Are there any beer mugs or steins dripping/splashing foam suitable for lively medieval tavern scene? (wood, metal, etc., just not modern glass.)
I'm sure I've seen a few in promos, although I don't know if they were actually 3D objects or just 2D or postwork, and can't locate them offhand. Ideally with a bit of variety so it wasn't just the same identical foam drip for every patron.
And of course I could go the 2D route too, just checking out my options.

Here in obj format: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/max-beer-stein/989386
or a free one without foam:http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/free-3ds-model-beer-stein/1017013
Also, if you have a glass one, you could try replacing the surface with a pewter shader
Well, Age of Armor has great stein freebie...http://www.ageofarmour.com/3d/free/
And Sickleyield has a conversion of Spacebone's liquids that includes a couple of foam props...http://www.sharecg.com/v/68701/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/SpaceBones-Liquid-Converted-For-DS4.5
This set, which is part of the Fantasy Tavern bundle has mugs...http://www.daz3d.com/tavern-dining-hall or http://www.daz3d.com/fantasy-tavern-bundle

I managed a semi-adequate result by kitbashing Maclean's Everyday Drinks with the root beer from Slohswerk's Miranda's Ice Cream Parlor and Sickleyield's foam shaders from Ripples and Wakes Iray (and, of course, a healthy application of Mec4d's shaders, but that goes without saying). I am not completely happy with the result--as if anyone ever is--but I am unlikely to get a better one with the tools and knowledge available to me. Marshian mentioned a Coming Soon (TM) product that had something with foam and suds; maybe that will help.

I may have an answer here! The foam was sort of a side effect I discovered while working with my new product Above the Clouds for Iray: Nimbostratus

If you were doing it in Carrara there is a foaming sea water shader that I have used in a wood mug and you can tell the difference.
