Depends on which figure base you're using. There are good ones for Genesis and Genesis2 (the ones FirstBastion mentioned are a good start), but Genesis3 is too new to have more than a handful so far.

Can it be done by tweaking the settings on a character.... to get a darker character?

This character in practice is darker than the promo she has good skin and could be tweaked for Hispanic renders.

  • Have a play with the skin textures in a photo editing software like Photoshop. Just play with hue/saturation :)

It can (exact procedure depends on which program and which renderer you're using), but IMHO it never really looks properly realistic — different actual skin tones change in different ways on different parts of the body. And don't forget you'll need an appropriate face morph.

Yeah. There are some interesting and important differences between certain types of skin. There's a difference between a dark-skinned white person and a light-skinned black person and how their skins look, even if the black person ends up lighter skinned than the white person.

Mind you, you CAN 'move' the character of skin in various directions. Under some circumstances, you can take white skin and shift it to look mixed-race, or a bit asian (from light-skinned Indian to various more easterly regions). You can, similarly, tweak black skins to look like various Indian groups.

Honestly I think this comes more down to facial structure, especially the instant you have anybody with even slightly mixed heritage. and especially asian folks I'm pretty sure if I were to crop some "white" skin and asian skin to remive identifying features, no one would be able to tell which was which.

I mean when it comes down to it its all just melanin. and "race" is a completely made up concept

Yes, but melanin doesn't distribute exactly the same. Some black people, particularly with more direct African lineage, have cooler tones. Others have strong red tones. The distribution of palm vs top of limbs, melanin in wrinkles and folds, varies. Mind you, features count for a lot. When people go out of their way to 'yellow up' Asian skin it's almost always a mistake; I find most Asian skin tones are pretty similar to, say, the variation around the Mediterranean and Europe.

And a lot of people don't realise that Darker skinned people, even those of pure African lineage, actually get paler if they stay in a cooler country for any length of time,  and can then actually get suntanned in good weather, with interesting results. (Tan Lines)

You can check out the Skin builider as well.  You can make your skin any color you want

Hopefully Skin Builder deals with the palm, lip and bottom of feet issue (there are some parts of the body which are pretty much the same color no matter what race you are).  Nothing ruins a texture like dark palms.

HinkyPunk has some excellent darker MR's over at RMP.

I will check for you when I get a chance.

I'm pretty sure skin builder does. It uses four different base skin maps to cover different tones, and then mixes them (among other things).
