Favorite Kit-bashing Outfits

There are several prople here who have a great talent for kit-bashing pieces of this outfit with that one and come up with new and unique looks.  Many of us have a habit of openieng a set and just using what shipped in the package.  We get stuck in the "this character looks like that character's twin sister" cycle.  I'd love to see some thinking outside the box ideas.

What are some of your favorite outfits for kit-bashing and why?  (ease of use, features that make it fit over/under other things, cool factor etc....)

I am trying to get more creative with my art and I am sure others here would love to see some of you who excel in this skill pop in and share.  :)

  • When I was first introduced to DAZ Studio, my 'go-to' out fit for Vicky Four was the Shadow Dancer outfit.

That was way back in '09.  And as time passed I'd just added or removed items as needed.  Here's one of my favorite characters wearing Shadow dancer leg and foot wear, with Assassin Angel pants and top.  She has Complicated Eve belt and shoulder holster, along with the Domino overcoat.  She also has Exnem's holster and weapons from ArtemisX and a WP38.

I'm sorry I'm not being specific, but sometimes when I have the artist's version of writer's block, I'll just pick some random top, mix with some random bottom, add some random boots, maybe gloves, bracers, then find a shader that works with it all, usually sci-fi, sometimes fantasy, Steampunk... Just play. You don't need to plan everything out. Just throw things together and surprise yourself. Have fun...

  • What Wonderland said... I grab some type of STARTING piece that is needed for the "story" then just look at all the rest of my various footwear, bottoms, tops, accesories, more.

Especially for sci-fi and supers I mess with shaders and turning bits and pieces off too. Surprisingly, I have found matching color on color gives some very interesting mixes for these 2 types.

  • @Xavier Leggett - Totally forgot about Shadow Dancer.  I used to use it quite a bit.  :)

@Wonderland - Definitely a good suggestion.  :)  I do that with props etc in  my scene.  My rooms rarely use the furniture it ships with etc...  One reason I was thinking 'examples' is because there are some really cool outfits out there that get forgotten and it is fun to see what people put together and what they use.  But yes, I agree....just add and go definitely makes for some fun art.

I really like Urban Survivors for G3 and the Attitude Outfit...I've used those together before. The shirt goes with any pants really. The underwear is from G3M Basicwear

  • Well, maybe not exactly kit bashing because they are pieces but I like DZFire's Nurnies and Greebles.

  • @Charlie Judge - That's an awesome choice.  I have them and and always forget about them when piecing things together.  Thank you.  :)

A recent favorite of mine is Luthbellina's Diana and Jones http://www.daz3d.com/diana-and-jones-outfit-for-genesis-2-male-s-and-female-s ; Lots of great pieces and already set up for both male and female versions.  Two of IHKang's suits that keep showing up in bits and pieces are the Doctor Coat outfit http://www.daz3d.com/doctor-coat-outfit-for-genesis-3-female-s and the Equestrian outfit.  http://www.daz3d.com/equestrian-uniform-for-genesis-3-female-s ; Another one that I keep pulling out is the original Genesis Supersuit... though as often as not I'm using it as an undergarmet to make something else fit better with all those handy morphs.

  • You know that old V4 outfit Domino?

I still love it after all these years. Great peices to mix and match.

I kitbash a lot.  To the point where I'm actively disappointed when I get an outfit and what I wanted to be separate parts are not, and I will not buy an outfit that doesn't come with "enough" parts.  (Slacks that stop just below the top of the boots are disappointing too, since I then have to find another pair of boots that are as high.)

Most of my "default" parts are PC+ sets that are for Genesis/Genesis 2M.  All of the parts autofit well, and require only a little bit of tweaking to layer them:

Wolf King - mostly for the boots and pants, but I'll use the vest a lot too.

Adventurer - The shirt and vest get a lot of use from me.

Elven Warrior - Probably one of the best autofitting tunics out there.  I've never had a missed vertex mess things up.

Pirate and Piratess get a lot of use from me too - again, good autofits (though I haven't tried the skirts to G3 yet) and lots of layers, which gives you more options for layering other things.

But really, if it comes in parts, I've probably kitbashed with it at least once. :)

The Genesis Supersuit. It's just so damn versatile. Even the Basic Suit is so useful.

Genesis Morphing Business Suit. Another very versatile set.

Town and Country. Great for either formal or work attire.

Morphing Fantasy Dress. All you need are textures for a bazillion uses.

    V4.2 Basic wear.

Defiant for Genesis. 13 piece set of medieval goodness. Another case where having good seamless textures can go a long way.

Medieval Cloak set for Genesis Female. Pretty much all the cloaks you'll ever need.
