I can't buy DAZ products anymore, they're all made for DAZ only? I use poser.

It's more likely that I'll buy something with more than duf support, vs something with only duf support.

...and the market forces will engage...  *now*

  • I remeber the big fractures in the marketplace and the vitriol that overwhelmed the forums a few years back when Poser users found themselves transitiion from beiing the target market to the second hand market like DAZ Studio users used to be (and still are to some extent at e.g. RMP). I don't think the forums here have even to this day fully recovered from that.

Anyway, as others have said, that ship has sailed. It turns out that DAZ with their core focus on 3D content has eclipesd Smitrh-Micro, to the point that some people are wondering which version of Poser will be the last one or if SM will try and sell it. Personally, I wish they could get back on track so that DAZ has some competition, but SM has so many products that they can consider abandoning Poser whereas DAZ has every incentive to keep updating DAZ Studio. The results seems inevetable at this point. But if there is any chance, you need to let SM know what features you really need (like G3 support). Think about how much time they wastesd on Poser 11 and that much weaker PBR when Reality + Lux already existed. They really need better focus on what to work on next.

I quit buying stuff from here when it became evident most was going to DS direction...but then I decided I would finally actually learn DS, which I much prefer Poser, but still have not really tried to learn it..seems very complicated compared to Poser.

I would think Poser will become extinct fairly soon if they don't do something unique. Not sure what that would be, though. Obviously you can still be using POoser 3, 4 or whatever and still create some nice looking art ....

Your tools are only as good as your imagination and creativity. Skills.

Programs now rely on purchasing content. When Poser started, P1, it was more as a reference for the human figure, for artists ... much has changed since.

Just avoid DAZ Connect-Only products if you do not want to to be locked-in for 12 months from release date to DAZ.  They identify the DAZ Connect-Only benefit on each product page. Under install types, if it ONLY SAYS Daz Connect then it is restricted. If it says DIM and/or manual install then it is unrestricted.

If I may make a correction, if it states "Encrypted Daz Connect" then its locked to the computer you have DS49 installed on and last connected to your account.  You can use an excrypted item on any computer you own with DS49 installed but it can only be installed on one at a time for the first 12 months.

Daz Connect as a whole is just an easier "fire and forget" system then the DIM for installing and updating content and new DS content is made available through as well as the DIM and manual download.

I had the same issue when i started using DS but I adapted and now its the other way around for me.

This is incorrect.  You can have more than one computer connected to your account, and you can use encrypted content on any of them.

All the products coming out now are for DAZ only.  Why did you guys abandon Poser?

OBJ files are OBJ files, just import them into poser, apply the materials and save it out to the materials library. A few hours ain't going to kill you and you'll make more money.

    Title edited for abbreviated profanity

I agree with you. I'm a Carrara 7Pro user and I really hate the DUF format because I can't use it. Genesis 1&2 don't work in C7Pro and Genesis 3 doesn't work in C8.5Pro.

It really is most annoying during sales.

Especially when you see an item Like...

    http://www.daz3d.com/lucille-zombie-for-genesis-3-female-s

That said, the ship has, unfortunately sailed.

There is another marketplace that has more Poser/OBJ stuff (you know where), but even that place is being infected with DUF.

    Sad.

    Well..
I was an user of Poser PRO 2010 (in the past)..

And many fun with it with Victoria 4!

But, then came the Genesis figure.. Well.. Pain.. Can't work in my Poser PRO 2010 ...
    So.. I had the choice:
    1) Continue to ignore Genesis series.. and using the old stuff in my old Poser PRO 2010
    2) Do the upgrade to a newer Poser PRO version.. (near from $250 USD something in that)..
    3) Purchasing experimental plugins for making Genesis series work (a bit).
    4) Download and install the FREE DAZ Studio ($0 USD) and start to taste the new figures.

Well, (1) was the choice I made during a long time.. But time passed, and older stuff bored me.. I wanted to play with new stuff now!
So.. (2) when compared to (3) or (4) was easy to choose from..

    (4) indeed! Free app, Free figure (Genesis 1, Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 base), many great free or paid assets some weeks from the store, and .. an excellent community.

DAZ Studio was for my part A HUGE improvements in rendering and posing, and now with Iray.. It's even better than before!
I liked the SuperFly render engine, but, now, I'm so happy with my Iray renderer engine, DAZ Studio software, that I learn a lot just from using it or viewed YouTube tutorials made by DAZ.

I want just say a gigantic THANKS to DAZ.
And with recent sales, I also saw that DAZ have some amazing products in store, can we say same from Smith Micro store ?

    Have fun with rendering !

DAZ figures can be used in Poser with a few steps and some work with materials and the like. There are numerous utilities that can help users adopt them.

I'd just like to point out something, in the interest of community spirit:

There is no reason why we, as 3D enthusiasts, can't ask creators to think about creating products for our favored applications. We all benefit from their work in one way or another. Unfortunately, customers of all types get caught up in competitive issues between manufacturers and it's not limited to smartphones, furniture, grocery stores or computer applications.

But, we can still empathize with each other. We can support each other and we can still acknowledge the strengths, and weaknesses, of our preferred hobby products without becoming partisans in a commercial struggle.

Happy rendering, all, no matter what application you like to use!

That's an ideal solution, but you'd be asking people to have to try and figure out two entirely different systems, as from my (admittedly limited) understanding, weight mapping is completely different in both programs. Among other little minute details that could potentially cause problems if you act like your product is a "one size fits all". That's like asking someone who's only familiar with making items in Hexagon to adapt their process to something like Blender or ZBrush: they theoretically could do it, but they'd have to spend even more time re-learning a new program and have to constantly switch between mindsets. And that would also be time taken away from creating things, which... less money earned. But that's mostly for things like clothes and other figure-based items. Props? Ehhh... I could see where an artist could at least try to make .OBJ versions of them, unless they have poses or other special things hidden inside them.

As for me, I've been using DS since 2011 after a (now ex) friend of mine recommended it to me for help in art references (i.e. perspective, scale, lighting). While I've entertained the idea of trying out Poser, the only reason why I think it still has some relevance today is solely because of the way it handles dynamic clothing/hair, which I gotta say, is far better than Daz. (Seriously, I've tried out even freebies and it's caused the program to crash on me) If I knew a certain plug in on a certain other site worked for Mac OS, that would be the only reason why I'd consider buying Poser.

Hell, I'd reckon if Daz stepped up its dynamic clothing game for Studio 5 and really went to town on it instead of salivating at the prospect of pushing Genesis 4/Victoria 8 (and having their dynamic stuff relegated to a small company and less than a handful of artists who actually make DS-native dynamics), then that could very well be the "death knell" of Poser as we know it. Especially given the possible number of DS users out there, too.

People would still use the program, but as the "Poser generation" gets older and older and slowly begins to stop making content for Poser, the younger Daz generation of content creators (and those from the Poser generation who've 'evolved' and adapted, like Ironman13, Aeon Soul, and Arki, to name a couple) will probably take over in due time. In which case, Smith-Micro will probably then put their eggs in the Clip Studio Paint basket (which is actually made by an outside company in Japan; S-M is the English distributor of it) and demote Poser alongside one of their other lesser known programs. I know to some bringing actual age into this is harsh and hitting below the belt and I'm sorry if it comes off as such, but that's part of the reality here.

But just because something isn't popular anymore or widely used by new adopters, doesn't mean it'll go away entirely: after all, in the video gaming world, there's still people who make homebrew games for old consoles like the NES, Genesis, and Sega Dreamcast. There'll still be people out there making content for Poser, but at the rate the market is evolving, it'll eventually be hard to come by. I mean, heck, even certain other marketplaces have realized Daz is rapidly taking over a huge chunk of the market and have adapted accordingly. Like any niche business, it's 'evolve or die'. Business 101, basically.

From what I've heard the fault is Smithmicro's. Daz was willing to work with them so they could make Poser compatible with Studio files and Smithmicro told them to go pound sand down a rat hole. So we end up with Daz Studio which can use both Poser files and Daz Studio files and Poser which can only use Poser files.

Heh, I seem to recal Nintendo saying the same thing to Sony back in the day. I wonder what happened after that...

As a content maker who made a ton of stuff for poser back in the day, I can say there really is nothing appealing in poser from the perspective of making content.

The quality of final product cannot come close to the quality I would expect of myself to put out in a product. I cannot make the HD details that I can in d/s, the figues can't pose as well as they do in d/s, the clothes and hair and such do not fit as well as they do in d/s. The material options through iray in d/s are so much better to work with.....and d/s has all the tools built in to make characters to a particular level of professionalism that you cannot get in the other program.

Back in the day poser was cool, I loved it, but there really is no longer any appeal to it anymore

"Props? Ehhh... I could see where an artist could at least try to make .OBJ versions of them, unless they have poses or other special things hidden inside them."

So far I managed to get every "DS only" scene I have into Poser. If the scene doesn' t transport every item at the right place in Poser one has to load them in DS and there doing some work: unparent (!) every item! So you have a scene in DS where everything is unparented but still at the right place. Save everything as a scene .duf and create a Poser Companion File from that. This one loads everything at the right place in Poser. Ok, it's a lot of work and time consuming (additionally the MATs need some tweaks but 3dlight's MATs are a good start) and you still have no OBJ files (I have to admit I don't care if there are OBJ or DSF files) but if one really needs a decent detailed scene that can only be bought as a DS only product one should give it a try.

And I guess if SM doesn't change something about the sluggish library and indexing nonsense in Poser Pro 11 or Poser's usability for 3rd party content I really want to use (yes, Genesis 3 is usable in Poser and even with some minor limits it still looks better than the SM figures or Dawn/Dusk etc. that's the sorry truth) I also have to learn DAZ Studio because I really like the Iray renders I see here and the "DS only" content at least offer complete render-ready scenes in 3delight or Iray which makes it easier to learn.

But my main wish is that both softwares merge somehow into one. Give me please the GUI of Poser but with DS's tabs and style options, DS's animate, Iray and Genesis figures, Poser's python, material room (with a conversion tool for 3dlight and Iray mats) and fitting room. In the end both sides would benefit.

You know, I think you indirectly pointed out another reason why Poser is slowly losing its relevance: the high definition factor.

The fact Daz Studio has Iray rendering capabilities, which will become an industry standard (if it isn't already) was another big factor in securing Daz's meteoric rise in the market. Yes, not everyone is interested in or can afford shelling out for new computers that can run Iray (and as an iMac user, I can't really do it unless I got another PC tower that could handle it. And given I want to try 3D modeling in 2017, well...), but Iray is where the market and interest is going. Look at all the new products from certain content creators that are Iray only.

And I have to admit, the Daz Studio "Iray" look with the most basic of HD add-ons and Iray lighting/textures can even make the most Poser-y of "Poser Art" look above average in quality. (That's right, I went there, lmao)
