So I can add an SSD and shave the load time, but not the working or render time.
Or I can add another video card, and shave the render time a bit, but not help the larger scenes.
Or add more system memory and... affect nothing.
Oh, well. Money saved.
SSDs have dropeed a lot in price...so while it may not shorten render times, it will save time in other areas. As long as the scen fits on the card, then yeah, that's true...but if it doesn't, then you would be wanting as much system memory as possible.
Well, I don't hit the GPU memory wall very often, so I guess I'll buy that 32" monitor to replace my 24".
Won't speed anything up, but it will look coooooolllll...
I'll take that 24" to replace my 19"...my son has all the cool 'toys'...
96 cores and 1 Gb of ddr3 video ram, I plan to replace it with a Radeon card. It's a good thing I don't plan to do Iray renders
Is that good mjc?...it doesn't sound like it compared to what others are showing....It's an i7-3820 CPU 3.60GHZ 32 GB Ram in an Antec P193
.really don't know much about this stuff but it hasn't had a any problem rendering large and complex scenes....so far;)
Naw. The 24 will be replacing the 21 on my video editing computer, which will replace the 19 on my Linux internet computer.
I got the same card as Richard recently, a 750 Ti (with 640 cores)
Had an opportunity to compare it directly to the 550 Ti (with 192 cores) that it replaced... ...the 750 Ti is slightly slower!!!!!!
In general the CUDA cores have been getting slower and slower, as Power and Temperature saving are overiding factors.
They've been compensating by throwing lots more cores on the cards but they only ever add enough to be 'just' faster than the previous generation.
...or in my case, slightly slower than a card 2 generations older.
If we could go back to the GTX 480, with a few thousand of those cores, and added memory, we would have a card with around 5 times the CUDA performance of a Titan X.
Obviously it would run at around 6000 Watts!
I thought having multiple video cards didn't help Iray?
I just picked up GTX 970 4gb 1664 cuda cores from Fry's for $269. I haven't installed it yet but it's supposed to be compatible with my motherboard. Fingers crossed, something always seems to go wrong.

Multiple Nvidia cards will help Iray provided they all have enought memory to load the scene. They won't be XX as fast, but 2 "identical" , .e.g. 980ti will be quite a bit faster, once the scene is loaded, than one.
Multiple cards do help Iray and it does scale very well. I have 4 cards and my render time reflects that. Render time goes down from 60 seconds to about 20 seconds. The problem i have is I have mixed cards, a 780, 980ti and titan Z. So the cards slow down to match the slowest card, in my case the titan Z.

I have two GTX 980s (2x2048 CUDA Cores) and a GTX 980 Ti (2816 CUDA Cores), so 6,912 CUDA Cores altogether.

Both but clock speed is important as well. If you can safely overclock your card you can get better performance out of it. The 980TI base clock speed is only 1000 MHz. The Zotac AMP Extremes run around 1400 MHz. They are the best 980TIs out of the box. Awsome for gamming too!
My 19 is on a Linux box too...how strange. My son's 27 is on a Windows machine...of course.

384...same as "shaders". Not really CUDA cores tho because AMD's don't have CUDA
MSI GTX 970, 4GB 1664 cores - the one with the twin fans and the Ferrari red trim. I also have a 2GB 730 but this is only allowed the talk to my monitor, it's never allowed to play with Iray. Once the drivers are sorted out, I'm upgrading to a 1080.

My desktop has a GTX460 (336 cores and 1GB memory) so I don't use it, I render only CPU but my new notebook has a GTX 980 (not 980M) with 2048 cores and 8GB!
I answered you in your other thread. Unfortunately, you should have saved yourself the money at least as far as Iray is concerned. It's not going to benefit you any,
