New Stuff Not Showing in Smart Content or Database

Ever since I upgraded to the current build of DAZ Studio, new content, either added by myself via saving poses/shapes or added via installers, do not show up in Smart Content, nor are they recognized by the database in general. In fact, I can't do anything data-base related with them even if I access the DB editor via the content library. I can be right in the Aiko 5 poses folder, select Content DB Editor, and it will act like the folder is empty.

Is there something I can do about this other than waiting for the next update and hoping it works properly then?

It sounds as if the CMS is not running - do you have any entries under Categories or Products, even empty folders, in the Content Library pane? Which OS are you using?

I have absolutely everything I installed prior to upgrading to the latest version, and I am using Windows 7. I can find everything in the Content Library in their appropriate folders and everything I categorized before the upgrade is still properly categorized. I just can't seem to add anything new or make changes.

Just had the same problem this weekend and posted a question as well, but only got one response. I wish I could tell you a magic fix, but I ended up reinstalling DAZ Studio and Content Manager. Still haven't finished reorganizing my database. If I get the problem again and/or figure out a solution, I will let you know. Hopefully, you will not need to wait if someone has the answer now.

I have a similar problem. I am using ds4.5 pro wih windows 7 64 bit. I can see the content in the smart tab, but when I click on the content nothing happens. I have to go to the content folders and find the items there in order to add them to my scenes. Needless to say, I use the search function a lot.

Having the same problem here too. Help us Obi Wan!

Okay, it sounds like there are several different problems people are having.

If you have some Smart Content and Categories but can't add anything new, that sounds like database corruption. In DS4.5 you can export User Data to save your existing custom categories, then reset the database and reimport them.

If you have Smart Content but can't load anything from it, that could mean your content folders aren't defined correctly. If you go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, expand the "DS format" and "Poser format" sections, and post a screen shot, we can try to sort out the problem.

Unfortunately, exporting the user data, resetting and importing didn't solve the problem for me. I went through the process and the end result is being back where I was before, except with the knowledge of being able to cross one possible solution off the list (for me, at least). That's still progress, of course, and I thank you for the assistance, but there's still something screwy going on.

Okay, I just tried my smart tab again. When I left click on the icon I get nothing. This time I also right clicked on the icon and found the sub-menu. If I click on merge with scene or add new I do get the content loaded. Is this how it is supposed to be done? Or should it also load by just clicking the icon?

Double-click should also work. What's the item?

It doesn't matter which item. It is this way for all items. I'm happy to know I have the right click option available. So don't worry too much about my issue. Thanks.

Does it work if you have nothing selected in the scene when you double-click? Go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library and see what it says under "Replacement Management".

I don't know what happened. But now it works fine. I can even double click and it works.

and this is what it says under Replacement Management in case this helps others

ask to replace, only when items have matching Content Type

anyhow I am solved, thanks for taking your time to look into my issue

Meanwhile, the solution to my issue remains elusive. I'm mostly hoping the next general update resolves it, but I'd welcome suggestions for possible solutions.

I would try uninstalling CMS, deleting the databases (making sure there aren't extra database files in ProgramData), then reinstalling DS to make sure you have the current CMS, then re-import metadata.

I'm confused about uninstalling CMS being its own separate step. When updating DS, it said it was removing previous versions first. This does not include the CMS?

That's right. Since both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of DS4 use the same CMS, CMS doesn't get uninstalled when you update DS4. There's an uninstall link for CMS along with the Start CMS and Stop CMS links in" Start > Programs > DAZ 3D > DAZ Content Management Service".

Ooh, that DOES sound like a probable explanation, particularly since this issue began right after a DS upgrade. Thank you. It might be a couple days before I have time to try it, but I'll be sure to post my results.

Actually, I need more information, please. How do I go about deleting the database? I assume it is not the same as resetting it and the documentation center is proving unhelpful.

In Windows, this is what I do:

    1. Content DB Maintenance>Export User Data to save any user created metadata
    2. Stop the DAZ Content Management Service
    3. Go to C:\ProgramData\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service
    a. Copy folder "databases" in case you want to restore
    b. Delete all files in folder "databases"
    3. Restart the DAZ Content Management Service

From this point, Content DB Maintenance>Re-import Metadata..

I've had to resort to this when new metadata wasn't getting added and Content DB Maintenance>Reset Database and re-importing still ignored the new content that wasn't getting added.

edit: Last sentence changed: ignored to still ignored

How do you Export User Data? Don't understand except step 1. Am I to go to the Content Maintenance folder and make a COPY of it? How do I save that?

I have the same issue where as all my NEW content doesn't show up in the Smart Cont folder. I see all my previous downloads but not the new stuff.

I don't see a "Databases" folder isn't in Content Management Service.

How do I restart the Content Management Service.

Okay, WOW. I was wrong about it being fixed. When I started up DAZ Studio again, the newly constructed database was gone. I'll try the more thorough reinstall approach, but... wow.

How do I restart the Content Management Service.

To export user data use the Content DB Maintence>Export User Data. It's displayed in the little Pane Options icon on the Smart Content "bar".. looks like a white page icon with an triangle arrow on it. The Re-Import Metadata command is there too.

My path to the databases folder is: C:\ProgramData\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service
Note the folder is ProgramData, not Programs Files

There is a Start and Stop icons in your Start Menu>All Programs>DAZ 3D>DAZ Content Management Service

    Hope that helps!

Edit: A file UserData_1.dsx will be created in Runtime\Support. When you run Re-Import Metadata command, their is a check box that will be enabled to re-import your user metadata.

Yes, deleting the database files would result in an empty Smart Content.

    Be sure to:

    1. RESTART the DAZ Content Manager Service
    2. Execute the Content DB Command>Re-Import Meta command to re-populate the database.

    OK...
So I just exported the user data. (the pictured helped a lot)
Then...I hit Stop Running The Content Management. (that's done)

    Now....

You say 3. Go to C:\ProgramData (it's *ProgramFiles* for me)\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service
    a. Copy folder "databases" in case you want to restore
    b. Delete all files in folder "databases"

Well... I am there but there is no folder that says "databases"

    NOW WHAT?

That's not what I meant. I did exactly that, and everything seemed fine. Smart Content mostly restored, able to adjust categories again, etc. Then I closed the program, came back to it later, and all the smart content was gone again. Not only that, but the problems with category adjusting was back in full swing.

I looked on a Windows 7 system and it appears C:\ProgramData is a "hidden" folder. You may need to enable "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" in Folder Options>View tab. If you don't know where that is, go to Start Menu>Help and Support and search for show hidden files for a link to it.

edit: see picture which shows what to enable on a Windows 7 system:
