Ron's Glitter and PS version question

sapatsapat Posts: 1,735

I see sadly that Ron's Glitter is stated to be for CS6/CC.  Well, I only have CS2 and no plans or money to get anything newer or different.  Will these brushes and layer styles work in my old CS2?  Or do I have to do a buy/try/return to find out?

https://www.daz3d.com/ron-s-glitter

Thanks. frown

They don't work in my CS5 sadly.

Although the file inside content folder says v-CC;CS6;CS5;CS4;CS3;CS2;CS;7 so I'm a bit confused and submitted a ticket.

    Hey hun,

Well, I took a chance and bought them and am going to have to return them.  I tried opening them in my CS2 and they give me an error message saying they won't work in my version.  So the info in the Content folder where they extract needs to be changed before the product is uploaded and packed by Daz.

I bought the Powder brushes a year or so ago even though the product page was not too specific.  It kind of said the brushes were for Files included PS- CS6-CC but lower versions could use the included vectors. I got them taking a chance, and the brushes did work for me after all.  So I was hoping these would too, but nope.

    Hugz,

    Suze sad

I just submitted a ticket as well, and also included a screenshot of the inside of the zip to show that big long string of versions that needs to be changed, and find out whatever that 'appdir_common' stuff is.  Probably Mac crap that Windows users (like me) constantly have to delete every time I buy a pack of his/hers.  I do custom installs to specific folders and don't need any of it anyway.

TTYL....congrats on the Rings n' Things too laugh yes

I had to update my operating system to get the latest Photoshop but its now a subscription service. You don't buy the program, but rent it. Its only like $10/month.

Well they are not showing up in CS6 either. After reading this post I went and checked and nope, they are not showing up, so maybe there is a problem in CS6 as well.

Hmmm, now that is weird.  Sounds like customer service is going to get several help tickets for this product.

Yeah, not gonna 'rent' my software which is what happened with the discontinuation of CS6 and the move to CC.  If I had the money I'd buy it outright, but I don't.  Last I looked, the 'rent' was $240/yr or $20/mo.  After a year, I'd have to cough up another chunk of cash.  crying  It's like a money pit.

I install manually.  I extract any Ron's packs into a dummy folder, then manually drag the .abr and .asl to specific folders on an external drive where all my other Ron's brushes/styles are.  Then I drag the pdf's to their own file in the same spot.  I don't ever use DIM.

The Styles work fine for me which is a plus, but on the other hand that means 1/2 the product works, and the other half doesn't.

In my opinion, the brushes should be backwards compatible to at least CS since I'm sure they're not anything special.  Just my 2 cents.

I install manually too (CS6). If DIM has a problem installing any of Ron's brushes, it never says so, but where it thinks it's putting them is anybody's guess. A search of my hard drive half the time will reveal that they aren't even there at all. I just do it myself every time now.

Yep, me too. Something named 'DIM' doesn't really inspire confidence.  All I think of is Dim bulb. LOL!

Funnily enough, when I was writing I was actually thinking 'Dim by name, dim by nature!' :)

  • this helps me out as I use Paintshop Pro and others have said you can in most cases make use of photoshop content in paintshop pro the fact that many of you are unable to use these in your current versions of photoshop tells me there's no way I could use these and a lot of others. Pity as he has some pretty cool effects

I bought PSP X9 Ultimate a while back and haven't installed it yet.  So not sure how it handles these brushes.  I know my old version of PSP9 from Jasc wouldn't at all.  I had to go through abr viewer and convert them to png and then I could use them if they were't more than 500x500px.

I just found a little utility called abrMate that I dl and will try.  See if it works.  Says it converts newer PS versions of brushes to older versions.  We'll see.

    Greetings,

In DAZ Install Manager, if you've installed it, you can search for the product in the 'Installed' tab, there's a -> arrow at the end of the line.  Click that.  Pick 'Show installed files'.  If the items are blue, then they're pointing to a real location.  If you click the link to the files, it will bring you to that folder, with the one you clicked highlighted.  It does this on a Mac, and I'm fairly sure it does it on Windows as well.

That's why I use DAZ Install Manager.

If there's an .abr file, it should work as the brush format hasn't changed in a while as far as I know.  If there _isn't_ a brush file, it's probably a packaging bug.

You'll all be much better off by doing a manual install of the brushes, styles, etc to the location where you normally have your PS brushes, etc.

I just talked to someone else about this, actually. Soooo... grab this, its free.

    http://www.texturemate.com/abrMate

It will convert your brushes to any vs of PS (I often use it when I actually make brushes for sale) If it doesnt work (or if ur using PSP or some other app) you can actually export them all as PNG's and do it the long way around (if u know how to make brushes in ps) But in my experience, its always worked (using CS6 here)

It does, actually. Pretty sure I did my brushes on DAZ in CS6 and converted backwards. But it is possible I did it the long way around via exporting png's, but I dont remember for sure (I do own PS 7, CS3, CS5 and CS6 and had them ALL installed at once on my old system, so its hard telling lol)

Yes, I was just hoping they'd be usable as brushes.  I submitted a ticket the other day but they must be swamped because I got an email today saying 'we'll get back to you'

  • I'm coming into your thread late, but I wanted to let you know that I have Photoshop C6 that my neighbor gave me a year ago, but I'm too lazy to learn it. I've been a faithful Paintshop Pro user for probably close t 20 years and I don't want to teach this old dog a new trick just yet. That being said, I use Paintshop Pro X9 Ultimate and have bought almost all Ron's brushes. PSX9 has an 'import custom brush' feature that converts all his brushes perfectly. Well, not perfectly. I find that some of the brush variances need to be fixed, but I usally do that anyway, depending upon my project. No loss of quality or size. Obviously I don't use the PS styles or actions, but I will.... someday.  Just thought I'd leave that here... PaintShop Pro X9 Ultimate CAN use Ron's brushes. Hope that helps someone. :)

Wow, thanks for that info!  I just upgraded to PSPProX9.  Have the DVD's sitting on my desk but haven't installed yet.  I have been using PSP since it was Freeware/Shareware way back in the early days and PSP9 is my daily go to.  Then when Office Max in our area went out of business they had PSCS2 for 70% off the fulll version, so I bought it.  But that was probably 12-15 yr ago.  Basically I never use it for anything but brushes since I never taught myself how to use it for anything else either.  Fingers crossed!!  laugh
