Yes, I'm surprised the promo renders were so bad if Thorne was involved. Thorne usually does amazing promos. It must have been someone else.
I don't think the product renders are bad, but what they do show about Julie is that her base pose/expression has a little wisp of a smile on top of those overly wide eyes, to the end effect that just rendering her straight tends to result in her having a bit of a vacuously happy expression. Of course, if you spend much time around teens and tweens you know that look isn't one you normally see unless they're on some kind of "medication", but it's easy enough to adjust with a few dial spins and brings out a lot more personality.
Hmm. I've got one more test - the default Tween Julie and the default Teen Josie side by side for a straight comparison - but the forum's not allowing me to upload it. I accidentally try=ied to send the full size image first, so maybe my queue is full? Mods?
Finally got it up on a gallery, but it still won't show up here. FIXXED! Straight side by side render of default Teen Julie 7 and default Teen Jose 7. I definitely get a "sister" vibe from them, but they're certainly not clones.
...seems Julie looks a little more "filled out" in the hip/pelvic area while Josie looks thinner Maybe it's just angle would like to see them in identical poses.
Yeah the breast sizing issue is one that stops me as I tend to use a character for different age groups including preteen.
Here's what I did with Josie and the Growing Up Morpths for G3F to create a preteen.
It's not that Josie 7 is filled out as much as that Julie 7 is more uniformly thick across her entire torso, with very little indentation around the waist, coupled with the fact that Josie 7 has is stretched much taller vertically and has a lot of muscle definition in the stomach region.
Just did a quick comparison of all the official teens/young teens/tweens.
This is definitely the best young one since the original Julie, though I have to second everyone who's asked what's up with her lips.
Has anybody notice her thumbs are messed up. At least they are when I load her. None of the other characters I have have this issue I would show and example, but I'm in the middle of render!
OK....I have some screen shots of what I am talking about. I have done nothing to Julie to change or modify Julie's rig.
I've checked all my other characters in my library and Julie is the only one that has this problem
Did you see the weird green and lines in the eyes? QT must have been on vacation or something, I've noticed some pretty odd things going on with some of the product promo renders lately.
I didn't buy her, so I can't try it. You'd better submit a help request. It looks like the rigging is wrong.
I planned to, but wanted to see if anybody else is having the same thing before I did. The more people that submit a tickets, the more likely it will get fix, apposed to just one person submitting a ticket.
I haven't seen that my self as of yet. It could be a 3Delight render issue? I use Iray for all my renders, haven't used 3Delight in about a year or so.
Nope. She doesn't do this for me, either when loading from the character preset or when applying the shape to the base G3F. I installed via DIM,
hmm, OK... well I manually installed her. I may have to un-install and re-install her?
Thanks. I was hoping I wan't the only one!
Interesting, thanks. I love comparison shots!
I don't know if I agree with the statement since it's hard not to be the best young one since the last Julie when she's the only young one since then. The teens are designed to be teens and are mostly pretty good at that.
I think she's pretty good overall - however the lack of the custom breast settings (default zero and then multiple custom breast sliders) the way Julie 5 had severely limits her functionality.
Looking at the comparison reminds me she has that same unfortunate texture look that Josie 6 had which was why I never bought Josie 6. I can't even explain what it is exactly, but the textures both have this same not quite right feeling to me. Then again I just fired up Josie 7 and realised that despite how nice I think she looks overall, her skin material is very sallow brown 'Victoria 7' looking by default.
That is adorable! Love her! Now that makes me even more on the fence about Julie because I do have Josie and Growing Up morphs... Both Josie and Julie 7 are very cute but too stylized to look realistic to me. I have tons of fairy/stylized characters and morphs already going as far back as gen 3, I would like to see a more realistic teen/preteen/child. The G3 adults can look photo-real if posed and rendered to be so, but I still haven't seen truly photo-real teens or children. Even the growing up morphs look a bit stylized to me. It seems that all the younger morphs/characters are almost too cute to be real with big eyes and button noses. Adding a bit of Josie's morph to G3 makes the head get larger, the eyes farther apart and bigger and the face immediately starts to look toony to me. I'm wondering if Julie 7's morphs do the same thing. Julie 5 has a more realistic face, but Genesis 1 figures as a whole don't look very realistic to me... Funny, I never even used to care about realism and Photoshopped characters to look LESS real and hand painted until I started with DS and Iray in March.
It's a common problem for a lot of textures; dialing it down is easy enough, and also it's worth checking if the shader is still 4.8. or 4.9; in TJ's case it has been updated I noticed when just loading it in; last time I used the textures they were still set to 4.8, but that is also easy enough.
@lx "Then again I just fired up Josie 7 and realised that despite how nice I think she looks overall, her skin material is very sallow brown 'Victoria 7' looking by default."
Here are 2 Josie 7 renders with the default "all maps" skin. HDRI lighting. No adjustment of anything. Looks pretty good to me.
Is this the tone you see?
Tried this and got the same results as the OP. Looking in the joint editor, the thumb bones are being rotated very heavily on the X-axis.
Yeah that's the same as what I get. The texture is fine but the colour feels a bit desaturated for me (of course this is just opinion; I'm not trying to say Josie is a bad character. She's actually one of my favourites, I just rarely use her skin because the oldest Genesis 3 characters all seem to have those same settings hence all the complaints people used to make.)
Looking at some more renders of Julie I think my issue with her texture is that the eyebrows are very distinctly done, but since they're a texture they're completely flat. I don't know if there was ever a good or at least realistic solution to this, it's just what I think when I look at it. I think that Julie 7 looks more related to Josie 6 than 7.
Basically I don't think these are issues with character creation just my reception to them.
The lack of morphs that Julie 5 had is an objective downside though.
p.s. I also have the thumb bounding box issue on Julie 7.
It had been months since I looked at TJ7; I had to adjust the character's shader to 4.9.
The super-tanned look can be manually dialled down, but I adjust things further.
Oh I know you can adjust things and I pretty much always do - it was just an idle comment on testing her default mat out again.
Here's a random Julie + Julie in adjusted Aiko skin.
Submitted a help ticket on the thumb issue. In the meantime here's a fix to get them working:
1) Locate the Tween Julie data folder (this will depend on your install method. For Connect users, this will be in My Library\data\cloud\1_23504\data\daz 3d\genesis 3\female\morphs\daz 3d\tween julie 7. For DIM/Manual users, it will be in My Library\data\daz 3d\genesis 3\female\morphs\daz 3d\tween julie 7.
2) Locate the file fbmtweenjulie.dsf, and extract it using a zip program like 7zip.
3) Rename the original to fbmtweenjulie.bak, then open the extracted file in a text editor. This is where the fun begins.
4) In the text editor, do a search for the word lthumb1. We want the block that matches this:
"output" : "lThumb1:/data/DAZ%203D/Genesis%203/Female/Genesis3Female.dsf#lThumb1?orientation/x",
"operations" : [
{ "op" : "push", "url" : "Genesis3Female:#FBMTweenJulie7?value" },
{ "op" : "push", "val" : 27.1542 },
{ "op" : "mult" }
5) Change the value 27.1542 to 0.1542.
6) Repeat step 4, searching for lthumb2, lthumb3, rthumb1, rthumb2, and rthumb3. In each instance look for the code block similar to the one above (they all say orientation/x) and change the double-digit number to 0.
7) Once all of the changes are complete, save the file as a dsf (or save it and rename it to dsf). Load up Tween Julie and enjoy her now fucntional thumbs!
It's a good thing it's not encrypted content or this would be impossible!
Ha,,,so it just no me.....
Thank god, in a way, lol!
But yeah, your right. It's the x axis. plus the thumb base is off, Kinda the x/z axis.
I submitted a ticket for this alreay. I suggest you do the same. The more tickets, the more likey it will get looked into and fixed!
Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, she does seem to have a 10 yr old's face/head on a 14-15 yr old body...I had to apply 25% of Zev0's GUMorphs for the character to be considered an actual 9-13 yr old meh, no biggie as I detest default settings as a general rule, so yeah, had to deflate the mini-life preservers and adjust the eye forward and give her an actual realistic nose...But still, it's a great base to start!
BTW: In all the decades I've used poser/daz I always rendered Gingers with Brunettes coming up second: 80% Gingers/20% Brunettes, I don't render blondes as they are the default setting for nearly every hair conforming/prop, plus I'm nuts about ginger haired lasses.
There are tons of ginger skins though (and probably about as many blondes, more than I thought til I looked at my library.) Setting the hair to whatever colour is kind of pointless if you don't pick a skin texture that matches (unless you're going for dyed hair obviously.)
