...well working on troubleshooting.  For some reason Iray is acting more like Lux with the scene rendering at a geologic pace.  it's definitely not the character as the proof render with my photo studio setup only took aout 12 - 15 min.  Don't understand why as the scene itself is not that complex.

have you checked all the settings in your render settings been few changes think my render I did as I mentioned took 2.5 days and I have 2 gtx 1080's I did max the min samples and the max samples set to 25000 but on other renders which I used this took around 2-3 hours only and some of them had lot of content detail. BTW the max samples at max keeps alternating max being 25000 other times not sure what max is cause kept raising it couldn't find what max was then other times max is 25000 oh also been setting the time to 0

...I use a default of 15,000 iterations, 28,800 seconds and 99.9% convergence.  I am rendering on the CPU as I don''t have a high memory GPU card, however I've not seen Iray this glacial before.

For the setting I am only using three buildings from Stonemason's Urban Future 5 two photometric spotlights (in place of the emissive surfaces in the two streetlights that affect the scene), one ghost light, and the Sun/Sky environment setting dimmed down to simulate moonlight.  I unparented and deleted everything in the set I could that didn't affect what was seen in the camera, as well as turned off all emissive surfaces except the couple that are seen in the camera's view plane.  I've rendered scenes with far more emissive surfaces and more characters than this one which took less time.

...none of the older content  I'm using was updated recently.  Both Mika and Urban Future 5 are new.

I decided to opened the scene in the 4.9 beta to give that a try and surprisingly, it is rendering much faster. In 27 minutes it's already reached 32% whereas in that same amount of time there still wasn't a yellow bar on the progress monitor.  Must be something in the way 4.9 handles emissives that is more efficient than 4.8..,Anyway it's chugging along quite fine now. I figure maybe 2 - 3 hours tops.  Kept the photometric spotlights in for the streetlights as they produce shadows which the emissive ones didn't do.

  • you didn't mention it was 4.8 you were using now 4.9 read elsewhere those using the previous version have had some other problems of course it's the same with the newer version too in some areas some have had problems they didn't aren't having with the older oneSo it's a good thing you never uninstalled 4.8 just in case there's an issue in either of the 4.9 versions and vice versa for any specif scene your working on. I have had heaps of updates all over the place on older and newer content but there has been a fair few for the newest content like the Mika stuff. I've had some content issues of late myself with content was installed on my small c drive as well as well then when dim installed still had to also install in studio and sometimes again next time studio starts or different parts of a product have to install such as materials

...I saved back ups of all the .zips/install files of older versions just in case (I have installers that go back to Daz 1.7). so If I installed the non beta version of 4.9 and ran into serious issues, I could uninstall it and roll back to 4.8.  This is also why I am only running the public Beta of 4.9 as I can have both it and 4.8 running concurrently.

Got home to find the process around 75% after 6 hours.  Canceled to fix something and then decided to remove the steam prop in the scene.  After restarting the render process It's at 45% after 22 minutes.  Seems the steam props put a heavy load on my system.

Really want this to turn out good as it's a slightly twisted and fun little scene.

What steam prop were you using? I've found iRay gets all glacial on me if I have any sort of volumetric in it, I added some dust with Epic God Ray's and after 3days my render is at 14% test renders prior were couple of hours!!

yeah don't you just hate when you have the perfect scene setup but there's that just one piece causing some problem but you just can't take it out/change cause it makes the scene - same with lights
