Thanks Allenart yes that helps,I thought it was some sort of paid subscription to games or illegal free downloads ( I am not a gamer anymore,to0 easy to get sucked into it and waste your life)LOL.
Steam is defintely on the up and up and totally legit. LOL. Also works on Linux which is a big plus in my book ;).

Still seems quite vague, I mean, what exactly is an Enterprise? My company is a limited company with two people working for it. Does that make me a Sole Trader, a Freelancer, or an Enterprise, I don't feel I am any of those three.
I read freelancer as self-employed/sole-trader, vs. being an employee of or partner in a company. It's not based on revenue but on corporate structure (or lack thereof).
I see what you mean.I think the answer lies in the statement of the FAQ "Like other software, we frequently check the use of Personal License in companies," and then " ... continue the use of Marvelous Designer in Enterprise conditions, " I guess what they mean is that personal edition cannot be installed on the assets owned by a company. So prior to the Steam launch, Daz could essentially buy an item from a freelancer if it was developed on their (freelancer's) systems using a personal license. But the explanation they provided at Steam puts additional restrictions while creating more confusion as it now targets the intent of development. Again, I guess the FAQ on the MD website was written prior to the Steam launch and has not been updated.
Our government recently introduced the concept of One Person Company. Guess it just keeps getting better and better.
Unless those partners in the limited are actually listed on the articles of organization for that limited a couple of people you are working with to make a game or models under the banner of a limited does not actually formally or legally make them employees or members of that limited. You need actually taxable income earned by that limited and distributed as profit or salary.
I know it looks nice and professional to talk about your limited business venture but the fact is you are just costing yourself money in your situation by forming anything other than a sole proprietorship LLC and save the formalities of partnership when you actually have a viable shipping product. And the fact that you've created an LLC doesn't make you a commercial venture, in the US, even the IRS regards all these LLCs as disregarded entities until they actually make taxable profit.
Also, separate freelancing for a living compared to creating an LLC to speculate as a business. Freelancers do often organize as a business and sometimes have to organize as a business in some legal jurisdictions. LLCs used to be somewhat uncommon but in today's market of electronic apps, electronic games, and electronic virtual goods they are usually just an exercise in avoiding unneeded tax liabilities and risks and are usually freelancers and hobbyists employing themselves in a speculative style and using sometimes somewhat large personal money outlays to try and sucessfully make money in one of those electronic markets. It's those type of situations that the Unity Free, Pro, and Commercial EULA licenses terms and the DAZ 3D Game Development licenses term EULAs recognize and so include an earnings limit in their EULAs.
Read the MD EULA and publish as an individual if you are wanting to try earning money commercially with an MD Personal License and their EULA terms don't make mention of an earnings limit for commercial sale of products that have MD made items as part of their content.
Mine is actually a UK company, and Ltd is pretty standard for small companies here. The status above that is incorportated, but that is normally only for large companies with 100+ employees. My company has paid employees, it submits proper accounts each year, and pays corporation tax, so that is likely to make it an enterprise from MD's standpoint.
MD looks like a valuable tool, and the sale price is decent. I assume that is a one-time price and that no ongoing subscription fees apply. Please correct me if I'm wrong. But there is one thing I don't understand. They call it "Marvelous Designer 6 For Steam." For Steam? What does that mean? The System Requirements do not list anything except a Windows PC. Aside from acting as a vendor, how is Steam related to this software? Thanks.

OK nevermind, I see now the beginning of the thread. We be lawyers now. That's $224 and no additional fees. Assumably, at some undetermined point in the future, it will be disabled. I'm guessing. AND you must allow Steam access through your firewall every time you want to run MD. Egad. Still, it's a cheap way to get your feet wet.
I'd like to know where you're seeing $385 "at the store." I went to the Marvelous Designer website, and I'm not seeing any sale pricing. I'm interested in purchasing a perpetual personal license at some point...

...yeah but from my perspective. MD is easier to use. Ihave MD2 which while not as feature laden as teh new version takes clothing design from a clothing/costume maker's POV (I have some experience in theatrical costume design and construction) than that of standard vertex/polygon modelling. It's UI is also much more "friendly" than Blender's.

Just trying MD out for the first time I used a T-Shirt template on G3M and didn't turn out too bad I turned the mesh into quads before I fitted it.

Where are the seams? With all I've been hearing about MD and how the clothes are put together, I expected to see seams in the proper places. Does it not do that for you?
Here's a shot of the raw export from MD, you quadrangulate it first before exporting. but then I redid the topology again before inporting into DS.

Upgrade from Marvelous Designer 5 to 6 is available at 25% off the license fee. For users who upgrading from old versions of Marvelous Designer 3 and Marvelous Designer 4, upgrade is available at 40% off the license fee.
Gives you an idea of prices for an upgrade if you have the MD perpetual version so no free upgrades for any version. I am leaning towards the steam version now,as there does not seem much difference in conditions although it is still a lot of money.
This seems to answer some questions taken from the MD website. I think it means 1 freelancer 1 copy used by one person

If the License Confirmation identifies the License Class as a "Enterprise Stand-alone License", Licensee, which is a Legal Entity, may install a single primary copy of the specified Licensed Materials designated in the applicable License Confirmation on one (1) computer, on a Stand-alone Basis, and permit access to such primary copy of the Licensed Materials solely by Licensee's authorized personnel, and solely for Licensee's Internal Business Needs.
9.7.4 Enterprise Network License.
If the License Confirmation identifies the License Class for the Licensed Materials as a "Enterprise Network License", Licensee, which is a Legal Entity, may install copies of the specified Licensed Materials designated in the applicable License Confirmation on a single file server computer and permit access to such Licensed Materials on Computers in an amount up to the Permitted Number of Computers, on a Networked Basis, solely by Licensee's authorized personnel, solely for Licensee's Internal Business Needs. CLO shall provide a hardware dongle(s) (a "Network Dongle"), which will enable the Permitted Number of Computers in Licensee's network to access the Licensed Materials. IF A NETWORK DONGLE IS DAMAGED, DESTROYED, MISPLACED, OR OTHERWISE BECOMES IMPAIRED OR UNUSABLE DUE TO NO FAULT OF CLO, CLO WILL PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT NETWORK DONGLE, BUT ONLY UPON PAYMENT BY LICENSEE OF THE APPLICABLE LICENSEE FEE (WHICH SHALL BE NO LESS THAN THE LICENSE FEE PAID BY LICENSEE FOR THE LICENSED NUMBER EMBODIED IN THE REPLACED NETWORK DONGLE).
Still a bit vague regarding what a commercial organisation is. In the UK, a lot of freelancers work through a limited company for various reasons (reclaiming VAT, offsetting expenses, limiting personally liability etc), but from a legal standpoint, these small 1 or 2 man companies are no different than a large one making millions.
Note: It may be possible you need to be signed into Steam in order to use MD for Steam. Some Steam games and software are like this, making Steam effectively a form of DRM, though note it has an offline mode. (Steam is pretty lightweight, btw.) But that is just a possibility, as there some games do not need Steam running to launch. It really is best to ask MD this and other questions directly, either on Steam's forums or whatever customer support they have.
Steam is mostly games, but it does have a number of software tools as well, and the software section is growing very rapidly. Steam is the largest PC game distributor on Earth, and by a very large margin. And now it is becoming the largest software distributor, period. It has well over 140 million active users, and that stat is a couple years old. I bet they probably have 160 or 175 million by now. Its shear size is why I think Daz should consider getting listed on Steam. After all, Daz Studio is technically "free to play." I think it would be a tremendous opportunity for explosive growth. It is clear that Marvelous Designer feel that way as well. Unity is also on Steam, and so are many other 3d creation programs. It would get a lot of people in the door, and if by chance Daz3d was ever featured on the front store page...LOOK OUT. It is not unusual for an obscure game to suddenly sell more copies in a single day than in its entire existence by several orders of magnitude. All because it got featured.
The fundamental difference between Daz3D and MD is that Daz is primarily a storefront pretty much like Steam itself. Though it has a product - studio like MD but that's not the primary source of revenue for Daz. If you say that the studio is free-2-play then how many free-2-play games/apps are advertised on the Steam landing page (except during their week of launch, of course). It shall never go on sale hence after it is launched, it would get lost in the ocean of other free-2-play stuff. Poser, however, is a different case.
So the point of reaching to millions of Steam users seems pretty moot here. On the other hand, moving to Steam would gradually cause content (and plugin) developers to migrate to Steam eventually. How PAs would package and distribute their 3D assets for Daz at Steam is a subject of another discussion. But assuming that somehow that is achieved through the Steam Workshop (or otherwise), it would mean the death of the Daz storefront and hence losing their primary source of revenue.
So unless daz plans to put a price tag on the studio (and moves out of the razorblade business model) I do not see much benefit in moving to Steam with the current strategy.
Having said that, it is possible to successfully implement the razorblade business model in Steam. Valve has already done that with microtransactions in Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2. It is worth noting that in either case, all the revenue from microtransactions directly goes to Valve. But whether that business model can be incorporated for 3D asset sales and how the revenue can be channelled to multiple vendors through Steam and how much commission can Daz make out of that is again a subject of another discussion.
P.S. One of the rare instance where a commercial game got an unprecedented attention at Steam was Left for Dead 2 during 2013 holidays. The attention it generated brought down the entire steam server farms globally for the better part of the day as one needed to download the game to get it free.
I think this is exciting, but as an avid Steam user there are some things I am concerned about which you may want to consider. Some games and tools do not require you to maintain a continuous Internet connection to Steam to use them, but indeed some do. Furthermore, among the games and tools that do not require continuous Internet connection to Steam to function properly, some do require that you login at least once every so often to maintain functionality--which is generally correctable by logging in to the service again. Also, Steam does not guarantee usability of purchased items beyond any given period, and some programs (I refuse to say 'apps' unless we're talking specifically about mobiles) languish when some update to Windows or other changes cause a program to malfunction, which is more or less dependent upon the developer of the software to keep up with. And then there's the possibility that Steam itself, however unlikely, could cease to do business. So, yes, as another put it, it may eventually go away. Having said all that, however, I've got games and tools I've been running on Steam for eight years without issue. Seems like a wonderful deal.

I'm not seeing how much the Steam Perpetual license will cost, but not having "patches and minor updates" included in the $224 price would be a deal-breaker for me, depending upon what they consider "patches and minor updates." Or is this saying that the Marvelous Designer 6 personal for Steam IS the Steam Perpetual license? They really could do with a decent editor.
It's saying that patches and minor updates are included, but not major updates - I don't know if MD does "major updates" that are separate from increasing the version number or if it means only that we would ahve to buy a fresh full copy for MD7 Steam, assuming there was one.
Steam can simply be a place to distribute the software. To make a comparison, right now Daz3d is in a hobby shop in a mall, but Steam is like Amazon. That Daz is free is moot point. GameMaker Studio is on Steam for free, and yet YoYo has its very own asset store...just like Daz! GMS has about 200,000 owners on Steam. And then there is Blender. That's right, Blender is on Steam! Blender has over 800,000 people who own it from Steam. Think about that, Blender has its own website and download portal...Yet over 800,000 people have acquired it from Steam. The GODOT game engine is free, and just came out in February. but this little engine already has 120,000 owners on Steam. Fuse is a 3D character creation tool which has a strikingly similar pitch to Daz Studio, yet is pretty lacking in options. This tool also has over 300,000 owners from Steam. And it is nothing compared to Daz.
Clearly, the software I list above have benefited greatly by being listed on Steam. And Daz3d is pretty decent, easily better than some of this other stuff. I think Daz Studio could easily get 300,000+ new users into the Daz ecosystem. Surely Daz can do better than Fuse? I also think that PA's would like to have several hundred thousand potential new customers. But that's just me. And Daz wouldn't need to sell anything on Steam, again, look at Blender, it has no paid add ons. Free to play stuff has its very own section, and they do get featured. Somehow Blender got 800,000 people from Steam. All the items I mentioned are free software, and all have hundreds of thousands of users just from Steam. How did that happen?
I didn't say unprecedented attention in the media or Steam, but for Daz3d, I think it would be unprecedented and explosive from Daz Studio's perspective. Being free, it would attract a lot of attention. And as I said, Daz is better than much of the software I listed.
You are making an assumption that no steam or blender users are using Daz Studio, I would think that most of those people would own it, as it's free. GM yes may be free but if you can't publish it to android and IOS they aren't going to make much. Daz used the same tactic as Microsoft did with the wed browser and have take huge chunks out of the opposition, just a good business plan. Mind you I think they will get burnt with the games adventure as everyone who has tried to take the games market has failed, the number of developers compared to players of games would be 10-1 maybe more. Plus 2D games on mobile apps far outweighs the 3D games, and DAZ has not 2D software to get into that market. That's it time to get off my soapbox and get some work done, as you can't make a living typing in forums !
