Stan SMG

The SMG I was most familiar with - the MAT-49 had a grip safety to prevent just that - a odd design to look at, but it did work well.. The folding magazine holder/front grip was rather different, but it did make for a compact weapon if you had to drop with it..

I was very familiar with the Sterling as well as the Canadian Army had them until they were replaced. Due to the fact that they would tend to runn away firing when fired and the only way to stop it was to remove the Mag, the standing joke was cock it and throw in a room for room clearing

You can still actually buy Stern gun kits that you can build in semi auto configuration. I recognized it instantly and reminds me of the Sterling that they use as the base for the E-11 Blaster that Stormtroopers carry in the Star Wars Movies. The set looks to be very well done and I like the fact that they have added new, used and relic. I hope that if the PA's that created this set make others of this type they include the added textures like this one and would like to request they look into a Sterling L2A3 SMG and a possible add on that would make it look like the E-11. yes

Don't confuse a Sten with the Sterling. It's the Sterling Mk 5 that was the base for the Starwars blasters. I carried one (without the cool mods) for nearly 10 years. cool

Edit: Sorry Shadowhawk1; I finally understood what you wrote. So for the others... this is the comparison. blush

My biggest complaint, as a Medic, was, when slung it was at just the right height that when I bent over to tend a patient on a stretcher, the SMG would swing around and clock my patient on the head. Demonstrated that to my Sgt Major, and was issued a Browning 9 mm. smiley

Yes it did to swing around rather easily and hit you where you didn't need it.

At least it was light to do work with working in a Command Post or out in the line

I am what might be considered a collector and have a parts kit for both the Sterling and Stern but have yet had time to put them back together. I am hoping to one day get them back to working versions in semi auto. No worries I almost posted a reply pointing that out before I noticed your edit. :D

I wouldn't think that copywright law would apply to a 3d model of a ww2 gun- I'm sure that is some legal grey area. Certainly Turbosquid has about 20 variations of the sten all called by it's name and selling for more:

    http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/british-sten-mark-ii-3d-model/728416

It does: from April 27 this very year (after I started to model), a Danish company owns the "world wide rights" to any 2D and 3D replication named Sten", the text basically says so, and that they accuired dozens of rights to old WWII guns with the similar rights.

My question is: From whome did they accuire these? I guess someone down the line made a fortune selling rights that they basically doesn't own, but as long you buy from someone who bought and sell it on, it will be "untracable".

Another "fun" fact is that you shouldn't hold it as in the in the movies (which I call Epic pose), but as a real soldier (what I call Combat pose). I read many eye witness statements saying holding in the mag would cause jamming as it would slightly bend in the Mag fixture and the rounds would not enter the chamber correctly.

I do believe that SaskSten here in Canada still manufactures Sten variants and probably would have claims.. You should run up a Lanchester - much nicer to handle and fire than a Sten.. ( and not as much funas a proper Sterling)  Is your Stan Iray only? (which would really be a pity..)

    Cheers

    Harold

The materials are texture based, but setup for Iray, (as it's almost impossible to get great looking metal in 3DL), and those using 3DL, a lot will probably own (as I do), all the shaders needed to turn dull 3DL metals into great looking ones anyway.
