Brows

I was eyeing Oh My Brows morphing fiberhair eyebrows at the other store  and I was wondering if anyones got it? I've been desperately looking for ways to make a Thranduil character and his eyebrows are his most dominant characteristic. This could be perfect! Can they be morphed to something resembling him you think?

I looked at them. I'm not sure about how they will look. Promo art is difficult to gauge. They aren't too expensive so I'm sure someone will buy them. I always have an issue with hairs looking too large with fibermesh. But we'll see what others say.

I know, that's a problem. I really need them for closeups so I hope to see some more images first :)

I've been eyeing them too but my concern is will the painted on eyebrows show through them?

  • seeker273seeker273 Posts: 449

In the brows-no brows promo I can still see some of the painted brows. I don't see how it could be helped. Perhaps some photoshop on the texture would be in order first.

Photoshop them off. I've actually been disliking a lot of gen 3 mens brows lately. They are too thin, arched and diabolical. They look like Divine's.  I actually like less arch and a more friendly benign looking eyebrow. I can always make them sinister via expression. This might be the way to remove those weird lowering eyebrows.

To get the brows that straight, you'd need to turn off limits on some of the parameters, and you'd definitely need to use an underlying painted brow that more or less follows the hairline, or they wouldn't have the fullness you require. Even so, you won't get that degree of bushiness with these, as they just aren't modelled that way. Here's a very quick example, G3M with Michael 7 skin (as his brows are dark and fairly straight).

You might get closer to what you want using Look at my Hair or Garibaldi.

The underlying brows will show through, so you're always going to get the best result if you're using a colour that's not too far off the original, and darker brows tend to look better than light, I think because natural blonde brows are generally sparse and fine. These are best looked upon as a tool for adding some realism to existing brows or change the colour enough that it doesn't jar with the hair colour. Hope this helps.

The brows you made look really good, even if they can't help me with Thranduil. Thank you very much for taking the time to help out Redz :)

My wife can take all manner of unrealism in her B-movie fix, but if a blonde walks on with dark eyebrows, it's beyond the pale!

  • But...there are many blonde women who naturally have dark eyebrows.

I've noticed that too. It's funny how often I see real-world things that I'd have written off as unlikely or unnatural if I'd seen them in the store or in a render. Somewhere in the store there is a tree which I always thought had branches that were placed more like something you'd see in a kid's drawing than something you'd see in real life, but I spotted one round the corner from us that looked just like it not so long ago, and it didn't look one bit out of place or abnormal either. We're probably too critical of ourselves (and each other) over some of this 3D stuff.

I will forever shill Laticis Imagery's free fibermesh brows. You can adjust the thickness and they take any color(I used unshaven 2) very well. I make a habit now, of photoshoping off the painted on brows on g3m characters and using these. I thew them onto the default Eddie skin. The thickest setting would probably work well for Thranduil. :)

Here are the brows. I kept them dark because I didn't bother to clone the brows out undernneath and I'm partial to dark haired people in general ;). There are a lot of morphs to adjust these, including making the brows thicker, both in hair and in width. The only thing it's missing maybe is a morph to make them really bushy and wiry for things like mountain men, wizards, mad scientists, etc. Other than that, I like them a lot.

The beard is Laticis Imagery's Whiskers for G3M, the hair is Laticis' freebie Really Short Hair for Genesis 2 Males and all of them have shaders from Mec4D's Unshaven 2 for G2M.

I've got them; I have some I made myself, but these for the price are amzing; no renders yet. Amazed it's taken so long for someone to make a set.

This is just a quick comparison I threw together of Kimo 7 with and without brows (the Kimo 7 brow wearable preset with no adjustments) using his default iray texture with brows. I may try tests with removing the painted on brows on some point. The brows comes with many morphing and adjustment options. Both G3M/G3F brow products are very well thought out, IMHO.

The brows look really great, they're well worth it!!!

Thanks zombietuggerung, I'll try my luck with Laticis one's as they look closer to what I'm going for :)

Wow, great thread and thanks to the OP for starting it; I wouldn't have found out about Oh My Brows otherwise and got the bundle angel

Here's a test with Olympia 7 and George:

Before I found out about OMBG3F I did a render with Lacitis's Brows for G2F which have been my go to fibermesh brows (I use G2 mostly blush )

Here are Lacitis's Brows on Imari, along with Lacitis's Really Short Hair and ThePhilosphers Peach Fuzz! Facial Vellus Hair for Genesis 3 Female(s)

The test of Imari was a G3F version of the test I did to see if Peach Fuzz would work on a G2F character.  It did laugh  Same brows and Really Short hair:

Lacitis's Free Fibermesh Brows for G2M are great although they didn't work for a character I designed for a space opera book series, probably because the morphs are too extreme for the G2M parameters broken heart  I despaired of ever finding fibermesh brows for the character but some months back Fisty&Darc and Fred Winkler Art released FW Alfred HD which was not only a hunkalicious character but also had fibermesh brows, moustache and beard.  They worked perfectly.  I had to photoshop the orginal brows of the skin because they were stretched something awful, even in a medium shot.  And I would up using 3 different beards for volume wink

And I also used Lactis's brows for the character's wife:

Whew!  Sorry for the long reply and I hope it proves useful to somebody, some day... blush

One of the challenges I see wtih fiber mesh brows is that they stand out. Perhaps it is the coloration, or the fact that they are now a model, but they seem to be the more 'noticiable' than I think they should be.. Real brows tend to blend into the face a bit more. Perhaps the colors need to be lighter or more variable or even slightly transparent.

At any rate, these are some of the nicer demonstrations of brows I've seen.

Thanks for the tip about Alfred! Marius also has fiber brows, though I vaguely recall finding the individual hairs too big. Will Oh my Brows fit to Genesis 2 without looking terrible?

They won't work for Genesis 2 sadly. Although they autofit to the base female, some morphs cause distortion, but the real difficulty is that they won't follow G2 expressions.

Blah. Thanks. At one point I used to roll my eyes at people complaining about vendors moving on from Genesis or even V4. Welp, now I'm eating crow and feeling the same pinch. :)

Lacitis's Free Fibermesh Brows are made for genesis 2 though, so that's some consolation I hope. :)

Oh I use that all the time, was just hoping for more options.

I've found using the bump, spec etc and only removeing the brows from the diffuse texture, then reducing the hairs on the prop gives good results in tests. Still testing though

I use cutout opacity on them (it is also useful for tweaking the shader of the hairs), this allows for reducing the prominence of them.

Just saw these and I think I want them. What is the best way for removing the painted brows in photoshop? Should I just cut and paste skin from the area surrounding the painted brows?

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085
Personally I just focus on skins that don't have eyebrows, like Skin Builder, Parris Macroskin, and a few others.

I think one of the issues is we are so used to seeing painted on brows on textures that anything different from that looks off

..I would use the "clone" and "heal" brushes as it is easier to match the nearby skin tones better. You only have to paint out one brow then you can copy the area and "flip" it to cover the other side.

3DLux, so Does Lactis also have female brows or just male ones for G2?

For now with G2 I have been using Skin Builder Pro which also includes eyebrows though they are flat like the painted on ones.
