How to use GIMP to blend in shadow image for IBL when using Reality Daz Studio?
hi everyone
the downside of using IBL's and HDRI's in Reality Daz Studio is no shadow catcher so I would like to learn the following.
"The workaround is to do a separate render with a ground plane to "catch" the shadows and use "render as a statue" which is an option in Reality. This sends a scene to Luxrender where everything has a matte white material. This produces an image that can be layered in an image editor using a blend mode (I think only "multiply" will produce the desired effect).
If you fiddle with the contrast and brightness of the "statue" render layer and erase everything in it except the shadows you can get a good result. Of course, it's time consuming to have to do two renders and all the postwork, but I think it's the only way."
I have GIMP but do not understand how to layer the different images.
Could someone who knows please walk me through this or point me to a tutorial?...it would be so awesome to learn how to do this.
thanx

If you have the image, just edit > paste as new layer and then open up the layer window to control the effects and layering of each layer
Not sure on the other issues as I am not sure what you are going for. I use HDRIs all the time in reality and don't have issues with shadows and I have never used the render as a statue option.

LOL if I knew how to do that I probably wouldn't of bothered asking ....there are some vids up on U tube that may help me to figure this out.
thanx anyway
have been viewing some clips on youtube but am still at a loss of how to go about this....could ANYONE point me in the right direction here?
I have the image with the shadows layered under the main image.
what do I do now?
thanx.
ok after viewing more vids I think I'm beginning to catch on....the first step is to remove everything but the shadows on the one image ....what method of doing this is the best for this purpose?...it seems as if every vid I 've looked at uses a different tool.
Ah, I see what you are trying to do. Render another image with no backgroud. Then paste the no background image on top of the other and then select the car and go to Filters > lighting and shadows > perspective and you can then create a shadow based on the car figure shape.
I have an image rendered in "Statue" mode where I have to somehow separate the shadows form the car and then merge this with the "real" render....so do I simply cut out everything but the shadow in the front of the car or do I use something like a layer mask as is shown in this utube vid?
thanx
