Smaller lips - howto?

morkmork Posts: 278

I have that problem when looking at my character library, most of the characters have, in my oppinion, huge lips.
When looking at people, it is rather exceptional that they have huge lips, and if they do, most of them were not born with them - if you know what I mean.
I know exactly 1 woman that really has "huge" lips, which look somewhat like the ones most of my characters have. It suits her, but my point is that it is quite rare on women to have those, while is pretty much the standard on almost all DAZ characters, even Teen ones.

So, I often tried to dial down the lips, but like with the breasts, it often turns out to be very awkward - I cannot get a satisfying results, despite having quite some morphs to adjust them.

Long story made short:
Is there a good way to make lips on a (female) character smaller? How would you do it?
Wouldn't it be better to have the characters with "normal" lips plus a morph to make them look like the PA wants them to look? It's much easier to blow them up than to reduce them to what I consider a normal size.

Do you have the head morphs? I found that if you dial down the lips to 75%, (-25%) they will look good in most cases. If you dial them down too much to make them look good in the preview, they will look weird in the render.

As for the lips size in general, yes, I feel your pain. A friend of mine put it once "They look like they come out of a kissing session." wink

You could try with the Head morphs "Lips thin" http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-3-female-head-morphs

I do own the Head morphs set and another one with a good dozend of additional lip morphs. If I dial it down too much, it looks like the lips are "pressed together", so there is a line I cannot cross, otherwise it will look "pressed". I then try to fix that with the other morphs, but most of the time, in the end, it really does not look good at all. So, yes, I can downsize them a bit, but usually they are that huge initially, that it does not help a thing. :(

But, to be honest, I often try to judge the morphs by looking in the preview, not in the render - maybe I should try that, because I noticed on the expressions, that there is a huge difference between preview and actual render. (if the expression does look good at all, I figured a lot of expressions just don't work if using custom characters, which is sad)

well for one its really better to look at the render and If you wnat to avoid to rende rthe complete image you can make a spot render ( at least in 3delight, not so sure if that works in Iray). Wht I use is the Lips thin to a certain level, Lip upper / lower size and Lips Upper /lower depth. Between the combination of those three I'm rather content to get normal lips.

zev0 has a product out there that allows you to create a lot of character shapes and this also includes a lot of lip morphs

Sure - but probably the most people have at least the standard Daz3d Head and Bodymorphs ... so I tried to find a product he/she probably has ...

The 200 Plus Head and Facemorphs have a lot of lips http://www.daz3d.com/200-plus-head-face-morphs-for-genesis-3-female-s

I do have those. Well, I guess it's just that I'm not good at shaping things like lips. Will try harder. :)
About the rendering: You can do that, but it is so slow, even with spot render (do not have a nvidia card), it isn't much of a fun. But for some things you really need to do it, like lighting, expressions, ... If there only was a speedier preview renderer... :|

Rendering in iray without a Nvidia card is kind of slow (that why I stick to 3delight) But there are some ways to reduce the render time (reduce cycles, hide items not used, simple light setting) to get an option of checking more often until you like the lips.

Without images as reference as to how much is too much this all becomes rather subjective.  That said, it sounds like you've only been working with the lips and it's often a better approach to shrink the entire mouth, stretching it horizontally to the original size and then adjusting the final shape using the lip curve morphs. A lot of subtle effects can also be acheived by playing subtly with the depth of the lower face, as well as udjusting the size of the underlying mouth structure.  Finally, no matter what you do with morphs, keep in mind that the all of these figures are designed so that the density of the mesh allows for a certain amount of squeezing or stretching... but if you squeeze it down too much, the details of the lip textures are going to appear much denser and that can make the lips appear more prominent.  Just muting the lip/libstick texture and toning down the highlights/specularity can make a surprising difference in how the eye perceves the lip shape.
