Remind me what "Material ID" is, again, in the Surfaces tab
I looked up "Material ID" and the first reference in the Wiki talks only about advanced Iray settings.
However on my computer there is a "Material ID" thingy under the Surfaces tab.
I am trying to colorize/modify/shade/roughen, add hair to, etc. a primitive capsule or baton shape... I've got the surface color nailed, more or less -- although Iray shaders seem to override that? -- and I know where the checkerboard pattern is coming from (that's a reflection map that I made; I may have inadertently put it into the "Environment" in Render Settings, ooops) and most of the other stuff, but what is "Material ID" (marked with a red arrow) here?
We've touched on this before/recently I think, but are there any special rules with respect to changing Iray shaders mid-project, like do you have to close Studio or restart the computer or anything like that?

That allows you to set the colour that will be used for the surface, rather than having Iray pick one for you.
Leave it black...for most Studio 3DL shaders, it's not even used. Some of the toon shaders and maybe the AoA shader will actually use it.
It's a way of signalling to the shader that two surfaces using the same shader/settings/maps are in fact different.
No, nothing really needs to be done when switching.
