What a shame. I tried 4.9 but uninstalled it because it screwed up my Genx configuration. Not upgrading until Genx works.

I'm pretty new to Daz Studio, so forgive me if this is a stupid question lol But I'm not sure what the deal with encrypted content is? I've seen another post where people were grumbling about it but felt like I was a bit lost and didn't understand the issue. Is it just that it's content that you can't download without 4.9? Or is there also another issue?
Also I noticed that the info page says "Twelve months from the product release date, Encrypted Daz Connect files will be automatically updated to an un-encrypted file." - Is that true?
Well, for alliekatblue, the characters won't work because they are not accessible within earlier versions of DAZ Studio and apparently this person can't use 4.9 due to problems with some plugins. I haven't tried those plugins...so, maybe I should. Hopefully, they are mistaken.
Others have various reasons to avoid the content. For me, I don't want to juggle multiple entry points for accessing content and I have a lot of content that isn't in the SMART content tab and I have spent way too much time formatting my library in a way that I can easily find stuff that I have no interest in doing it again to accomodate DAZ' ideas of how things should be done. They do try to make it work for those of us that use file organization for content, but it's a lot more work than maintaining the files installed by DIM, so it's not worth my time. Products that I have purchased (and I've purchased a few cheapies and freebies) just sit ignored in my account and will do so until DIM sees them.
Probably more common are the ones that see if as being harmful to the end user with little or no real benefits to DAZ. If you haven't read the pages and pages of discussions about this, they can be found somewhere in the forum. Probably look up 4.9 encrytion or DRM or something. You can't hack these files, since they are encrypted, so you can't personalize them (I have done this myself to fix paths of some really old content that kept pointing to My Something or another). Also, if you have multiple computers, they are only useful on the computer that you installed them with. So, you'd have to have multiple spots to store those machine specific files, which is wasteful. Lots of folks use a laptop to set up scenes and then render them with a desktop, and use some common resource for the runtime, and this makes it more difficult to do that.
There are other reasons too, I'm sure.
Oh, and yeah, they have said that they will release the items from encryption only once they have been in the marketplace for 1 year. So, lots of folks plan to just wait until they can be downloaded as normal content before they will make those purchases.
Thanks for the heads up, here's two characters that will not grace my content files!
GenX works just fine of 4.9, my understanding was some people had issues getting it to work when part or all of the content was installed via DAZ Content, rather than via DIM, or manually. It seems GenX could not locate items stored in the new locations. Not sure if the latest update to GenX2 and its plugins was meant to address this.
I have used GenX2 successfully in DS 4.9, but I have not tried it with any content installed via DAZ Connect.
You need 4.9 to install and use it--can't use DIM or any other version of Daz Studio (or Poser) with the Encryped Daz Products. You also can't move the product if you're the type that custom installs contents in an order that makes sense to you, or fix issues on broken products or products not functioning as expected. I let DIM install myself so not moving the content doesn't impact me as much. My biggest issue is when there is a problem with the content, with it encrypted you can't find out just what the issue is and fix it yourself. I've had customer service tell me to install DIM content manually and use it that way when DIM won't install a non-Encypted product and/or the Smart Content Metadata is screwed up--which really is not an answer when you use DIM and Smart Content. I clean up and customize my Smart Content to the nth degree so not even being able to install it through DIM because encryption or the recent upgrade to DIM that suddenly disallowed ampersands(&) in the content file directories is painful. Having a product totally useless because of DRM means a much higher rate of return on my part (I don't think of the over 9000 products I have purchased from Daz that I've ever voluntarily returned one for any reason, even if disappointed in the product--I'm the type that just finds another use for it or modify until it is usable for my purposes rather than disappoint the merchant/artist financially by returning it).
Yes, after the outcry over DRM, Daz agreed to unencrypt any DRM'd product after 12 months.
I had them in my cart; wasn't sure as I don't buy as much, but the price was tempting, then whilst I was thinking about it I saw another post. So removed them.
With DRM, free isn't a low enough price.
Yeah, I almost bought them till I saw they were encrypted. I mod my files all the time and I like to move things around. DRM only hurts the customers not the hackers who have the skills to circumvent them. Oh well, on the bright side this saves me money. These sales are killing my bank account and the more Daz DRM's the more I save. Ha ha
They are probably trying to see how many people will buy an encrypted product if the encryption is not mentioned on e g. a big new items promo page.
This is already a thread on this subject with all the same things being said. Please direct your comments there. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/89246/
