Semi OT Oracle Virtual box

I know someone who works for Oracle and he recommended that I use Oracle's Virtual box.  I am currently using Ubuntu and am trying to figure out how to use Oracle's Virtual box to run DS4.9.   Does anyone have any ideas how to get it to work?

Edit: I know that I can ask the guy how but he is busy at the moment I think.

Keep in mind that your performance will suffer in a virtualized environment. Having said that, VirtualBox is a pretty decent product and compares favorably with many commercial ones. I think I still prefer VMware slightly, though. If free is the important thing, and you're comfortable in Ubuntu, you might try KVM. It's pretty easy to use on Ubuntu and will get updated with all your OS updates as they're released.

I've only actually used the OS X version myself, but from the download page, it looks like you can just grab the '.deb' package for your version of Ubuntu and open it like you normally would, like double-click it in the file browser. If you're more familiar with the terminal interface, you'd type

    dpkg -i Downloads/virtualbox-5.0_5.0.20-106931~Ubuntu~xenial_amd64.deb

or whatever is appropriate for the version of Ubuntu you have installed.

Free is my only option as my main plan is to upgrade the computer and/or the HDD.

    Greetings,

I think the idea is that you'd run a Windows installation inside VirtualBox.  Have you installed a Windows instance inside your VM?  If you do that, then install a non-Microsoft browser, then download DS 4.9 and run the installer, it should 'just work'.  Mind you the odds are against having access to hardware accellerated Iray, for instance...but it'd work to get it up and running I think.

My comment got cut off prematurely. I can provide more detail if that is insufficient.

Edit: You will have to pay for a Windows license to run inside VirtualBox

Also keep in mind that your computer shares resources with the virtual box

So if you assign the virtual box 4 gigs of ram and your pc has 16 total, 4 will be used at all times just for the virtual machine, then however much ubuntu uses, plus any other programs running. (in essence, your ubuntu machine will be cut down to 12 gigs)

Also, virtual machines cannot utilize the video card, all 3d work is done with software created to mimic 3d as best it can. I found this out trying to set up an older windows 98 virtual machine to run some older games on, but the games would not install/would not work because there was no true 3d harware accelleration)

VirtualBox's OpenGL and DS 4.8+ do not get along well.  I use it (VB5) for quick testing for startup when I don't have my test Windoze boxes around.

VB can be made to work, sorta, by having it capture the mouse instead of the integrated mouse.  When using the integrated mouse, DS gets values for mousemove it doesn't understand and the viewport spins wildly.  In mouse capture mode, the mouse mostly works, but the refresh is slow.

Still haven't fixed that?  It's been 4 or 5 yrs since I've used VB.

VB has done that for quite a while now.   And it isn't just Studio...if I remember correctly other Qt programs had similar behavior (I know Bryce had problems in VB, too).

Indeed.  It isn't a "DAZ Studio" problem per se, but since the request was specific to DS that was the context I answered.  I don't expect that Oracle is terribly interested in "fixing" the problem with the integrated mouse since the issue is "easily worked around" by capturing the mouse.  However, there are other problems with their OpenGL implementation that need fixed that just aren't happening. :(

Another problem with DS in VirtualBox is that the OpenGL viewport is ALWAYS on top of EVERYTHING and doesn't follow the UI very well.
