This is using just the sky and moon, no TD3 :)
I do have TD3 I didn't use it though...
[Andrew] This was one I did to see if I had to have TerraDome3 loaded too. This is just lots of Faverals medieval buildings and a TerraLuna3 scaled up to 400%. This is using the day rig moon with the DayMoon-Pale material. The sky is (I think) Dawn Sky 1, turned round by 180 degrees. The ground is from the Medieval Construction site in the foreground, and not now visible, there's also ground from the Medieval Docks.
Really quick one not using TerraDome 3 either.
I'm also having problems with this, and would like to see a tutorial as well.
Thanks Bee. I've already looked at that other product, but I like this one better. I always appreciate your posts. For example, I looked at the O'Bannion Bridge thread right after I purchased the product, only to realize in horror that it was possibly an IRAY-only product. Happily, as your post showed, it was not the case. It actually renders very nice in 3DL.
OK, I appreciate the straight answer. I just wish that more vendors would SPELL IT OUT IN PLAIN ENGLISH on their product pages.
And, I appreciate your willingness to consider making a 3DL version. If a vendor wants to only make product for IRAY-only - and labels it accordingly - then fine. But even so, it still gets a little frustrating when a product looks terrific, and appears to be exactly what I want, and then I notice the dreaded "For IRAY" fine print.
If it could be used in 3DL, I would have bought it yesterday. Then again, I suspect that IRAY is where the money is at these days.
Pardon me if I make some posting errors. I'm just now learning how to post here. This is my second go-round with DAZ. I updated from 2.3 to 4.9 a couple of months ago, and I haven't posted since way before the forum changed.
Probably 3/4 of content that's Iray-only can work in 3DL, with a varying amount of effort. The remaining amount either relies on specialized shaders (which isn't that common, at least not yet), or finely tuned HDRI/lighting, or there's a lot of stuff that's just a real pain to convert (like stuff where you have to tweak several hundred surfaces).
The thing is, a lot of folks who have either gone full Iray or come in with Iray do not have complete mastery of 3DL, either because they never learned it or they're out of practice. The effort to sustain 3DL is a cost that's arguably not worth it.
That said, there are folks like me who will madly try to make stuff work in 3DL to trail-blaze. ;)
I mean, frankly, there's WAY more 3DL stuff that won't work in Iray:
Dirt shaders, grass and moss, projection shaders, everything in PWEffects, ...
The problem is that it would frequently be a full book that they have to spell out and that actually tends to scare away more customers than it attracts. As Will said, most things that are labled Iray only WILL work in 3DL with some work, but it's analogous to the old situation where products that were labled Poser only even though they could be used in 3DL with some tweaking. The thing to remember is that all of the current Poser/DS content stores have to word their verbiage so that they're not making promises that they might not be able to keep, especially if that reason is dependent on the customer's relative skill level. I think nothing of converting a product from poser or 3DL to Iray... and to their credit, DAZ has made the 3DL to Iray path extremely simple... but going from Iray to 3DL is often a much more vexing issue and will probably remain so until some clever PA comes up with a quickie Iray to 3DL converter.
Also... let's not forget that many of the RDNA vendors never dealt in 3DL in the first place, so their priority is almost certainly going to be mastering Iray rather than trying to pick up a third system at the same time.
Hi Will. I have been paying attention to your recents posts about this subject. Many thanks for posting the step-by-step tutorial for getting IRAY stuff to work in 3DL. I saved it as a Word document several days ago.
The funny thing is, I actually LIKE the quality of 3DL. I certainly am not a master - far from it - but it still amazes me. Yes, IRAY can look great, but 95% of the IRAY renders I see posted on the forum look unremarkable to me. I think that people are mistakenly believing that technology will make up for weak artistic skills. However, probably not the spot to take up that old argument.
Can't agree with that one, sorry. :-)
And I am grateful!
Well, there's a lot of stuff I'm interested in that might not be financially viable for people to make. I still hope they do anyway. ;)
Great to see the renders....
@Scorpio...just beautiful! You have a great eye for composition...
I'm loving this product but would love to see something that explains how to use it better.
I haven't had much of a chance to play, but a tutorial would be useful.. I didn't see a link to one or a manual.
That is one cool looking product, got a question for you though. What are the chances of you porting the settings/styles to TL2 at some point? I would love to have things like the day moons but I use poser :(
Another render...still needs some work as I'm still learning how to use emmissive lighting. Is there anyway to get like a shimmer or haze around the moon figure? Sorry this one is a bit grainy still and needs more time or something.
Cannot get this to work. Tried clicking on control, then using parameters. Tried clicking on luna, then luna light, and using parameters. Nothing working. Don't need a video to explain. Would appreciate a simple, old-fashioned PDF. Grump. Grump.
Have you guys seen this:

It's very striking.
Cheers,
Alex.
I've been purchasing far more items (due to the sales) than actually learning how to use them, due to lack of time in my life. I'll be getting TerraLUNA3 today, in spite of the fact that I'm still trying to learn to work with 3DL. Plus, my computer would be far too slow for my goal of animating, if it were to be with iRay. So I'm wondering:
UnifiedBrain mentioned that Timmins posted a step-by-step tutorial for getting IRAY products to work in 3DL. Where is it? Is it the forum titled "Iray to 3Delight?" of last June? I see good info there, but if he posted a specific tutorial somewhere, I'd love to find it. And thanks, Timmins, for all the useful info I've gathered from you over time in your various forum posts.
Well, it's not super complicated. Ctrl-click on UberSurface or similar shader, to get most everything copied over.
Bump may need to be reduced. Normal might not make it, and both might be flagged off, so you should flag them on. Double check, if there's displacement, that 'trace displacement' is on (this isn't applicable if you are applying Daz Original Shader or most other 3DL shaders)
The big problem is Opacity. The map never seems to survive conversion, so you need to pay attention and set it. If you are dealing with stuff with a lot of transparencies, you may want to make a duplicate of the original just to remember what goes where. This is one of the big things I'd love to see in a conversion script.
Specular might transition right. If you are getting a result of Glossiness 100%, pure white Specular Color, and Specular strength 100%, or all of that is 0%/black, it probably didn't do it right.
Guideline (and this is good for 3DL generally):
Glossiness 5-30% for most regular stuff (rocks, fabric, skin, hair, dirt, etc). Oily skin MIGHT be higher, sometimes. High gloss is for very wet stuff, ceramics, metals, etc.
Specular color and Specular Strength follow the same trend, really; specular color for most non-metals should be dark to medium gray.
A lot of 3DL content isn't set up this way, but if you want to follow a more 'physically based' approach, I recommend it. That and you can probably just select every surface in the scene, set it to 15% glossiness, medium gray, 25% specular strength and get results that are at least passingly right.
If you want realistic 3DL metals without using special shaders, an easy approach is to simply use Reflection (ideally in Ubersurface, so you can make sure it's Raytraced). Iray Glossiness would then roughly correspond with Reflection Blur (0% being perfect reflection/glossy, 10% being the usual metal glossiness, etc). You can then set reflection color to do the funky reflection effects many metals have.
This isn't completely realistic, but it's pretty darn close. (I think US' Fresnel settings might be useful for more realistic metals, but I get nowhere trying to play with them)
OK, thank you timmins. This gives me a bit more hope. Something to aim for in a study plan. It's been too easy to get diverted by new things when I've barely learned to deal with the old. And then there's the busy life in general...
Thanks again!
The most depressing thing for me has been the realization that many of the products I've been buying will not be usable for animations because they're supposedly iRay-only products. That hadn't sunk in until after a few hundred dollars of purchases. Anyway, thanks again - and now time for me to regroup. Again.
Can someone please explain to me how to move the moon around the sky? I would like to look up the read me but unfortunately, I can't access it at the moment it can't load my user data thing going on. I have tried the move utility, using the x y and z control, done a couple of back flip and a rain dance or two and I still can't figure out. I'm sure its staring me right in the face...
The easiest way I found is to just load the "TL3 !TL3 Night Rig" prop. Then select the TL3Control node which will be in the center of your screen 0,0,0.
Then just use Y rotate and X rotate in your parameter tab to rotate & elevate the moon where you want it.
Shift-click the whole scene tab, shift-click the whole surfaces tab. Apply default Iray shader. Render. All bets are off with the PW stuff. I remember those being in a world of their own. Awesome shaders.
Great thanks!
(Andrew) I'm really sorry this has taken a little longer than expected, RL threw a spanner in the works, quite a big one. Well, three actually, one after another over two weeks...we so need a holiday...
Please excuse any incoherent burbling, it took over 40 attempts and some creative editing to get even this. Leant a lot of stuff in doing this, so next time will be better. :)
I bought this the minute it got released ,but haven't had time to play with it yet.
I think you did a great job on that video! The instructions are very easy to follow and understand
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Just remember to clear all your skydome and environment settings before use or they conflict! Once you've sussed that, this is a lovely product!
Do you have an Environment Map set in the Render Settings? What is the Environment Mode set to?
Nevermind, didn't realize there was a video above. Will watch that and see if I can get it working. A read me would be really nice for this product.
Updated: My issue was a bad install. I uninstalled and reinstalled and now the product is working as it's supposed to.
