Maybe it would be best to move this part of the conversation to a new thread, as it seems to be getting a little OT to the RDNA merge.
I understand its a big task to download or backup a large content library, but I'm sure there are plenty here who have a good deal of experience at it and may be able to help with some good ideas how to best achieve a solution that works in your case, even with limited access to resources.
While this little bit has kind of taken us along the border it still pertains to the merger, Which is how will daz handle the already purchased content from RDNA if a PA does not migrate with the rest of them.
I, for one, am interested in seeing how this merger pans out. As a vendor at RDNA, I haven't had the accepted products released just yet, so there may be several things I will have to do to have them accepted and released here. Though I am still waiting to have the Vendor access approved so I can get this figured out, I am cautiously looking forward to seeing how the partnership works.
Looking forward to seeing your stuff in store DM, I follow a few or your character WIP threads.
still waiting to hear !
@Shadowhawk1, Sign up for a gmail email, then you get 15GB free cloud storage (and for $2/Mo that can be upped to 100GB), Dropbox gives you free Cloud storage as well as Onedrive.
Unless one of these services goes out of business, I've got unlimited download of all of my purchased content so far :)
Unless of course you have a crappy internet service that is better know for dropping out than being constant. It takes an average of over an hour to download a 35mb file
Yeah, but you'll still have that issue downloading from Daz or RDNA. I can't remember but I believe those 3 cloud storages I mentioned all have a resume feature if your DL is interrupted though.
I've shopped for digital assets (not CGI, but stuff like ebooks, games, apps) where you were not guaranteed ANY redownloads. In some cases you'd get a temp download for a week or something and if you wanted another copy after that, you'd have to request one from customer service.
Now, as time goes on, indefinite downloads become more and more common -- bandwidth and storage get better and better at an amazing rate.
But there's no great precedent for indefinite downloads.
That said, at this point Daz clearly is expected to provide redownloads for as long as the company exists, but they aren't legally bound to do so. I don't expect that to change.
As for 'extra funds to purchase cloud space,' there are a bunch of services that do it free. And for $6-15 a month, you can have 1 TB from various services (Onedrive, Dropbox, etc) That might be hard for some people, but if you're in the habit of buying almost any content monthly, that's maybe the price of one or two items.
And you are assuming that everyone has an internet connection that allows them unlimited downloading and enough bandwidth to do it.
Do what I often do? Go grab a coffee at a place that has free wi-fi ... and please don't come back saying you don't like coffee or cannot travel to such a place. It is NOT all everyone else's problem - sometimes you have to put a little effort in yourself and try not to be a doom-bunny! :)
What's the difference of downloading an item from your own cloud or someone else's (like Daz or RDNA) cloud? it still takes the same bandwith, still takes the same amount of time.
Shadowhawk1: That's a bizarre response.
There's a complaint made that it's assumed stores allow indefinite downloads. I point out that that's not even close to universal. However, as storage and bandwidth increases, it IS becoming more common. So that's a plus (IE: You can, more and more, rely on the ability to download when you CAN)
Then there's a complaint about the expense of cloud storage or drive storage. Again, both those things are getting pretty cheap, and I point out there are free cloud storage, $6-15 monthly for 1 TB cloud storage from various services, and I'll add that you can get a 1 TB external HD for $50 that weighs all of half a kilo and is the size of a small paperback book.
I don't see where I'm assuming people have unlimited downloading and bandwidth at all. In fact, that's almost the opposite of what I'm saying.
don't forget that Shadowhawk is in Iraq, even if cafes etc with decent internet access were around, it might not be safe to go there.
You wouldn't have to worry about the shop's cloud suddenly missing the item (as some fear will happen in case a second PoserPro-Gate will erupt), or DAZ will go belly up, and stuff.
UUMMMMM .... Simon, I work on a small diplomatic outpost in Iraq. There is no free wifi lie that available.
Many Thanks Richard.
That did the trick for me.

OK Tim, since it seems you were not here for all of this and have not checked past previous posts. My questions are based on making content from vendors that WILL NOT be merging with daz that were purchased at RDNA available now that they are the distributors of said content now. Others started bringing up options and I commented on having limited weight allowances and internet limits. I have a limited download allowance with my internet provider here. I made the comment that some people are on limited expenses and could not afford to buy mutiple hard drives or pay for cloud space. There are some that just outright don't trust cloud storage. I am asking a question that many are wondering about and have chosen to point out the issues with the suggestions being made by others. Until there is an "OFFICIAL" comment by a member of daz I will keep asking and will continue to point out why the answers some here think are the easy answer are not so easy for others.
It was mentioned that the RDNA TOS considers a transaction completed at time of purchase meaning they are under no obligation to host said files and allow downloads after initial purchase. But they do so out of the kindness of their heart. I also believe Daz wants to continue this, however If a vendor does not agree to a move and wants to pull their products and go elsewhere, then I don't think legally DAZ can provide those files and since everything from RDNA is moving to DAZ, RDNA will no longer be hosting them either.
The only options are to either store them yourself via locally or on a cloud, or re-buy them on whatever site the vendor moves to (If they put the item up for sale at the new site)
OK that is part of th eproblem, the daz TOS doesn't state that and since they now OWN RDNA ... the daz TOA should take presidence considering that content is being moved to daz servers and will be available to download here. I am going to continue to ask this not only for myself but for others until I either A) Get an answer in blue and white from someone with daz_ in their name stating what the policy is going to be OR B) get my posts removed and recieve an email from the moderators to stop asking. And I really don't see the second one happening as long as we all stay respectful.
*Shrugs* I get that a lot more than you think, so it doesn't bother me. I don't normally advertise I am in Iraq. I have been here for 11 years so it is more home than the States are right now. The part I found to be the funniest is that I really do hate coffee and much prefer English tea to coffee. I blame working with the English troops that were over here during the main part of this conflict.
Repeatedly asking the same question will not help - it will simply clog the thread with further unproductive debate on what you could or couldn't do, making it harder to deal with any other issues. Daz is aware of the question, and Traveler at RDNA has said there will be notice before any change that will block access (shouldl that be the outcome). I appreciate that this is frustrating and worrying for you, but at the moment there is nothing more to be done so I am going to ask that the topic be dropped until we do have more information.
Shadowhawk1: Aaah, I see the confusion. Several topics going past one another.
I was talking about the general topic of backing up content and other larger topics. The specific issue of 'RDNA is closing up soon and what about all this content I was counting on having access to' isn't what I was referring to.
I also wasn't specifically talking about your situation. Sorry for not being more clear about that.
The DAZ TOS doesn't state that they have any obligation to provide the download files for unlimited time after the sale either.
My guess is that it will be handled case by case between DAZ and the vendors.
No harm no foul Tim, there are several issues that are intermingling here and all seem to end with my point. I am trying to straighten all of them into one main point but it seems that the more I try the more the issue gets confused. I understood what you were suggesting and I apologize if I sounded a little frustrated in my response. You made some good points but when a new 2TB hard drive costs me $150 over here and then there is no way to be sure its not a cheep knockoff that will last a couple of months before going rubber pads up (It has happened) I also have to be conscous of availabe wieght and space when I travel. I am only allowed 50 pounds of checked luggage when I travel and that has to include all my clothing and hygene items as well as personal entertainment. I am allowed another 20 pound backpack, so my computer and hard drives as well as travel orders and documents ... well I am sure you can see what I am dealing with. I also pay $120 a month for an internet that will not promise anything faster than dialup and drops out constantly. So my frustration factor right now is very high, which causes me to get rather vocal on the subject.
I have been asked to drop this for now so I am not going to comment further on this issue, so until I see an official comment from daz ...
Shadowhawk1: Another problem was that I was typing a reply to stuff I was reading on the previous page, but then my post popped right in after something you said, which seemed to make it more of a response.
Got to remember to wrap my statements more clearly. Heh.
And yeah, trying to do internet and tech out there... ouch. I used to game (online) with someone from New Zealand ~10 years ago, where there was a state monopolistic deal with some ISP that was TERRIBLE. She'd just moan about all the struggles to do anything there. I mean, it made US internet look good (and internet here is often terrible).
(Thankfully, NZ's internet is now rather good, from what I understand)
One reason I like cloud storage is the whole concept of having to carry data with me makes me veeeery nervous. I have countless lost files from stolen computers (sigh), boxes of disks that vanish or go bad, etc. But bandwidth... ugh.
You know... one thing I noticed with Mec4D's freebies is that she made them available via Dropbox, which then let me 'save to Dropbox.' That is, I had the option to save her Dropbox file to my Dropbox service without ever having to download it.
I wonder if Daz could do something similar.
*Shrugs* It happens. We only have one ISP here so if I want to talk to my family or be able to open DA or many other sites I have to pay to play so to speak. Of course I could pay $600 a month and have roadrunner like speed if I wanted too, but I can't even come close to affording that. If daz and the other 3D companies offered that option I would consider going cloud based, but until they do I am still in the same boat. This line is taking the post off topic so I am going to sit back for a while and see if someone comes up with an answer before I ask again.
