Thanks for the heads-up - I saw a couple in there yesterday but now there are loads of them in.  Picked up Ron's horror bundle (already had one of the sets in there but the others worked out at under $2 a set), Ron's space, and Ron's Digital Energy.  Previously got Ron's Rain / Fog / Tornado / Stains-Splatter-... from here -  and Clearwater, Vector Grunge, and Smoke from that other store a long while back.

I can't recommend them highly enough - they really do make a great difference to an image and they're pretty easy to use (even in GIMP, since I don't have PS - just can't use the photoshop actions that some of them have).

For instance, this image used to have clement weather:

(^even got a comment from Deviney (Ron) himself - I was so happy smiley )

And I don't claim any great skill in postwork - just learn how to use layers so you can paint on a new one, and it's easy)

I think I own most of Ron's brushes now, but am dashing off to see if there are any  I don't have in fast grab. I use them a lot. They are fantastic!

I used his digital energy brushes on this one, as well as Marshian's Rim Light Rig for 3delight. Both are great products.

I own some of the Deviney packs.  I produce video.

My current projects are Sci-Fi and apocalyptic.

Here is what I own now. Since they are in fast grab at 70% discount I was thinking to acquire additional packs.

    I would appreciate any Recommendations.

I finally took the plunge and bought a couple combo packs. Even figured out how to use them in my paint shop program. Should of done this a long time ago.

I promised myself that I would stop buying after the PC sale was over. Especially since I didn't have any money left.  And now THIS! There ain't no justice! So anyway I broke my promise to myself

I have most of those, but I don't do video. They come is very handy, some of the best out there. I suppose you could add them to a video with a parallax effect, espeically if you have other animated elements in the scene. The fusion and digital energy especially would look good in a wide screen shot, say of a space battle, or starship powering up, or some such.

Come to think of it - a magician summoning or spell casting would look great that way too. And it would save resources if you just had a static image instead of trying to animate a particle system to get a less beautiful effect.

And combining a static image of, say, Digital Energy, along with a particle system in a video, would be really powerful. I'm imagining a spaceship or spacesuited figure walking out of an energy field, some of the energy warping around the character. Matching the pattern would be tough though.

In honor of Ron, here's my latest using one of my latest purchases (Light and Shadow, which is handy for spotlights. I'm increasingly dissatisfied with trying to do funky fog/light effects in Iray's engine)

Len, you can't go wrong with Digital Energy, that has a lot of useful stuff in it. I used the fog brushes on my Unlucky Charm book cover below and it really came out well. (Detailed Smoke brushes are also excellent.) The big surprise was how versatile the Angel Dust and Bokeh brushes are. You can do so much with just those two sets. I used Angel Dust for the twinkle on the "m" and the star behind "Black Kat." I've used Bokeh brushes on a few projects and will definitely have them on the cover I'm working on now (hopefully done and posting soon.)

Ron- hugs to you, sending you best wishes and lots of prayers. Get better soon! We need you here!

Here's a work in progress where I used Detailed Smoke, Fog, Bokeh, and Angel Dust to incorporate a DAZ render into a premade book cover (my practice run before I did the one above.)  Only the lamp was there originally. It's not done yet, still learning about typography and want to reshade the people with the Anagenesis shaders, but it's a good start. Couldn't do it without those brushes.

Here's the original cover and mine with the additions.

  • Llynara -  very impressive.

I appreciate viewing your work and responses.

Your postings should motivate many members that read this thread.

Thanks, len! I'm a fairly new user to DAZ and for many years only used Photoshop to retouch photos. Ron's brushes open up entire new worlds for me, and so does DAZ. Both are challenging me to learn much more. I love playing with my 3D Barbies and then painting on them. LOL (I guess it doesn't take much to make me happy!)

A lot of CGI folks get a weird aversion to post work, like it's a 'sign of weakness' to edit renders.

This is a self-defeating and silly resistance.

  • And reading on in this thread, I had to go back and look again - picked up 4 more:

Mud (because who doesn't need muddy heroes?), Detail Smoke (because where there's smoke, there's cool images), Light & Shadow (as detailed above, it's much easier to do some of this in postwork), and Particles (because cool).

The great thing is I'm already getting ideas of images to make with them all smiley

I actually find postwork very relaxing. There's so much you can do, and for the most part, it's all creative.

Silent, you talked me into the Mud! I also grabbed Ripped, Ripped Fabric and Impressions, which has been sitting on my wishlist for a while. I really don't have much more to buy before I own all of Ron's stuff, LOL. I've been slowly working towards that all year! It's fun to have so many brushes and layers to play with! The possibilities really are endless.

Ooh, that's nice, Will! Love the Kraken/Cthulu, and the underwater bathysphere looks great with the light brushes you used. Looks like whoever was in there discovered more than they bargained for under the sea!

  • I think I broke GIMP by adding too many brushes LOL

I've now moved them into different folders and will add them to the brush registry as I need to use them (which will also make it easier to find what I need).

On an additional note - you really do get more than you'd think with these brush sets.  E.g. the skulls brushes come with 'skulls details' which aren't skulls but decorative elements that can be used on all sorts of things.

And another, this time using Digital Light. I'm not... sure I'm using them properly, I'll have to see if I can poke at tutorials. In particular I seem to have trouble achieving that bright glowy look I often see in other images.

Still, I got something like the effect I wanted, so hey.

  • Just watched the tutorial video that came with the particles brushes - very cool cool

Plus, it made me wonder if I could do that in GIMP - so a little searching and I found layer-styles for GIMP (and also learned how to use 'edge-detect' for cool results).

    Always learning new stuff...

Install them in a folder somewhere on your computer then create a shortcut and add the shortcut to your brushes folder. This works in PS and Krita.

Just be sure you apply the brush to a separate layer, where you can then apply other layer affects, masks, gradients, patterns, styles, and so on. With some stock or freebie styles, or manual Fx settings with things like outside or inside glow, you could "bloom" the image to create whatever scale of effect you want.

I did, but clearly I have to experiment more. ;)

  • Just wanted to say that these products are excellent and come in handy in a lot of different situations.

    I've got a ton!

Will, it doesn't look bad at all. One thing that helped me was to match the rendered lighting as closely as possible with the digital energy brushes. That helped a lot, and made the brush effects look more believable.

Here's the raw render vs the final version with postwork side by side. I also added a hue adjustment layer to match the effect (and looks like a saturation adjustment layer too.) I just kept playing with it until I liked it.

You could also try putting a point light in his hand or use one of the rendered effects props such as Serpio for 3Delight- there's a glowing ball in that set that generates a lot of light, then add the brushes for an even cooler effect in postwork: http://www.daz3d.com/soldiers-of-magic-serpio

I'm getting ready to do something similar with Orestes' lightning in an Iray render, I can't find an Iray product that looks as good as Serpio yet (though I just got some of Jepe's stuff and am going to play with those too.) I have LOTS of superheroes to render, so plenty of chances to try all kind of effects both in the renders and in postwork. Will post a few here when I do.
