Here she is rendered in 3Delight, converted to DZ Default surface, no extra colors, no fancy shaders, white lights, you be the judge.
I know they don't look it in most renders of her, but I doubt they'd go back to non-photoreal textures. If she's anything like V8, they're photoreal. The G8 line doesn't play well with default lighting and render settings - making the skin look flat and lifeless, imo. This gen, more than previous gens, seems to require more thought into lighting and render settings to make the skins look good (kind of like real people, I suppose).
Photoreal also depends on your settings as well. You have to have the right lighting and render settings.
..OK so installed the default pose script, worked like a charm, still need to do a little adjustment when using a G3 pose but pretty minor.
Brow remover worked well, however I keep getting the following error when using Real Eyebrows
So looks like I'm stuck with the painted on eyebrows or have to cough up the 18$ for the Super Natural Merchant Resoruce. Bugger, I was afraid this was going to bust my budget.
No you don't. Load a Real Eyebrows figure on its own, not with your G8 selected. Select the eyebrows, go to Edit>Scene Identification, change Preferred Base to G8F. Now fit normally.
EDIT: It reallllly looks like the "shaping" is applying a transmap, so if that script is broken I imagine it could still be done manually.
EDIT AGAIN: Nope, it's hiding geometry.
Okay, I bought the package and it's doing this all by hiding geometry. Very interesting. Very weird. Kinda cool.
So if you want to use it on G8F:
Load the file from the DUFs folder. (Yes, the one that says "Don't use this file.") There's your ugly base eyebrows. In the scene tab dropdown menu, do Edit>Scene Identification and change Preferred Base to G8F. Now fit to G8F. I would save this as a G8F eyebrow into the same folder to avoid doing this a whole bunch of times.
Now. Right click on one of the "Real Eyebrows Shape Presetxx" files, and choose Browse To File Location. In the folder, copy all the "Real Eyebrows Shape Presetxx" files and paste them. Rename them from "Copy" to "G8F" or whatever fits your style.
The reason they don't work on G8F is they are looking for a G3F node. I think this is to autoload brows. Open the copied files in a script editor of your choice (notepad works fine). Find and replace "Genesis3Female" with "Genesis8Female" exactly. It occurs once per script.
Now the shaping presets will work when you have the brow loaded. If you want autoload to work right when you don't have a brow loaded you can change the DUF path at the beginning of the files to your saved G8F DUF.
Can't fix the eyebrow shaping tool because it's encrypted.
Hmm..yes, I would say photoreal with a brown tint overlay.
I unfortunately don't like generation 8 expressions, but I find Stephanie 8 has a lot of charm, especially Fisty's version with 25% Josie, and her probably slighty modified face on Whitney hair promo renders.
Would LOVE to have her as a generation 7 character !
It's not just you. They do look horrible.
the skins on all of them look dreadful.
Can’t keep anyone happy these days can we, everyone is always so ungrateful, show some appreciation for once
Why? What am I showing "appreciation" for? Why am I being "ungrateful" for something that I am paying for? If they were free, then I can understand "showing appreciation" or "being grateful". But they're not. They're expensive products that have skins that are nowhere near as good as the skins on the G7 line.
I like V8's skin. I don't have any of the other "8" figures though. They just don't look so good with the default render settings.
Here's V8 with the default render settings:
And here she is with some adjustments to the render settings:
Her skin is, imo, much nicer with some adjustments to Tone Mapping and Filtering.
But I agree, a lot of people don't want to go through that trouble of making the adjustments and want it to look great "out of the box" with the default settings. And in that regard, the official Daz Original character Genesis 8 skins are kind of a "step backwards" as the G3 skins tend to look better with the default settings.
Again though, I like V8's skin. :)
V8 is the only G8 character so far that has half-decent skin....the rest of them have that orange spray tan look. ALL of them look flat and featureless. First thing I do with my G8 characters (assuming I'm doing an image and not testing something) is adjust the shaders.

I think what gets some (my) hackles up is just dismissing it out of hand without any sort of specific critique "Its horrible" well thats just, like, your opinion man...
Personally, its not even that I find "this is terrible" is mean or rude... Its useless, what useful discussion is it going to engender? all you're going to get is a string of "yes it is!" "no its not!"
on the other hand "the default has the translucence up way to high and it looks way too dark compared to the actual textures and takes longer to render" or "the new eye geometry setup means all my old textures get harsh lines around the iris which makes them pretty much unusable" still complaints, but with some actual meat for discussion and hopefully solutions (for the translucence use the supplied translucence strength medium or low sitting right in the same folder as the character, my god, one of these should have been the default instead)
Really? Oh wow, that's ...weird. I wonder what the thinking was behind that change in the skins? I've seen quite a few people complaining about how they don't like the DO "8" line's skins. They're going to need to make some changes and realize the coustomers aren't happy with the direction they're going with the new skin textures.
I think I mentioned a couple times how I don't care for the chromatic SSS, but I guess there's a reason they're using it. It's probably more accurate in the physical sense, but it doesn't translate well to my eyes. LOL. Olympia is probably the worst one...for one, the translucency for the G8 skins is super high and I think it's letting too much light thru and showing that weird orange transmission tint. I always turn the translucency way back and set the SSS back to mono, whether it's most accurate or not. I'm more concerned with how it looks, not how physically accurate it may be. ;) I'm perfectly capable of "faking it 'til I make it" LOL

I've stated those before - the translucence and the eyes and eyebrows, but I didn't feel like saying them again. And I want to note, I'm referring to the base iconic figures here, NOT G8 characters made by vendors. I have two G8 characters that were made by different vendors and I'm very happy with them - the skins are quite lovely and VERY well done and don't require much changing (if at all) on them both. Translucence is correct on both of them - not so massively high that it's ridiculous.
But seriously, I find the Daz supplied material setting for G8 provided you use the included Translucency strength preset is a signifigant improvement over G7. Which I think people are forgetting also darkens the skin weirdly, and doesnt backlight well, (and before the 4.9 update the entire figure would glow red when strongly backlit)
(also the G7s baked the dark red translucence color into the makeup maps and it was the worst thing ever if you liked using a different translucence color than the awful default dark red and ever planned on using any of the makeups)
The translucence is the easiest fix ever though... daz literally supply's a preset to lower the translucence. Its one click... right there in the same folder
Because I am nothing if not exacting... Comparison Time! TBF I should've done Steph, but this has gotten more general so...
V7 vs V8 vs V8 with the translucency medium preset (which sets the translucence to .5)
Some notes:
...actually I rarely ever use a default skin even on older genesis figures with all the vendor resrouces I have.
Vicky 8 IS the most decent skin of the bunch so far. Olympia looks, well, like she's been taking too much tetracycline...lol.
I do prefer the cast of V8's skin over V7s...maybe because even though I'm very fair (from the German side of the family), I also have olive skin (from the Italian side). So, I'm a shade yellowish like Vicky 8 ;) The beige looks a bit unnatural, though I'm sure there are people with that skin tone.
Laurie
I'm gonna disagree with some of you.. I think Josie's skin is the best out of the box, I don't feel like I need to do any adjustment to it and it looks fantastic. But again, Thorne made it, and Thorne is a Goddess.
LOL...the one I haven't used yet ;).
Laurie
Kind of like Sherwin-Williams 'eggshell' texture paint called 'Folksy Gold'.
The thing is, people want it that way out of the box, as it were. To each his own, though, since I think they look fine as they load in.
No, they aren't. These things that people complain about are artistic choices the people that are doing the DO figures are making. As stated above, there is a more translucent shader option (several of them, in fact) provided for you to choose from. There is a fix for the eyes mentioned in another thread here, and I think folks have mentioned more than once how to deal with the lip shape if you don't like it.
She looks amazing here, lovely work. Is that a Dforce dress?
Thanks, this is what I was looking for. Stephanie 8 seems more ethnicaly ambiguous than her previous generations and some of the other mainstay characters.
