I really hope not. But if they do, I'll just have to learn how to model my own clothes. It would certainly be less expensive to buy a perpetual license for Marvelous Designer and learn how to rig than to start over with yet another generation of figures!

More DRM (Connect) products has put me off, basically, I don't care that much.
All the stuff I got for a rediculously low price, is using what little free time I have. I'm going to be months working through it all; so i can wait - it is only a cliche because it's true; there will always be another sale.
If I was a betting-man, I'd put money on G4 this year; no idea when, although middle of the year seems reasonable. If i was Daz however, I'd delay it; cause folks would absolutely know when G5 is due, that sort of knowledge affects yours sales. Especially damaging when it isn't true, so this time they need to switch 'something'; glad I'm not the one in charge at Daz, having to decide what is best to do.
Today, the number of active items in the store went through 25000; a nice big, round number of the type that people are sometimes prone to celebrate.
Being sad, I'd noticed the number approaching a few weeks back (even mentioned it to DAZ_Steve). Then I noticed the number of store items sometimes tweakily diminishing even as new items were being added, and thought maybe they were deleting older items so that they could time an event. Yesterday, the number of store items stood at 24999 - which is an interesting place to land entirely by accident.
So, knowing nothing about nothing, I added one and twenty four thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine together and got...
...nothing.
The number of items in the store is now 25008, and not so much as a whoopie-whistle was half-heartedly breathed into, just to see what colour the little feather on the end was.
Which just goes to show that there are slow worms with dementia that have forgotten more about marketing than I will ever know.
I have no idea. But there are some nice products out today. And yes, seems like Tuesdays are big days around here.
I was surprised too that they let the ten-year anniversary of Victoria 4''s relese go by unrecognised as well, but then there were plenty of other good sales in December...
That really is a big marketing blunder. Not surprised at all.
ah but if they did all those sort of things that you all seem to think are so predictable they would leave you without anything to speculate and formulate hypotheses about, and you would all get bored and wander away in search of more interesting deceased equines.
I'm making an effort to curb my spending here considerably this year. I had to take a good, long hard look at some of the things I've had in my cart (usually clothes and hair) and ask myself "Do I really need this?" Unless it's something substantial at a really deep discount.
I thought the BYOB sale was rather ingenious (even including certain base characters for $5 extra), but if it ended up causing Daz to lose more money than it actually made, then I doubt we'll see anything like it again any time soon, especially since it could be activated with PC+ items that are typically dirt cheap for PC+ members. Same thing with the freebies from the Christmas sale last year... but a lot of those items were either PC+, textures, poses that are included in the pro bundles, or reeeeeeally old items (we're talking Vicki/Michael 3 era). I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens with March Madness this year.
Not to worry. There still is Valentines Day, Presidents Day, GroundHog Day, etc for sales opportunities before March Madness.

I wonder if they *can* lose more money than they make selling digital content. It seems at a certian point with digital titles delivered electronically, it becomes almost purely profit. I mean, you've got to pay the IT staff and the developers and the utilities and the equipment - but if you're selling something you've already recouped all your costs to CREATE on - it becomes an equation of, "would we make MORE charging more and selling less, or more charging less and selling more?"
I'm inclined to believe the latter is generally the case, if you can scale up sales enough. Businesses can get caught up in seeing discounts as lost profits on money they *think* they should be able to make for an item, versus what the market is actually willing to pay. I think this argument applies to the monetary claims the software industry attributes to piracy. "We lost 20 bajillion dollars to piracy this year."
No, you didn't. You put a price on what you think your product was worth, and then looked at the number of people who stole your stuff, and said, "that is how much we lost."
But at the price you were charging, a huge majority of those pirates would have just skipped your product altogether, if paying had been the ONLY way to get it. You can't lose a sale you never would have made.
Very rarely does a manufacturer underestimate the demand for their product and price it too low. The release of the Mazda Miata may have been the classic modern example of that. It is obvious when this happens, as demand outpaces supply. Most retail businesses have the other problem, they've got a whole lot of widgets to move and they can't seem to find as many consumers as they would like. :)
Not trying to justify piracy, here. Creators should get paid for their labor, and they've got to make enough to cover their costs *and* have a quality standard of living.
The equation here would seem to be, "did the advertising campaigns and subsequent sales make more money than they cost?"
If they did, I suspect we'll see similar sales in the future. My guess is that they know that there is a certain segment that will pay full price when they need content for a project, and there is another that will buy content they don't need when it isn't full price - and getting ALL the money possible from BOTH groups would be MY goal, if I were DAZ. :)

As you had to be a PC+ member to get the BYOBs, I suspect it was a good way to convince a lot of people it's well worth the cost of membership. And with all the incentives to spend your money, if you're a member, (coupons, DO discounts, Anniversary sale pricing,) I'm pretty sure they made money in the long run. I know I spent far more on BYOBs than I did on $2.99 bundles they put together the previous two years, combined. And it can be really hard to pass up DO new releases with the extra DO discount, especially if you're new to the hobby and still need practically everything. I'm guessing members spend a lot more money than non-members...
Skirting the issue of Piracy... I couldn't agree with you more. The cost of stocking products to DAZ, or any company selling digital products is negligble. Why pull down a product that sells one or two copies a year, if you're still making a profit on it? With many thousands of products like that, the back catalog can make a nice bit of steady income to augment the burst of income from new releases. The concept of "loss-leader" is very common in the retail, (brick and mortar,) world. That's what those weekly sales at your local grocer are all about. They may not make any money off that half-rack of soda, but most people will buy the half-rack and a lot more. Not many people will go to several stores to buy just the sales items, (though my mom used to do that, back in the 60s...) But in the digital product world, it's not really a loss when you put old products on sale for as much as 90% off, especially when buying a new release is required to trigger the discount.

In truth, the digital world rarely works that way.. The first point is that at least half of all businesses fail; we simply don't notice when a company has underpriced a product and, instead, just notice that the store on the corner that used to stock the thing you wanted is gone. The second point is that the digital transition didn't eliminate the central cost to business which is people. I endless hear people discussing that digital books should be cheaper since there is no physical printing. Unfortunately, the physical component is the smallest portion of the equation. It is all of that editing, the lawyers, etc... that is the bulk of the cost. What you are paying for when you buy a product is the sweat of the creator and all the people who have to process it. A practical example is the university I work at. We normally buy things through vendor agreements which may or may not give a cheaper price. Every once in a while, someone wants something that must be purchased through Amazon. The trick is voiding the vendor agreement and paying in a way that Amazon can accept adds another $30-40 Us to the cost so it is silly to buy a $5 object from Amazon. What you are getting from having digital assets is the ability to have hundreds of thousands of products in your store and being able to manage them in a sane way; it doesn't mean that they will be any cheaper.

To get stacking discounts from multiple sales, you need to put at least one new release from each sale. If you have the time, try loading up your cart with i13 wishlisted items, then add the Librarian bundle, plus one other new release from both the Sumo and Bundle sales and see what you end up with...
ETA: Nevermind... it appears DAZ has put a stop to multple purchases triggering stacking discounts. I guess it was inevitable...

Wanted sumo, ended up with demons somehow. I absolutely love the sumo stuff, but don't actually need it for anything right now. But I want it bad! Just because!
Didn't expect to buy the demons, but it was a great deal and I actually got a series idea out of that set, so at least I can justify it, LOL. And it was paid for with book royalties. Bonus! Now, if I can just figure out a sumo thing...I swear I'll need to live to be a thousand to write half the stuff I come up with. I'll have fun, though!
I tried it. Even though the other two sales (Bundle and Sumo) state no "additional purchase required" for those discounts (the additional 5% if you buy one of those new releases only applied once, even with a new release from each sale.)
Oh, well.....I needed to save my money for March Madness anyway.....
