displacement maps

I tried to add some more detail to a ground plane by using a displacement map. unfortenatly that only seems to work when using realy high subdivision. That is not so when using bumpmaps and normal maps. But is impossible to achieve real depth with normal and bump maps.

Is there some trick or so that i have overlooked?

Iray is limited to actual vertices (base mesh or SubD) when applying displacement, unlike 3Delight. All I can suggest is

    1) split your mesh up so that you need the high level of SubD only on near items

    2) use the lowest level of SubD you can get away with to get a reasonable silhouette at any distance and use normals for finer detail.

For rendering with Iray...nope.  The method of displacement that Iray uses, either the base mesh needs to be much finer or the subdivision needs to be high.

Thanks. This is a bit disapointing.
