Is DAZ Studio not free any more?

    Well, it was sort of free, in that there was a free upgrade from RayDream, which itself was a free upgrade from CorelDream, which was bundled free with CorelDraw.

    Not from DAZ, but there was a book "Figures, Characters and Avatars: The Official Guide to Using DAZ Studio to Create Beautiful Art" by: Les Pardew... It came with a DVD that contained Hexagon and Carrara 6 Pro... (I think it was 6)... It was officially recognized by DAZ at the time, so if you bought it from DAZ or showed proof of purchase, you could have the serial number in your library...  There was also a bunch of (now) older content on there too... At the time it was a pretty awesome value, I think I paid $19 or $20 for it... At the time Carrar was only up to 7, so to get Hex and C6 Pro and a bunch of still newish content for that price was great... A few month later Carrara moved up to 8 and eventually I got 7 pro free from a 3D magazine (but you didn't have the ability to register the serial number for your library)... The serial number for that was included on the disc and if you lost it you were screwed.

    If anyone decides to look up that book, be aware of two things... DAZ may no longer be able to add the serial number to your library, because things were set up differently back then... And two there was some issues with one of the serial numbers... I think it was Hexagon. 

    Actually be aware of three things... Only original issues of the book come with the disc... That book has the old grey DAZ three point logo on a mostly yellow cover with V4's face on the bottom left... The newer reprints have no disc but somehow get you the already free DS 4.? for free... Those versions have some sort of V4 Angel or Valkyrie character on the cover...

    The book by itself was not very informative and I think it really only touches on the most basic ideas and only in the most basic way... So if you accidentally get the one without the disc, you'll most likely be severely disappointed.

    I paid for the "advanced" version of DS3 back in the day (2009)

    Before Crazy Eddie's imploded, it got really cheesy... They used to constantly run bait and switch ads or have super limited stock on sale items... At one point NYC called them out on it and they started to print actual numbers of stuff on hand... It was ridiculous, in fine print you'd see "two units per location" or something stupid like that... If you were the first person through the door the moment they opened, maybe you might get it... Maybe...  Me and my friend waited outside a store one morning for a super cheap sale item (I think it was a stereo) we were the first in and they didn't have the item and made up a BS story... We started making noise about calling the news and they gave my friend a more expensive, better brand item for the same price... But we really got obnoxious. 

    In the beginning they weren't so bad, but in the end the place was a carnival sideshow.

     

    EDITED TO ADD...  I just realized this thread is from February 2016... Not 2017...

    Not quite, but nearly; if you keep a careful eye on the prices, a few times a year it goes on really deep discounts. That's how I got it, a few years ago.

    DAZ Studio went free, after I'd spent months agonizing over buying it. The same happened with many plugins. I don't buy any DAZ software any more. If you wait long enough, you might just get it free. Oh, but yes, I do buy DAZ Content!

    I went back and checked and it was Carrara 7 Pro, the full version, that was available free from multiple sources, including CNET, after C8 Pro was released.

    Yeah, the cheapest I've seen in the last couple of months was around $14, but I own 8 Pro and there's an automatic 50% discount on an upgrade, so it was proably just under $30 if you were in the PC and closer to $60 if you weren't. .

    I treat 'Free' with a lot of scepticism; one of the reasons I think Daz's sales that say buy this get that for free aare a mistake. It's a greatly misused and abused term.

    You're implying Poser, even now, is better. Heh. Heh heh heh.

    Daz does have EXCELLENT onboarding though. Way better than Blender or Unity or Adobe.

    Hmmm... I just assumed it was something kinky that was going on that I hadn't noticed yet or was some PC+ bonus... Glad that was explained... I almost signed up for PC+
