have certainly garnered my support in the ultimate way. I buy a lot of their products. :) My wallet tries to hide everytime Sickleyield or Mec4D put out a new product.
I don't know if SWAM or Goldtassel are male or female. But, I think I might have paid more than a few house payments for them over the past couple of years. :)
People are just more inclined to take male authors seriously. It's cultural. {The common belief is....} Women authors write romance and boring stuff about chicks. Men write exciting adventures. You'll find plenty of women who say they prefer male authors, but not very many men who prefer female authors. And reviewers who don't try to offset bias tend to pick more men's names than women's names to review.
Andre Norton, C.J. Cherryh, James Tiptree Jr., the Bronte sisters, George Sand.... Many, many women writers use male or ambiguous names. Especially in science fiction, mysteries, etc. For so long, men will not read a book written by a woman, but women will read books written by men. Is a basic cultural thing. It's becoming a bit less common.
The site has apparently been down; I was just now able to reach it,...
J K Rowling was advised by her publisher to use 2 gender ambigous initials rather than her first name Joanne, probably because the Harry Potter books were considered at the time to mostly appeal to young boys. I wonder if she would have become the same huge success if she had indeed published under a female name.
Yes, the site has been down, and it keeps signing me in and out, and the pages are really laggy. I am checking out before the stupid thing messes up again.
Her publisher probably did her a big favor. I'm doubting she would have been as widely read initially. (Perhaps I am pessimistic.) Just glancing through my collections in only a page or two, I see even more: C.S. Friedman, W.R. Gingell, C.J. Brightley, M. Terry Green, D.K. Holmberg, R. A. MacAvoy, E.D. Baker. T. Kingfisher, ... and so on... all but two, R.A.MacAvoy and C.S. Friedman, are younger women writers. So the trend continues...
I'm afraid to check out while it's having this many issues! It's taken about 20 minutes to even get this message to post.
Down here a bunch also. Hope you manage to check out!
Seem to be a lot of items that should be back in mfg sale as part of PA FInal Weekend that are only showing 40%. Appear to be items that are in specific PA catalogue sales but I'm sure some were in mfg during the sale period....
