An easier way of adjusting light geometry in Iray

I've been reworking some older sets for better looks (in my opinion) by taking light props and usually the bulb or glass is a texture, so I apply a glass shader (removing the texture) then create a point light inside and change the geometry to cylinder (for say a long florescent bulb)

The problem is, then you need to change the Width and Height in the new settinngs that show up using the geometry and you can't see the size, shape and position of the light until render time. Which means guessing at the values, render, make adjustments, rerender and repeat until it's correct.

Why can't the geometry shape follow the perameters x,y,z,rotation and scaling so the shape follows the bounding box like one would expect?

  • Seconded — this would make it a lot easier to use light geometry effectively.

Yes, this would make life so much easier.

I had never even known the light geometry was in the settings before. It was when one person had mentioned how they always rework headlights on cars so they look more real so I started experimenting with different products and found the light geometry setting. Once I got the first prop set with the geometry correctly, I was really impressed at how much better it looked.

  • You could put in an enhancement request to have a wireframe representation in the viewport.
