.....Upon reflection, this was probably due to that annoying metallicity bug in 4.8.

I see what you did there......laugh

That was unintentional, but apparently my subconscious is a comedian.

I did another render of The Quiet City, improved a few things.

Hanabi: For what it's worth, for anything but extreme closeups, the standard optimized skin or, better, the IG essentials freebies will do an excellent job.

Most of the skin thread stuff is trying to get that last percent or two of closeup quality, IMO.

The secret to good water reflections in Iray, I'm finding, is metallicity.

I'm sure someone can tell me why that's stupid or terrible and the best way is (equations), but... works easiest for me. ;)

Hah, wow.  I would have never expected that since metals don't let light through.  Right or not, it looks great!

I guess in a weird sort of way, it makes sense.  The general rule of thumb is that if an object can conduct electricity, then you apply metallicity. So unless the water is completely pure, I suppose it would fall in to the conductive category.   Interesting idea, Will.  I'm going to try it next time I need to do a render with water.

Here's one where I went nuts with silly lighting tricks. The scale likely didn't help. Basically I wanted the robot to glow but the scene to be lit by the lightning.

I always wanted to make a 007 homage using the gun barrel intro. This is a test, I whipped up the gun barrel in hexagon, getting it to show up with the rifling inside visible was a lighting and shading challenge. Decent start, now to see if I can find the old James Bond character for M2 I bought years ago...

Saved the gun barrel shot as a png with the center transparant to save time in future. Still sort of noisy but maybe some of you could use it too so here it is.

    Cool 007 homage grinch2901.

Speaking of homages, I saw the Jessica Rabbit dress on sale a week or two ago and had to pick it up.  It's on a G3F figure but autofit worked nicely.  This scene impressed me quite a bit.  There are a ridiculous number of specular materials, and it rendered pretty quickly considering.  I have been using Octane for a while, and while I didn't complete this scene in Octane, from other renders I believe it would have been a lot slower using it.

NIce. I always liked that gun barrel intro for 007!

Man. The hardest thing about this is when you have lots of ideas you want to experiment with, but... 'I got to let this render bake for an hour or two and do something else.'

Mind you, I have a mountain of chores to do, so.

    Edit:

'Ok, whatever you do, Will, try to avoid X, Y, and Z effects, because they slow renders down so much.'

'Oh yeah! X, Y, and Z would look AWESOME! LET'S DO A LOT OF THAT!'

    'Dang it, Will.'

Did you notice you can have a second Daz Studio window open while you're rendering?

I did it by mistake, instead of launching DIM I launched DS.  It was a new instance, while the original instance seemed uninterrupted and the render kept going.  FWIW, I have CPU unchecked in my render settings.

    Whew, finally done.

Behold, Chez Lucille's Hair Salon after a very odd apocalypse. (Running theme of some of my renders)

The only catch is the second instance shares the same temp directory as the first.  One of the Daz team (or maybe Richard Hasletine) said once there is a danger in running two instances because if one closes, it might clean up the temp directory, including files (such as the scene data) being used by the other.  Chaos ensues.

I dunno how risky it is myself.  Normally when I have a render running I'm working on a texture or something else in Photoshop, so I never run two instances of Studio at once.

Will, you've been cranking out some really great stuff.

Aw, thanks. My next big adventure is trying to do modeling.

(I was kind of hoping to get some paying gigs by this point, but it's a very full field)

..really nice. did you use AoA's Godrays?

Yeah for years I kept saying the same about modelling myself, but every time I try, after an hour or two of Hexagon freezing up every ten to fifteen minutes I gave up.

Learned a few new tricks recently on the Hexagon forum that may prevent the above, so soon, "once unto the breach" again.

I have Carrara. While it may not be as hip as a lot of other things, I find it's modeler and general UI reasonably intuitive and logical. There are some clunky elements (like file UI is just... wtf), and it's yet another 32 bit program, buuut... it's pretty darn stable.

Yeah, I have to say, I'm pretty smitten with modeling now.  I did trials of a few of the different apps and ended up settling on 3DS Max.  I took some money I made from some side work and bought a year subscription.  I just couldn't deal with Blender.  I tried, repeatedly, but ended up aggravated every time.   I know people love it, and some swear by it, but it just wasn't for me.  Max has it's own idiosyncrasies, but it felt comfortable and logical.  I liked Zbrush once I figured out what was going on, and I'd like to get it at some point, but don't want to put the cash in to it just yet.

..wow, that's something like 1,400$ for 12 months. I'm just trying to figure out how to come up with the 120$ for a Photoshop subscription.

I have 64 bit CarraraPro but I find the UI for the modeller a bit wonky.  Often have a hard time getting the full screen view to work and only have the little thumbnail window in the lower right corner.

Meanwhile, I'm going to give Hexagon another shot as several vendors here do create some incredible models with it.

Yeah I tended to swear more at Blender than by it.

  • KurzonDaxKurzonDax Posts: 228

yeah, it was just over $1,400.  It was some unexpected money I got from helping a friend out with his networking business, so I decided to splurge.  I did a ton of research, though, before biting the bullet.

...well you have a one year lease on the "Rolls Royce" of all 3D modelling software.  So when can we expect to see products here in the store?

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,088

Oh hey, it IS 64 bit. My bad.

I've been poking a little at 3D coat, it looks nice. But I'm inclined to use what I already have until it starts feeling confining.

Nice work.    Not sure why that person's hand is glowing like that, but probably due to that odd apocalypse.

... not sure if I asked this before, but do you play Shadowrun by chance?

I HAVE played Shadowrun (briefly) and am familiar with some of it. I wasn't explicitly emulating it, but... heh. Street shaman is very Shadowrunny, yeah.
