Tire Rubber Shader

Does anyone know if there is a tire shader that will keep the original textures?  I have old vehicles that the tires render like slicks and would like to have them render properly.

To use a shader while keeping the original textures just hold down control and double click on the shader, when the pop-up comes up, under "Images" tell it to "Ignore". That should keep the original textures while applying the shader settings to them.

If you're rendering in Iray, Daz has some good Iray shaders included. A decent one for tires is "Rubber - Matte". Just be sure and hold down Control when you double click it and tell it to Ignore images. :)

...also before converting go to the surfaces tab and make sure the lighting type for the tyres is set to "Matte". This does make a difference as it affects the Iray glossiess factor.

It didn't work for the WW2 Jeep, but it did work for the Roadstar.

The jeep uses a Displacement map for the tyre tread, the Roadstar uses a Bump map. The displacement transfer does not work very well and I've not managed to get a decent result after a few minutes of playing but you can put the displacement map 'jeepB3.jpg' in the Bump channel of the converted Iray shader, increase the Base Bump value (I used 10 in the attached image) and I set the Displacement to image to 'None' otherwise I get some distortion of the tyre.

You'll really need to play with the settings to get a result you like, and it depends on lighting, image size etc to get something you are happy with, hope this helps.

I managed to get decent results from the tyres on the jeep by using two figures - one for the wheels, using the Geoemtry Tool to select and delete everything else, and one for the rest of the model, just selecting and hiding the wheel bones. That way I could turn the Displacement Sub-division setting up enough without overloading memory.

Another option might be to convert the bump and displacement to Normals.

All of my vehicles have modeled tire treads and a few sets have spare tire props included. I can check later as I'm typing this on my phone.

Mec4D shaders has rubber; PBS shaders 2.

When you apply the shader, hold down CTRL and keep the original textures in the dialogue that appears.
