sad day

I was a bit late moving up to iray and genesis 3- V7 ( just last April) and have invested rater heavily in it. Just as i was actually getting somewhere, Behold! Victoria 8! While i expected it, its depressing. it's like starting a render, and it's going beautifully and when it's almost complete.... the computer or program crashes, and you forgot to save the scene that took hours to make, and now you have to start all over again. i can't re-invest in all the toys all over again like i have with g2 and g3. I can't afford it. just feeling left behind and tired. i hope it works for them, but I think I'll just quit this hobby for a while. I spend too much time and money on it anyway. Forgive the self-pity party, but loyalty has it's limits, financial and emotional.

I totally agree it is really getting out of hand a I said in another post G1/G2/G3 have barely been able to have their full potential realized and something new arrives.. From reading some of the other posts it seems that the release of G8 has become a devisive issue.. And that some are probably getting fed up with it all..
Nothing is being taken away. Something new is being added to what we already have. I still use Generation 3 and 4 all the time. I have a V4 and M4 on one of my book covers. My next one will have a G2M wearing M4 clothes, because that's the way he wants to be. So yes, something has changed, but it's not a bad thing. We just have some more options. I'm sure there will still be content for Genesis 3 both here and at many other 3D stores.
This is just my feeling as a consumer, Genesis 3 is the the bankable sales chasis and will remain so for some time yet. I wouldn't fret. You'll continue to see Genesis 3 based characters and clothing being released for some time to come.
So keep using Genesis 3. There's tons of old content available, and quite often there are sales that go deeper the older the content is. Now Genesis 3 content can enjoy that bonus.
I'm still using Genesis 2 mostly, and now I get the deeper discounts.
I understand how you're feeling. I bought into G2 heavily just before G3 dropped. I was hoping so much that G8 was a few months off yet, and I'm still trying to figure out if I just jump in and run, or hold off investing like I did with G3.
But as I keep telling myself as well, previous generations don't stop working just because the new shiny is out. Enjoy your purchased content today the same as you were enjoying it yesterday.
Don't be sad. You have not lost your work. You can continue with what you have. I just got decent teeth for Genesis 3 this month (so I could open her mouth without her looking like a horse or a goon), and now here comes Victoria 8 smiling like she knows a secret on lots of promos! Well, I've already cast my blockbuster with Genesis 3, and I've started production. I will just use Gen8 where I can, and if the expressions are really that much better, then I'll have to make some changes. But the show must go on. Take a break. Have some ice cream. And start playing again. You don't have to be state-of-the-art to be avant garde.
We will see the thing is you look on those other sites and the amount of content for G1 and G2 has pretty much dried up as G3 gathered momentum.. And as it is now you either see content for V4 or G3 nothing of the others, the reason there is still content being made for V4 is for those people who use Poser, Carrara and so on even though G1 and G2 can be used in Poser they are not as friendly to use as V4.. And those who use Carrara can only go as far as G2 since G3 does not play nice..
I still use V4, M4 and Genesis as my main figures for rendering. I have invested very little in the Genesis 2 Females, have purchased some anime and toon stuff for the genesis 2 males. I don't feel like I am mising out on absolutely anything. I have not seen any huge improvements to the technology. The only thing I use Genesis 3 for is for beta testing. I'm just not impressed by Genesis 2 3 or 8. The fact that after Genesis 1 they split the bases up, which to me was a huge step backwards, I've just not been attracted to the Genesis 3 product line and it looks to be the same for 8.
I don't think you can do G8 clothes on G3. Backward compatiibliy is using old content on new. Unless there is an update to the G3 essentials, there wouldn't be a g8 clone to convert clothing.
A couple of days ago I saw a thread here that mentioned V8, Genesis 8... I'll admit that I didn't read it extremely carefully, but I thought the final verdict was that it was a misunderstanding.
Okay...
I stand by my statement... Seriously Genesis 8?
I'm really bad at math, especially new math, but I was under the impression it went 1... 2... 3... Q... 4... 5... 6... Triangle... 7... And then 8.
Fancy that.
Well, I'm glad I held off on the last Genesis figures, or this would have totally pissed me off.
Whatever.
Nobody is losing anything. Nothing is being taken away. You can continue to use the previous generation figures and assets right alongside the Genesis 8 figures and assets. They are not being made irrelevant in any way whatsoever. You just have a new option and some fresh characters to play with. You dont have to purchase any Genesis 8 items if you dont want to or you can purchase them all if you want to. Its totally up to you.
I don't understand why we need Victoria 8. All it does is create more confusion. Will this skin work with this character? Will these shoes work with theis morph? Will this texture work with Firefly? Will this figure work with Poser? Will these lights work with iRay? There comes a tipping point where the effort is not worth it anymore. There are already shoes in the store for V8 that look like exact replicas of shoes for V7. Like, what's the point of all this?
The Almighty Dollar/Pound/Euro/Yen, etc.
The items I tested did not lose their morphing options. I tested the MFD for Genesis, MFD for G3F, Shield Maiden for Genesis, and Time for School for G3F.
Yes, we ARE losing something. It's quite historically demonstrable that when a new Generation debuts, the amount of content produced for the prior generations RAPIDLY declines. So if you invested heavily in Gensis2, when Genesis3 came out, the development of Genesis2 clothes, hair, characters, etc., all dropped off pretty quickly for the 'new shiny'. This has happened with EVERY Generation.
You say we aren't losing anything? Then we'll still see new products for our old stuff at the same rate as when it was new? I don't think so.....
You lose out when the focus of new content is on the newest figure.
You lose out when content is splintered between more figures and you don't get to mix figures as much (or, with geograft, at all)
It's going to be a long time before I even consider moving up to V8. It took a whole year before I switched from V6/M6 to Genesis 3. The selling points don't exist yet: muscularity morphs, vascularity morphs, and a whole slew of body shaping systems that make Genesis 3 pop. The HD addon doesn't exist yet, but that's probably on its way. And, of course, there isn't a Skin Builder 4. I use AJ's Blood Vessels (NLA) for SSS maps in Iray and Topcoats in Reality, and AJ never made a G4F set for obvious reasons. I'd lose those completely, and they help give my characters natural blotchy skin.
I use recurring custom characters, and based on the shape of V8's face compared to V6 and V7, I don't think I can convert them and have them still look the same. Oh, sure, I could just convert the V8 mesh to V7 and the switch would be seamless, but if I'm going to do that, I'll just stick with V7.
So at the moment, Genesis 4 ... I mean, Genesis 8 -- come on guys! I'm mathematically challenged and you just imploded my brain! -- doesn't offer a thing that I need.
Yeh but eventually PA's run out of things to create for G3. It's all been done before (I imagine sales for G3 products has been decreasing simply due to redundancy).
Same with gaming systems (xbox, ps4, etc). They're marginally backward compatible, but more importantly, they upgrade the underlying technology and give vendors a chance to release new games for pre-existing concepts.
It would be great if tech upgrades were always 100% backward compatible but that's never the case with anything (computers, cars, houses, etc.). For me, it comes down to the renders. Once I see a G8 render that amazes me (perhaps something not possible with G3 tech), I'll be much more inclined to make the purchase, and consequently I'll be happy Daz upgraded the base figure.
my reaction is just an emotional response. I understand business is business, and you either advance or stagnate. that being said, it feels as though all of my characters, poses and morphs, have all been told they have a terminal illness, and only have a month to live. new g3 content will slowly fade away into obsolesence. it is disheartening, like losing a close friend.. i don't mean to upset anyone or offend; just not good at goodbyes is all.
Did you try adjusting those morphs? I just read somebody did this, and while the morphs showed up, they did not actually do anything.
And that is a problem. I'm still using G2 and G3 models, and these models can't use any of the G8 stuff without some serious work. Obviously, only G8 can wear G8 clothes, so I would need to convert my whole library to G8 take make it all "compatible." That is not my idea of a fun time.
It's only a sad day if you care..
Until someone comes up with a transfer tool
At least this time they didn't throw in a mess of deal-breakers. This looks like the smoothest transition we've had since genesis to G2.
We'll need a pose converter, and Zev0 and another vendor are onto that. But I don't see anything about their having dumped dual quaternion rigging. And I don't see anything about additional polys (although there may be some) and the new base pose will probably take some getting used to. But the poses in the promos look extremely good, and the expressions look much better than the last lot (which were already an improvement).
We will end up needing to start over with morphs, but we always have to start over with morphs. It's porting the old morphs to new figures which is going to introduce a hitch in the getalong, since we recently lost the vendor who specialized in that.
And this time an easy 90+% of the skins we already have will work.
Let me see if I understand this correctly... you don't like the new generation because you need to spend money, but you are worried that content will dry up for the older generation so you won't be able to spend money. Did I get that correct?
Yes, the new content for the old generation drops off, but the catalogs don't dissappear, and nothing stops working. So unless you have bought --everything-- for Genesis 3 already you will probably have the oppertunity to buy what you don't have at ever cheaper prices. Yes the newest skimpware will not work on Vicky7, but how much skimpwear did you need? I really wouldn't sweat it too much.
I still use all the Generations of Genesis a lot for different purposes and different reasons, I'm not sure if I am going to hop right onboard with this one, I'm still thinking about it, but that pupeteer for facial expressions is really tempting. But even if I don't I can go forever on what I already have. I really don't get the animousity to the new figure. Use it or don't use it, you will not be falling behind if you aren't using the newest version of the pretty girl.
For me, I have no real urge to buy Vicky 8. I will be loading up on Gen 2 and Gen 3 goodies, however. I do mainly ebook covers and some artwork for graphic novels so I don't need all of the fancy things that will come with Vicky 8, at least not for the foreseeable future. As soon as the prices for the prior generation of content drops, I'm planning on buyng a ton of that, and I'm learning how to combine fiddly bits from different pieces of content to create what I need. Besides, and I suppose this will sound bad but Vicky 8 just doesn't look pretty or really sexy to me, like Vicky 7 does. In time, I might not not for quite some time. I need to save for a new rig, and that's far more important than converting over to Gen 8.

Fresh paid content specific to the previous generation of digital figures (both here and on other stores) drops off dramatically once the new generation is introduced, for whatever reason(s). Freebies are a different matter since profit isn't the motivating factor - Ghastly still makes and releases clothing for Genesis 1, for example. But most freebies will start to focus on the current generation after a few months, too.
I think of it more like Genesis 3.5 than Genesis 8. I am pleased with their approach to it. My focus has been trying to get old content to work with the newest content and have spent quite a bit of money in doing that. Now with Genesis 8 much of the money I spent on moving old content to new content won't be needed to be spent again moving to Genesis 8. And the other technical improvements are worth ir sort of built in dynamics.
If the Morphs are actual morps, they work (I did just test it with the G3 MFD). If the "Morphs" were actually pose controllers (which move bones in the skirt/hair/etc, often invisible ones) then yes, they're broken. There's a work around, but I don't remember what it is at the moment (something to do with transfering skeletons using the rigging tools) as I haven't used it in a while.
I like to look to the positive, and I want DAZ and the vendors to all be making plenty of sales to continue along profitably. I am trying to look at G8 in that light, and understand the value of incremental improvements to the technology (even though what I've seen so far seems to be smaller increments than previous advances). So as a consumer wanting a business to do what it needs to to refresh itself and remain viable, I understand.
However, I will also express some frustration as an artist, in this respect: One feature of a maturing product line is that the products released for it have to work harder and be more creative to find fertile ground, and in my view we have in recent months indeed seen some truly excellent new releases for Genesis 3. Just a few stellar examples: Aeon Soul's recent Whymsy, daeyabbo's DeadBlade, the well-supported Centaur, Josh Crocket's the Fallen One, Saiyaness's Dale, among plenty of others - these gave me a feeling like "yes... we are really getting to the good stuff." Really creative, really unique entries. The main DazO figures, while not quite to the degree I would like, also stretched a little, giving some examples of older or more nuanced characters. Of course none of these are going away. But now the vendors, as they fully should, and I do not begrudge them in the least, will race to be the first to claim the ground necessary to round out the new figure. We need a mermaid, we need a blue skin, we need a scaly skin, we need veins, we need belly morphs, we need tattoos, we need ponytails, we need undergarments (we always need plenty of undergarments), we need a bard costume, we need hand poses, we really, really need dresses and shoes that don't look wrinkled.
None of what we have goes away, but the spotlight naturally shifts. The press to conquer unexplored territory in a mature field will be replaced by the necessity of filling in the obvious gaps. And many of the recent products that I have wishlisted are now a generation behind... so does the risk taken by the artist in making that really unique product get the reward it otherwise would have, if given the chance to remain "current-gen" a little longer, or will it be marked as a poor seller, less likely to be explored further? And when that really striking, must-have product comes out for Genesis 8, well then of course I'll have to buy the good old head and body morph bundle again for the 4th time :)
