Most realistic looking hair in the store for iRay?

Hey guys,

I was curious to know what you thought was the most realistic hair you have come across from the Daz store (for iRay). I am not so much interested in style, as in realism...something that could best pass as a real photograph of actual hair.

Looking forward to your input,

-P

Really depends on what renderer you use also. Most of the hair at DAZ have some form of highlights baked into the textures, which is unrealistic when using an unbiasd renderer such as Lux or Iray. Also many hairs at DAZ don't have enough geometry and you can see the kinks in the mesh which kills the realism IMO. I still think Wild hair (which is no longer sold) is one of the better, more realistic hair products around. Kouros and Alpha hair from SAV at Rendo are fairly realistic looking.

Real Short Hair and Omri hair and a few others are fibermesh (or similar), so they look a lot more realistic than a lot of transmapped hair. That said, some transmapped hair is pretty darn nice. I like Xylia hair.

Good point. I will clarify that my question is for iRay only.... and, for me I don't mind whether highlights are baked in. I am mostly interested in final asthetic appeal, rather than whether it conforms to the numbers.

Sorry, you said "most realistic" and baked in highlights is very unrealistic in unbiased renderers since the highlights come from the material settings and the lighting. Maybe you should reword it to most asthetically appealing which is a very different thing

I personally prefer Goldtassel hair products above any other. Maybe the colors are not the most natural ones, but they render great in Iray and are quite cheap too :P.

With the number of IRay hair shaders available (Slosh's here, OOTs on Rendo, etc.) you can work around this.  You end up just using the original geometry and transmaps and replace the textures with IRay optimized ones.

For me the look depends on the pose, because no matter how effective the shader Daz hair makes it extremely difficult to get convincing poses except where characters are standing upright or sitting upright with the more simple poses.

The more dynamic the pose, the more time-consuming the hair is.

  • My 2 cents: Colin Hair

    Daz Originals goldtassel

    Compatible Figures:

    Genesis 3 Male

Realistic from any angle - styled in a realistic and timeles fashion. It's not long so it's versitle for all poses - works on guys and girls. Looks good right out of the box and even better after post.

And this is http://www.daz3d.com/cybele-hair-for-genesis-3-females just out of the box with sun/sky lightning only. Convergence at 20%, but it's quite good already.

I concur. I think the morphs the hair comes are the most important. I add my own materials and can always add a geometry shell for extra depth, But for stuff like adding movement or making sure it sits int the right spot on the figure, if its not included I have to export to blender, and at that point I might as well just create blender hair instead.

True and I did check it out, but the gallery here is very cumbersome, hard to navigate and also PG13. I had to turn off/enable several filters for it to load in FF. I just figured I would ask if the artist had one at DA or another site since I liked the style, composition and subject matter of the posted images here.

  • Tell you what - I'll set up a DA account - seems like everyone else has one. Thanks for the tip friends.

Not everyone else has a DA account I can assure you.

No matter what hair you use, this will make it looks its best in Iray - http://www.daz3d.com/uht-hair-shaders-for-iray - Even older poser hair looks good with those in Iray.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085

Yeah, I use UHT hair shaders on pretty much every hair. (I use Unshaven 2 on fiber-like hair, but I only have a few of those)

  • I also use UHT shaders for some of my renders - very good value considering it works across all hair including pre-iray and does look great - pretty much all the time. of course the hair model/figure remains an issue in many cases. Long hair not obeying the laws of gravity for all potential poses. If I see a promo on the daz store showing versatal hair, I'll pick it up just to have the option for later. Been burned on hair in the past - meaning paid money and it doesn't look good at all, from any angle.

  • Also meant to say thanks to Gederix, jakiblue, FSMC, chohole and grinch2901 for complementing on my renders. Just scrolled up and saw many mentions in favor of my images. extreamly flattering. :)

  • For the UHT shaders, I'm still unclear on when to use the two different shaders for each color.
