Is G2 dead?

I've practically skipped over Genesis 2 entirely.  Although I have Genesis 3 and may eventually start using M7/V7, my go-to figure is still Genesis 1, mainly because of the convenient two-genders-in-one-mesh-model.  I was eager for transgender morphing capabilities even back in the days of M4/V4, which is why I was among the earliest adopters of P3dxjim's Vittorio and M4 Enhanced morph packs.  I was so pleased when Daz finally seemed to get the memo and combined both genders into one base with Genesis 1, and their decision to undo that in subsequent generations remains the single greatest disappointment for me in the 3D content department.  It has been explained to me why they went that route, but knowing the reason doesn't really make it any less annoying.  I actually managed to fashion an unofficial transgender version of Genesis 2, but it looks like that's going to be impossible with Genesis 3 because the chest areas of the male and female have different numbers of polygons.  That makes sense, of course,  but again, knowing the logic behind it doesn't really make it any less annoying.  The mesh of Genesis 1's chest seemed to handle both shapes just fine, after all.

Different interactive poses would be nice

Well, I just want to add that I would PAY for G2 stuff especially various poses and facial morphs.

I believe there is a product that will convert G3 poses to G2 poses but it's slim pickings in G3 too. There are also products that will convert poses for older than G2 to G2. I think M4/V4 have the most interactive poses available followed by Genesis.

Hopefully someone will come along that knows the name of those products as I don't. I know in the Freebies section is a thread with a script that will convert all older DAZ poses to Genesis, Genesis 2, Genesis 3, ...forward in model version...your choice but not backwards in model version from eg Genesis 3 to Genesis 2. That script is sold in the DAZ Store.

Yes, if I can convert G3 poses to work with G2, that would make my day

anyone got a link for it?

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/137491/converting-g3-poses-to-g2-it-works/p1

I believe the script is somewhere in these threads. And it actually works ;).

And here's a link to a script that will take from V3 up to Genesis 3 - http://www.sharecg.com/v/76667/browse/8/Script/Updated-Daz-Studio-Posing-Scripts-now-for-G3F

WOW,and here I am still using Genesis 1. I really need to get caught up and at least buy the G2 and G3 basic bundles before G4 hits.

Based on the recent sales where they are putting deep discounts on Genesis 3 female stuff, I am assuming Genesis 4 is going to drop any day now.

I use G2 almost exclusively for everything I tried to get into G3 but with the problems that I had with G3 not able to handle symmetry mode in Sculptris, I stayed with G2 and it has not let me down, also converting V4 content to G2 is a snap and not overly painful..

The other thing I found interesting in looking at what was made for both G2 and G3 in the short time G3 has been around the amount of content made for it has far surpassed what was made for G2..  I have bought some G3 stuff mainly clothing and hair and only started doing that because of the G3 to G2 Autofit clone..  Other than that I have pretty much skipped G3 altogether as well I have so much stuff from previous generations I felt no real need to go all out on a new generation that and I am not rolling in money.. lol

I digged up G2F recentley. It was a short rendez vous after I've noticed how bad her limbs are bending compared with G3. I'm so spoiled with G3. Looking foreward to G4 now.

if it does My Wallet sincerely hopes it's totally  incompatible and unexportable/fixeable  with everything but DAZ studio, cannot use poses or clothes from previous generations and certainly not skin textures!!

Then I can seriously start saving for my retirement instead of padding DAZ 3 D's pockets.

I'm still here mostly using G2. I don't usually need a lot of content though, and I like to tinker with stuff I already have. Mostly because I'm near broke.

My sense is that there's less available in terms of G2F hair, characters and expressions... and that G3 is a more-detailed mesh, esp. the head.

more detailed on the head; less poly-count overall.

So if G2 is dead, does that make those of us who still primarily use G1 necromancers?

PA-wise, yes, very much so. And G3 is about to follow suit come next month, if pattern holds true.

    Let's hope not!

It's amazing to hear of everyones experiences and preferences concerning G2 and other figures. So many concerns that other users have overcome and vice versa. Just goes to show everyone has different needs.

    Indeed
it is my opinion that, without improvements to the Daz studio software itself, G4 will be just another marketing gimmick.

Any major upgrades to the figure itself such as implicit skinning,or spline based Dynamic hair
or soft body dynamics ,will require major recoding of Daz studio 5.

Addtionally such improvement to G4 will likely break compatibility with all existing conformers.
I personally plan to stay withG1- G2 for the forseeable future as I am an animator and content creator of both conforming and Dynamic clothing.

I wonder how modular the core non-plugin portions of DAZ Studio is? They have plenty of plug-ins so I know they know how to design and code like that. I think maybe it's less daunting for them to add these new dynamic features and such then we think, especially if some universities and business release their IR&D as open standards. Maybe they are waiting for the HW to catchup?

There is usually around of month of 'grace time', in terms of new products. After that, stuff generally gets focused on the successor generation of character figure. Sometimes something has reverse compatibility, which is always desirable.

Genesis 2 still has more use than most do, due to some Iray materials having been released for a few of the characters (though, sadly, for none of its creatures). If it weren't for most renders now being done in Iray, Genesis would also still have plenty of uses, but when you put something designed for 3Delight in an Iray environment or right next to another Iray figure (or have them carrying Iray props), the difference can be glaring. Not always, but frequently.

Fro that reason, I expect Genesis 3 to have a longer life, unless there is yet another change of rendering engine coming up.

Don't forget the 10% off Gift Cards offer from today. DAZ frequently puts gift cards on sale the week before a new figure is released... So I'm thinking Victoria 8 will be released next Tuesday. But I'm one of the crowd that doesn't want to see a new generation yet and won't be buying into it.

As for G2... G2 was the current generation when I got started with DS. I signed up for PC+ membership as the PA Festival was winding down and was thrust into the PC Anniversary sale with no real understanding of what I was doing. I spent an insane amount of money on V4 and M4 products, mostly with 80% discounts, because I also had bought the Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female and Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male products and had the naive idea all that old content would work perfectly on G2. (Not to malign the products. I've just since learned that these tools are a good starting point, not the end result...) I found G2 much easier to work with than generation 4, in all respects. I didn't totally skip G1, but I don't use it nearly as much. Now I use G3 more than G2, but I still use G2 quite a lot.

In one way, I'm looking forward to Genesis 4 coming out... products I've wanted, but were too expensive for my budget, will start getting the deeper discounts. And I'll have more money to buy the higher priced sets, (but worth every penny,) from such excellent PAs as Stonemason and SloshWerks. (Did you see the bathroom Slosh released today? I'd like to have a bathroom like that in real life! I'm about to be officially jealous of my 3D characters!)

I've stockpiled a lot of content and utilities against my inevitable migration of an extensive character library from G1 to G3. But I'm still dragging my feet.

So far I've only actually used G3 in a couple of renders. I'm running a recent iMac, with the RAM maxed out to 32GB, and I found G3 apallingly unresponive when I tried to pose it. And now with the loss of Dimension3D, I'm not even slightly tempted by the prospect of moving that library into anything beyond G3 without the aid of GenX.

I rather suspect that unless G4 can offer a *lot* more than I expect it to be able to, I'll download the free base figures, and pick up the head+body morphs packages when they come out, and will sit on my hands thereafter.

After all, one can always tempt me with sets and props.

It may be dead from the perspective of many PAs, but when it comes to finding stuff I need, as well as certain base figures for particular stuff I notice that G2 more often than not fills a gap that G3 never got around to,  and considering if G4 is about to come out,  then odds are G2 will continue to fill that niche since I'm pretty sure G4 is going to be inundated with a bunch of the same stuff we've already got tons of and figures that look pretty much indistinguishable from their G3 counterparts.

I still use G1 and G2, as most of my renders are for my webcomic, and most of my main characters are of those generations, so that isn't going to change. I use V/M4 and G3 mainly for secondary characters, if at all. I've even used V3 a couple of times.
Not at all interested in G4. My new-content purchases will be sets and props.

...I hear you on that. Got into G3 only because Daz released a teen character early on and Zev0 updated the Growing Up morphs shortly afterwards. Still primarily worked with G2 because of the incompatibility of older skins due to the mapping change. When I learned that Zev0 and Draagonstorm were working on an updated Skin builder for G3F that was news to my ears as I could create my own skins complete with details like freckles, vascularity, and age spots. With its release, (along with an upadted version of GenX) G3 has become far more useful than it was for me. Probably the only older figures I use now are A3 (always had a soft spot for her) and the original Genesis mostly for aliens, toon characters, and creature morphs.

..oh forgot, G2 is still my go to in Carrara as G3 is not supported. (commenting from my phone which makes it difficult to insert paragraph breaks and do other formatting)

    well not officially I agree

but yeah I mostly genX them to genesis for Carrara and use the originals in iClone the only thing they do animate well in.
