How did you choose your online name?!

I started this thread, years ago, in one forum. It was a very popular thread. So let's revive it. I'll start with my own story.

I've been in the online Poser forums since 1999. I've also branched out into YouTube videos, online shows, etc. For awhile I used various aliases. Sometime around 2000 I mentioned my YouTube videos to a friend. He asked what YouTube user name I was using at the time. I told him I didn't remember. He said I should darned well know who I was. After that, I switched to "ronknights," which is my name: Ron Knights! I've since switched over everything online to reflect the "ronknights" user name. If you do a Google search for ronknights, you'll find some interesting results on the first page.

So, what is your username, and what prompted you to choose it?!

A bit of family tradition, actually. When my father got promted to tool room foreman he wrote a series of tongue-in-cheek poison pen letters to the staff pointing out assorted inefficiencies both in tool room staff level and lower management level. He signed these with his name reversed - Knarf Namffuak. Some 6 or so years later, as second shift computer operator, I had occasion to leave a few pithy comments about some crud from a couple of remote sites (primarily notes on what I'd run into, and fixups I'd made, for the operations supervisor to understand why some off the run times were longer than normal); these were semi-humorus, and I signed them as 'hot shot second shift operator S.L.Namffuak'.

I've used namffuak as a userid for quite a few years since, as there are far too many Tom Kauffmans in existence.

    Tobor = robot spelled backwards.

Most of my forum usernames are famous movie robots.

With so many usernames and passwords, and adherence to the principle that one should never use the same one twice, I often have difficulty coming up with something unique. In this case, it was simply a double entendre of sorts that happened to occur to me.

Llynara is my whitehaired elf-like character that has been with me since my teens. I've wanted to write about her adventures for many years, but was discouraged watching my mother struggle in the traditional publishing industry for a long time. When ebooks came around, she and other family members ventured into it. Even my 93 year old grandfather is a published author! This year I took the plunge and published the first books of two very different but connected series. I should have two more out soon.

I've got over 30 years worth of stories saved up, waiting to burst out. Llynara is in quite a few of them. I use the name in most places because it's unique. My real name is Kim, though I've been mistaken for Amy, Pam, Tammy and sometimes Lynn. And of course, "Mom." (I have five boys, from toddler to mid 20s in age.)

I originally had just my initials and last name as my userid.  Then there was an upgrade to the server, and when I logged on, I got a message that my name was no longer available.  So...I tried a different name, and that was unavailable. I tried a bunch, and they were ALL unavailable!   I wanted dHoward, but that was unavailable too!

So..a bit frustrated by this time, I was wondering "When am I EVER going to pick a handle that this stupid server will like!?" GRRR!!

I typed in dHandle, certain that it would be rejected too, and wouldn't you just know it!?  The server said "Ok, wise guy.  You're stuck with that one. Now shut up and go away."

    And...here I am...

'cos it's me, basically smiley  Which is/was a bit unlike me as I don't usually bandy my name 'round the interwebz (or anywhere, really), but tryng to keep a host of sisparate usernames in check punted that idea into touch cheeky  Also aided by the fact hat my usual monikcer can be deemed by some forums, etc., as too short at 3 letters long.

  • I change mine as often as my underwear almost, am a bit annoyed about stuff hence the latest one which looks serious 3D modelling inspired but actually refers to the third digit not my middle toe, another limb.

My sn was my online gaming name for years. About 20 years ago I started to play a mud on AOL (yes that long ago) and needed a name for a new character. I had started just reading "Shadow Moon" so I looked through there for a name for what I expected to be a throwaway character (human bard, how boring is that?) and grabbed Khory. Who turned out to be a baby demon who inhabited a human body but was a pretty darn good fighter in the end and not really so inhuman. I ended up playing the character for almost 10 years in that game and others. Sooo.. When I first started 3d it was exclusively to try and do some character portraits for games. In the end, the 3d won out and I have not had time to game for ages.

Real name plus "K2" which is the name of the second-highest mountain, after Everest... I'm struggling with 3-D, heh.

I used a fantasy name generator until it came up with something that sounded cool: Dawnblade.  As Goldie Wilson in Back to the Future said: "I like the sound of that!"  I wish there was some interesting background for you, but it has no special meaning or significance, and my first name isn't Dawn so I wasn't trying to work that angle.

Kismet is such a popular username it is always taken on any forum.  I signed up in 2012.  Quite a boring story.

Nova was my Arabian at the time, he's my avatar. Since I'm a gal, I made it Novica. I'll never change my avatar as Nova's who I am named after.

  • Thomas is just my name.
Windar is just easier to say in english than my real surname - which I am yet to hear an english speaker say correctly. (it's written easily, just pronouncing it for english speakers is hard) It's just the word "Wind" with added "-ar" to make it sound more like a name.

  • The name "Rottenham," when I thought of it, made me laugh for days.  There is something very funny about ending person and place names with the word "ham."  :-)

I am sure that all the people who live in the UK, in places like  Rotherham, Newham, Nottingham, Tottenham, Oldham, Newsham, Faversham, West Ham, Birmingham, Lewisham, Gillingham, Chatham, Chippenham, Cheltenham, Buckingham, Dagenham, Evesham, Wrexham, Dereham, Altrincham, Durham, Billingham, Hexham and others will be very happy that you think their town and village names are funny.

  • I'm a die-hard Unix systems administrator. That is: I'm basically a systems administrator (I'm fluent with both Windows as well as Unix(-like) environments) but my personal preference lies with Unix and its commandline. Now, a commandline on Unix is often referred to as a shell. You have the Korn shell, Bourne shell, Bourne Again shell ("Bash"), C shell, etc. So someone using those shells could be considered my name ;)

The capitalized L is simply a little bad pun: emphasizing on somehting I like to think I'm not :)

Wow, thanks Chohole. I've been wondering about that for months, but have been too busy to try and figure it out. Never expected to find it hidden down there.

Mine is from a poem by William Blake that I liked when I was 22, when I chose it.

Professional digital artists have about four kinds of screen names:

-A variation on their real name

-Some overly dramatic screen name they chose when they were young (this is what mine is, obviously)(it could've been worse, I was LeadFeather on a few forums around that time)

-Something chosen to reflect their job, and thus using one of a few industry keywords (3D, Design, Theory, Light, etc.)

-A random word they thought was cool or silly

  • I love the night sky and star gazing. Plus, i'm a sucker for ancient egypt. smiley

  • Mine is because of the hobby I love and who I am.  I was always that mom who was knitting while waiting on the kids to finish whatever activity I had carted them off to do.  It's how I got through the boredom of waiting around.  I also got into the habit of always carrying extra supplies because I never knew who might ask if I could teach them how to knit.  I really enjoy corrupting victims helping encourage the next generation of knitters.  :)

Sickle, you're one of my favorite PAs, and your username is very memorable. Although, I'm not sure if the username is so memorable to me because of your great products, or because the name itself is so interesting and unique. Either way, great name and keep up the great work yes

I'll play. Although Sickleyield kind of spoiled it for me, 'cause I guess I fall into that " -Some overly dramatic screen name they chose when they were young " catagory. I mean, FeralFey isn't a variant of my name, although my middle inital does start with "F". And nowhere does "pose" or "art" show up there. But I guess I could also fall in the last category, 'cause I love words and I've always been amused by the word "feral".

I suppose if I were to change my screenname nowadays it would be "Bacon". In fact, the other PAs call me that. Forbidden Whispers calls me BW (for Bacon Wench) and in the PA chatroom (yes, we have a chatroom. It includes plush carpeting and an indoor swimming pool. Of course, the carpeting is IN the pool, but that's another story) I go by FeralBaconFey or FBF. I also answer to "hey you", "MOM!!!" and "Chrys".
